Louisa Rankin Quartet / Jon Delaney Gypsy Jazz Duo

Louisa Rankin Quartet / Jon Delaney Gypsy Jazz Duo

Humffray Room, Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute

Friday 26 October 2018
Doors open 7:00pm, Performance 7.30pm

For the final performance of the jazz concert series for 2018, Small Space Music presents the Louisa Rankin Quartet and the Jon Delaney Gypsy Jazz Duo.

Bringing an instrumental perspective to collective music-making, Louisa’s approach to composing for and singing within an improvising ensemble sees her original music provide a vehicle with which to explore the unique qualities of her voice, creating a framework that inspires adventurous ensemble interaction and demands a bold approach to improvisation.

Louisa Rankin – voice/compositions

Angela Davis – alto saxophone

Jon Delaney – guitar

Jonathan Zion – double bass

Supported by Jon Delaney and Salvatore Greco, playing the music of 1930s Paris.

One half of prominent Melbourne French Gypsy jazz band La Mauvaise Réputation, Jon Delaney and Salvatore Greco play the music of 1930s Paris melodies and danceable rhythms. Drawing from the waltz repertoire of the ballrooms of Pigalle and Montmartre, and the fiery Gypsy music of Django Reinhardt and his followers, they will perform songs from Jon’s two albums in this style, and favourites from Piaf, Trenet, and accordion virtuosi Tony Murena and with its sweet melodies and Gus Viseur.
