Established in central Ballarat in 1859, the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute’s Collection is of historical significance as the largest and most intact repository of material relating to Mechanics’ Institutes in Victoria, with its rare and valuable items demonstrating the tastes and interests of the inhabitants of a major Victorian regional centre. Staff from the Institute and State Library Victoria will showcase unique items from the Collection with stories to match.

Experience the grand Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute heritage building and collection in this special Ballarat-based Rare Book Week event.

With the largest and most intact collection of material relating to Mechanics’ Institutes in Victoria, the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute collection includes rare and valuable items from a major Victorian regional centre.

Join Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute and State Library Victoria in exploring some of the highlights from the collection.
