The Little Brass Band – Fundraiser
Looking back to the month that was, firstly I would like to say a huge thank you to The Little Brass Band for all their generosity in delivering Cheers – Raise a Glass for Brass, the recent fundraiser for the BMI held on August 10th. The Minerva Room was the perfect setting for two wonderful sets of music arranged for brass, with the bar available to purchase a drink to accompany complimentary snacks. Thanks to volunteers and Venue Manager Liam Mudge for ensuring the smooth running of the day.
This event delivered income of around $1000 with profits going towards our Library and Heritage Collection.
On the same day we were able to capture the re-creation of the 1925 chess tournament photograph between Ballarat and Geelong-photographs taken by Ellen Becker – BMI Curator. At the link below can see the original photograph complete with chess tables and the re-creation from August 10. Members of the Chess Club and BMI Patron Dr Phil Roberts gave a brief address, of the story of the 1925 tournament, although the result on the day was apparently somewhat ambiguous.
This current day tournament in 2025 was won by Geelong, with several matches being played in the Humffray Room throughout the day. Thanks to all players who made this photo opportunity possible.

We have just hosted a huge and delighted audience on August 20th, as award winning author Michael Robotham spoke in the Minerva room as part of our Author talk series. Organiser and Librarian Rosemary is always very excited to see the audiences growing for these talks, and was delighted with this almost full house.
If you haven’t read The White Crow – reserve your copy at the library, or our friends at Collins Booksellers on Lyidard will have copies available, signed by the man himself.

During National Science Week we welcomed Professor John Long who presented The Secret History of Sharks, thank you so much Professor Long and Ellen for arranging this event.
