Research Capabilities

The BMI possesses a very valuable Heritage Library collection and other archival material. In the 19th century the Institute subscribed to more than 40 magazines worldwide and a number of local and international newspapers. For example the BMI possesses a complete collection of the Ballarat Star from 1856 to 1924 and the Ballarat Courier from 1867 to 2015.

The collection includes many books about mining and early technology. Recently William Lathrop and his wife Anni donated 40 volumes of papers by Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of the United States of America.

The BMI anticipates that in the future most of the collection will be digitised.

In 2012 the BMI signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Ballarat (now Federation University) to enable students to access the BMI resources for research purposes.

Prospective researchers can contact the Librarian to receive advice on getting started on research at the BMI.
