DESCRIPTION:The Yarrowee: Uncovering the secrets of the Ballarat River\nSession 5\nFrom eel traps to bluestone\, our changing use of the Yarrowee \nBMI Twilight Talks are back! The series is hosted by Prue Bentley.\n \nPrue Bentley\nThe bluestone channel \nThe bluestone channel\, which winds its way through the city of Ballarat is a remarkable example of Victorian Blue stone construction. Built to manage the rapid rise and fall of flood waters\, which plagued the area around Bridge st\, the development of the causeway was a critical component in managing outbreaks of typhus through preventing the mixing of contaminates with drinking water in 1870s Ballarat. In the bluestones of the eastern channel. over sixty different masons’ or ‘bankers’ marks are carved into the hard bluestone of the channel. \nThis talk will give an overview of the channel and it’s history and discuss the significance of the marks on the bluestone\, which is unusual given the increasing obsolescence of the practice in England in the same period. \nDr David Waldron | Senior Lecturer in History\, Federation University\nAboriginal weirs and fish traps of Central Victoria \nIn the 19th century Associate Professor (Dr) Fred Cahir is an award-winning teacher and researcher in Aboriginal History at Federation University Australia. SUMMARY:The Yarrowee: Uncovering the secrets of the Ballarat River | Sesson 4
DESCRIPTION:The Yarrowee: Uncovering the secrets of the Ballarat River\nBMI Twilight Talks are back! The series is hosted by Prue Bentley.\n \nPrue Bentley\nSession 4\nLiquid gold down under\, and the “sludgy” history of Yarrowee Creek \nA Sludgy History of Yarrowee Creek \nBallarat’s mining heyday was not kind to Yarrowee Creek. Between 1851 and 1914 the Yarrowee was dug over\, redirected\, channelised and dredged. It became the receptacle for tonnes of liquid mining waste and was a conduit for diverting that waste to communities downstream. Susan will talk about how mining changed the Yarrowee and what was done to try to stop it. \nSusan Lawrence | Professor of Archaeology at La Trobe University\nProf. Peter Dahlhaus \nThe importance of groundwater systems of Ballarat.Groundwater is often the subject of myths and mysticism. Although it is an unseen resource\, groundwater has been critical to the cultural\, social\, environmental and economic prosperity of Ballarat. Groundwater supplies our rivers and wetlands\, mineral springs\, agricultural irrigation and urban water supplies. This talk outlines the groundwater systems of the Ballarat district and the holistic values these groundwater systems bring to our communities. \nProf. Peter Dahlhaus\, Principal Research Fellow at Centre for eResearch & Digital Information\, Federation University\nBar\nThe bar in the Humffray Room (level 4) will be open from 5pm. \nTickets | Session cost\nThe session cost is $8 per person BMI members | $12 per person general bookings. \n\nBook Now\n \nWin a double pass to this Season’s Twilight Talks\nSHARE YOUR MEMORIES OF THE YARROWEE RIVER AND WIN TWILIGHT TALKS TICKETS! \nWhat do you love about our Yarrowee River? \nWe’re collecting stories\, pictures\, and memories of life on and by the Yarrowee River for our latest series of Twilight Talks\, focussing on this important local waterway. \nPost your story or picture below\, send a message to the BMI Facebook inbox\, or complete the form below. \nEach week from 10th April we’ll give away a double pass to that week’s talk. \nSo tell us your tales\, and share your pictures! \n\nMy Yarrowee\n \nArtwork Image: Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute | Max Harris Image Collection  | Albert Hall\, 1953 | MH1615 \nAlfred Hall\, 1953 | MH1615\n\nSubscribe Newsletter\n\n\nBecome a BMI Member

DESCRIPTION:The Yarrowee: Uncovering the secrets of the Ballarat River\nBMI Twilight Talks are back! The series is hosted by Prue Bentley. \n\n Prue Bentley\nSession 3\nHow people power is protecting local waterways \nJeff Rootes \nJeff is one of the original convenors of the Friends of Canadian Corridor. In 2012 the large Canadian Forest Blue Gum plantation was going to be removed and the land handed back to the State Government for sale. The convenors saw the opportunity to imagine a different outcome and developed\, with the community\, the case for a Multi-use Forest Park. That vision and success of the Friends led to the establishment of the Woowookarung Regional Park in 2016. Since the establishment of the Park\, Jeff has been secretary of the Friends of Canadian Corridor – an organisation that is now approaching 1000 friends. Jeff lives in Canadian on a small property and is a former teacher. \n\n Jeff Rootes\, Secretary of the Friends of Canadian Corridor and the Bunanyung Landscape Aliance\nNick McKinley | Leigh Catchment Landcare Group \nCelebrating Landcare in the Yarrowee and Leigh River Catchments. DESCRIPTION: The Yarrowee: Uncovering the secrets of the Ballarat River\nBMI Twilight Talks are back! The series is hosted by Prue Bentley.\n \nPrue Bentley\nSession 2\nWhat bird or beast is that? The special wildlife of the Yarrowee and surrounds \nGardens for Wildlife Ballarat  \nGardens for Wildlife Ballarat is a free\, community-based gardening program that helps people provide more wildlife friendly spaces in urban gardens. Rob and Sam are volunteers who not only enjoy their own gardens\, but get inspired when visiting other interested gardeners seeking advice about wildlife habitat at the garden scale. They’ll share insights about how creating a garden that is wildlife-friendly can help conserve local plants and animals and create stepping stones for them to move around our neighbourhoods\, parklands and waterways. Wildlife gardening has become even more important\, since many people have spent more time at home and been able to notice what lives around their home: Connecting to nature in our gardens is not only good for wildlife\, but is also good for our health. \nDr Sam Strong | Batchelor of Applied Science (Landscape Architecture) | Volunteer with Gardens for Wildlife Ballarat\nBallarat’s bounteous birdlife \nBallarat and the surrounding region is inhabited by a remarkable diversity of birds. While bird communities have been impacted by historic disturbance and habitat loss what we see today among our birds is a wide variety of species that have proved resilient to change\, others that have taken advantage of such change and some that are only just hanging on and continue to be challenged by change. This talk will explore Ballarat’s birds in all their glory and will provide some insight into what the future might be for our birds. \nDr Grant Palmer | Senior Lecturer Environmental & Conservations Science\nBar\nThe bar in the Humffray Room (level 4) will be open from 5pm.

SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - White Riot
DESCRIPTION:In late 1970s Britain\, fascists and racists were gaining ground\, extending their influence across popular culture. \nThis film documents a vital London protest movement established in response. Rock Against Racism (RAR) was formed in 1976\, during a hostile environment of anti-immigrant hysteria and National Front marches. As neo-Nazis recruited the nation’s youth\, RAR’s multicultural punk and reggae gigs provided rallying points for resistance. \n‘An excellent documentary about a heroic grassroots political movement whose importance reveals itself more clearly in retrospect with every year that passes’. (The Guardian) \nRoadshow.\nWhite Riot\, UK\, 2019\, 81 min.\nDirector: Rubika Shah.

SUMMARY:Joe Avati | 25 Live - Have Some Respect Tour
DESCRIPTION:The comedian touted as Australia’s answer to Seinfeld is back with a brand new show for 2022 – and with most of us needing a good laugh after the events of the last two years\, his tour will be just the ticket.\nAfter surviving the world’s longest lockdown in Melbourne\, Joe is bursting with new material\, has gone slightly stir crazy\, and will take his all new Live 25 show on a national tour to celebrate his quarter century of comedy. The new show is the pinnacle of his 25-year comedy career\, aptly titled Show Some Respect: 25 Live. \nFeaturing his unique brand of humour and sharp observations\, and over the course of almost 90 minutes\, Joe will honestly recount life as an ethnic Australian (or a wog kid as he prefers to call it)\, and now life as a husband and father to a newborn. Growing up in the 70s and 80s\, Joe’s view on how today’s generation of kids compares to his own experiences will have audiences of all ages and ethnicities in stitches.

SUMMARY:Ballarat Anzacs | Display | Talks | Research
DESCRIPTION:BALLARAT ANZACS | Display \nAt the outbreak of the war in August 1914 Ballarat men were quick to enlist. While most consider the Gallipoli landing on April 25th 1915 to be Australia’s first action of the war\, Ballarat’s first casualty occurred on September 14th 1914 with the loss of the submarine AE 1 off the north coast of New Guinea. Crew member\, John ‘Jack’ Messenger\, became the first Ballarat serviceman to lose his life in what became known as the Great War. \nBallarat’s Avenue of Honour commemorates the service of 3801 men and women from the district\, 758 of whom gave their lives\, their sacrifice recognised on the National Roll of Honour at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Among these were nurses Gertrude Munro and Blodwyn Williams\, and George Merz\, the first Australian pilot to lose his life in the war. Some were killed in desperately unlucky circumstances. William Paisley was killed by a lightning strike\, Harold Dixon was struck by a train in Egypt\, Otto Davies was run over by a horse drawn wagon while sleeping and Robert Geddes fell overboard on the trip home. In addition to those on the Roll of Honour\, there were around 150 more who returned\, and died in the years after the war\, whose death was attributed primarily to their war service. \nMany Ballarat ANZACs served with great distinction. For his gallantry at Lone Pine\, Gallipoli\, William Dunstan was awarded a Victoria Cross\, the only Ballarat man to have received that award. Leslie Morshead and Albert Coates\, both from Tress Street\, Mt. Pleasant\, served in WW1 then again in WW2 with such distinction that they were both awarded knighthoods. Sister Rachel Pratt was amongst the many from the Avenue of Honour who were awarded high level gallantry and service awards. \nThe Ballarat community took great pride in the service provided by its citizens\, shown by the creation of the nationally significant Arch of Victory and Avenue of Honour. In recent years the Garden of the Grieving Mother was created to reflect the experience of so many people at home while their ANZAC sons and daughters were serving our country. \nThis display will chronical some of these stories. \nThe Display \n\nThe display will be during regular operating hours of the Library. 10am – 2pm weekdays and 9.30am – 12noon Saturdays.\nResearch | Tuesday’s & Thursday’s | 12 noon – 2pm\nTalks  | Thursdays’ at 11am\n\nArch of Victory c.1925 | Ballarat Mechanics’ Institute Max Harris Photographic Collection MH 1211\nBALLARAT ANZACS | Talks \nGarry Snowden\, President\, Arch of Victory & Avenue of Honour will facilitate a talk on each Thursday of the display: \nThursday 7 April\, 11am | BALLARAT ANZACS: Stories of Courage Sacrifice & Larrikinism | Garry Snowden \nThursday 14 April\, 11am | BALLARAT ANZACS: Mining Mud & Medals | Yvon Davis \nThursday 21 April\, 11am | BALLARAT ANZACS: The Arch of Victory & Avenue of Honour | Phil Roberts \nThursday 28 April\, 11am | BALLART ANZACS: How Ballarat Remembers it’s ANZACS | Garry Snowden \nThese sessions are free\, we would however appreciate registration of attendance\, but walkins will be welcomed\, each talk will be approximately 40 minutes. Ballarat ANZACs Talks Registration > \nBALLARAT ANZACS | Research \nGarry with the assistance of Neil Leckie from the Ballarat Ranger Military Museum and Yvon Davis will be available to assist with family research into Ballarat’s ANZACs in the Heritage Reading Room on Tuesdays & Thursdays between 12.00 and 2.00pm. \nIf you would like to take advantage of this opportunity please complete the enquiry form below: \nSpecial note: If you are expecting to take-away data from your research\, please ensure you bring a USB stick or another form of electronic information storage. \nBallarat ANZACs Research Request >  \nMining Mud & Medals \nYvon Davis will be on hand to talk about this wonderful book by the members of the Ballarat based Victorian Interpretive Projects group. SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - De Gaulle
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the 32nd Alliance Françoise French Film Festival in Melbourne\, we are screening the latest spectacularly mounted biopic on Charles de Gaulle. \nIn Paris\, 1940\, France is facing military and political collapse as World War 11 intensifies. The government panics and considers accepting defeat however on June 18th the BBC provides 4 minutes of airtime to Charles de Gaulle\, the leader in exile to address the people of France: a speech that history regards as a formative moment for the French Resistance. \nThe film focuses on just 2 months as events spiral out of control and de Gaulle’s family must set out on the roads of exodus whilst he travels to London to meet Winston Churchill. So revered was de Gaulle as a national figure in France\, when his death was announced in 1970 his successor Georges Pompidou announced: ‘General de Gaulle is dead. France is a widow’. \nPalace Films. \n\n\n\n\nFrance\, 2020\, 108 min.\nDirector: Gabriel Le Bomin.

SUMMARY:The Reading Room | February
DESCRIPTION:The Reading Room (This session will start at 1030am until the resumption of normal operating hours) \nThis volunteer run reading and discussion group meets monthly. It is anticipated that members will read the selected book prior to attendance.\nIf you would like to be a part of this group (free to BMI members) please complete the Expression of Interest. We welcome your feedback through this form as we progress this great new initiative. \n  \nExpression of Interest to participate >\n \nFor more information go to\n \n \n\n The House by the Lake | Thomas Harding\nFEBRUARY SESSION \nThe House by the Lake | Thomas Harding \nIn the summer of 1993\, Thomas Harding travelled to Berlin with his grandmother to visit a small house by a lake. It was her ‘soul place’ she said – a sanctuary she had been forced to leave when the Nazis swept to power. The trip was a chance to see the house one last time\, to remember it as it was. But the house had changed. \nTwenty years later Thomas returned to Berlin. The house now stood empty\, derelict\, and soon to be demolished. A concrete footpath cut through the garden\, marking where the Berlin Wall had stood for nearly three decades. Elsewhere were signs of what the house had once been – blue tiles showing behind wallpaper\, phographs fallen between floorboards\, flagstones covered in dirt. Evidence of five families who had made the house their home over a tumultuous century. \nThe House by the Lake is a groundbreaking work of history\, revealing the story of Germany through the inhabitants of one small wooden building: a nobleman farmer\, a prosperous Jewish family\, a renowned Nazi composer\, a widow and her children\, a Stasi informant. Moving from the late nineteenth century to the present day\, from the devastation of two world wars to the dividing and reuniting of a nation\, it is a story of domestic joy and contentment\, of terrible grief and tragedy\, and of a hatred handed down through the generations. Breathtaking in scope\, intimate in detail\, it is the long-awaited new history from the author of the bestselling Hanns and Rudolf. \nReview this title \nWhy not review this book for the benefit of our members. We will publish these reviews in our social media and website from time to time. \n \n My Book Review >\n \n\nThis event is a BMI Community Art Project – Ballarat’s Oldest Cultural Institution

SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - Heroic Losers

Set in 2001\, when Argentina was at a low point economically\, retired soccer star Fermin joins with other locals to finance a grain co-operative that falls prey to a deceptive banker. \nConsequently\, they band together to steal back the money. Revenge has never felt so satisfying – or sweetly ironic. With a cast of characters that are likable and convincing\, the film was a hit with Argentinian and worldwide audiences alike. \nWinner of the 2020 Spanish Academy Awards for Best Ibero-American Film. \nPalace Films. \nArgentina\, 2019\, 116 min.\nDirector: Sebastian Borensztein.

This is the story of the girl who stole it. \nMotherless and irrepressibly curious\, Esme spends her childhood in the Scriptorium\, a garden shed in Oxford where her father and a team of lexicographers are gathering words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. \nEsme’s place is beneath the sorting table\, unseen and unheard. One day\, she sees a slip containing the word bondmaid flutter to the floor unclaimed. Esme seizes the word and hides  it in an old wooden trunk that belongs to her friend\, Lizzie\,  a young servant in the big house. Esme begins to collect other words from the Scriptorium that are misplaced\, discarded or have been neglected by the dictionary men. They help her make sense of the world. \nOver time\, Esme realises that some words are considered more important than others\, and that words and meanings relating to women’s experiences often go unrecorded. She begins to collect words for another dictionary: The Dictionary of Lost Words. \nSet when the women’s suffrage movement was at its height and the Great War loomed\, The Dictionary of Lost Words reveals a lost narrative\,  hidden between the lines of a history written by men. It’s a delightful\, lyrical and deeply thought-provoking celebration of words\, and the power of language to shape our experience of the world… \nReview this title \nWhy not review this book for the benefit of our members.
