Don't Look Back

Director: D.A. Pennebaker, 1967 (1hr 36m)
Bob Dylan

To celebrate the Art Gallery of Ballarat’s Medieval to Metal exhibition, the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute is screening three iconic rock films in our historic Minerva Theatre.

Clear your palette of the recent serving of slick music documentaries with quintessential films of the ‘direct cinema’ genre.

D.A. Pennebaker documents Bob Dylan’s 1965 tour of England, which opens with Dylan flipping cards with the lyrics to Subterranean Homesick Blues, considered one of the first ‘music videos’.

Pennebaker’s camera follows him from airport to hall, from hotel room to public house, from conversation to concert. Joan Baez and Donovan, among others, are on hand. It’s the period when Dylan is shifting from acoustic to electric, a transition that not all fans, including Baez, applaud.
