Ballarat Film Society – First Cow

08/11/2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

With a similar ‘feel’ to McCabe and Mrs. Miller (1971), First Cow reveals, surprisingly, an America built on racial and social diversity during the birth of American enterprise. Two travellers on the run in the 1820s dream of striking it rich, relying on a wealthy landowner’s cow which is the first cow to ever reach Oregon. Cookie and King Lu secretly milk the cow and make wonderful treats for the locals. We see what an early local economy might have looked like in America, with the use of detail – the paraphernalia of pioneer existence – being most alluring and engaging.  Kelly Reichardt is an American director known for her minimalist-style and love of small rural communities. Source: Madman.

Stars: Stars Toby Jones, Orione Lee and John Magaro.
