Executive Manager Update – Nev Ivey
Since commencing at BMI, I have been struck by the genuine passion, knowledge, and commitment that each staff member and volunteer brings to this organization. It is this collective capability that ensures we are not only recognized for our remarkable building, but are continuing to evolve as a vibrant and relevant hub for our members and guests in 2026 and beyond.
Given that many of the staff are part-time and/or volunteers, paths do not always cross regularly. As a result, maintaining clarity around our strategic direction and day-to-day operations can at times be challenging.
Together with the Board, I have been working towards identifying priorities and progress.
Library and Building
Library:
- Ongoing campaign to promote membership
Building Priorities
- Through the Building Committee, it has been agreed that remediation of the external façade (shop/street level) will be pursued via grant funding.
- Discussions regarding installation of a lift to the basement are ongoing, noting the significant cost implications. Similarly, upgrades to the finishing kitchen remain under consideration.
- Recent works completed include:
- Ceiling and roof repairs in the Heritage Reading Room
- Gutter cleaning
- Installation of a security alarm system
Heritage Rooms Usage
Hooper Room
- Multipurpose space, currently housing local history materials (non-heritage listed)
- Potential future use as an exhibition space
- The Courier collection (unbound paper packages) to be removed
- Can also function as a small meeting space
Heritage Reading Room
- Heritage Collection volunteers have been working diligently to relocate selected items to the mezzanine level
- No food or drink permitted in this space
- Mezzanine access is allowed; however, some supervision is recommended due to the nature of the stairs
- Full access to the collection is available to members (items cannot be borrowed)
- High-value items (secured in cabinets and safe) are accessible under supervision only
Humffray Room
- Business as usual
- Continues to be our primary meeting space, promoted to both community and corporate users
Pound Room
- Ongoing clean-up
Tours
Tours
- A structured tour offering is currently being developed for schools and community groups. This will support targeted marketing and improved booking coordination.
- Recent feedback from a school group was very positive (thank you, to our Tours Coordinator, Katrina) — a great foundation to build upon.
