His academic research has focused mainly on equity and access to learning in less formal community contexts\, with an emphasis on informal learning through participation in community organisations. He has completed many national and international studies of older men’s learning and well being through community participation\, including through Men’s Sheds internationally. Barry is an honorary Patron of the Australian Men’s Shed Association\, a former President of Adult Learning Australia\, and in 2016 was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM).
