Celebration and Survival: Mechanics' Institutes Australia 2018

Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute (BMI) is excited to have been asked to host the 2018 Conference, which has been themed “Celebration and Survival”.

The Conference is in Ballarat over 3 days, Friday November 16th through to Sunday November 18th and will be a wonderful gathering of supporters of Mechanics’ Institutes from across Australia, and indeed internationally.

The Conference will cover subjects on history, success, maintenance, utilisation and ideas as Mechanics’ Institutes continue to develop in today’s context.

There are many opportunities for BMI members to link in with the Conference, including:

• Whole Conference Registration for the 3 days,

• Single day Registration – Friday or Saturday or Sunday,

• Attendance at the fantastic Saturday night dinner and entertainment

• Further options for bus tours and barbecues.

All options and costs are presented at the conference web site mivic.org.au/mia2018.html and there are hard copy brochures available in the Library. The MIA conference committee has constructed a marvellous program of workshops and key speakers, so we encourage you to read the program and consider your participation.

As part of our hosting commitment the BMI is also helping with some voluntary staffing for the conference, and there will be many opportunities to volunteer over the weekend.

Marilyn Furness (Volunteer Coordinator) will certainly be communicating further about this. In fact, volunteers will also be provided with complimentary attendance to keynote sessions as a thank you gesture.

A further option, as a special deal for BMI members or supporters is to purchase keynote speaker tickets for $20.00 for the 3 keynote lectures, or $10.00 for a single session. Again, this information is on the conference website.

The Board strongly encourages all our members to consider this opportunity to participate in a really interesting and relevant conference right here in our own Institute. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to follow up with either the conference organisers (details on the various publications or website) or with Tony Godfrey, Executive Manager BMI.
