Numa & Karl: Extraordinary Man That He Was | Written by Em Chandler

Written by Em Chandler – A staged Reading

Numa and Karl: Extraordinary Man that He Was is a biographical play about 19th-century queer activist and theorist of sexuality, Karl Heinrich Ulrichs.

In 1867 he protested at a gathering of 500 German jurists against the criminalisation of (what we now call) homosexuality. The play explores this incredible human and his passion, his relationship with his family and loved ones, and the impact his work had on community then and today.

Shortlisted for the Midusmma Festival Queer Playwriting Award of the Year 2023.

This event takes place on Wadawurrung Country. Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute acknowledges the Wadawurrung People of the Kulin Nation as the first inhabitants and Traditional Custodians of the lands where we work, learn and create. Always Was, Always Will Be, Aboriginal Land.
