SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society | Sweet As
DESCRIPTION:July 10\n@\n7:30 pm\n–\n9:00 pm \nIndigenous Coming of Age Story\n \nFilmed in the stunning Pilbara over five weeks\, Nyul Nyul/Yawuru woman Jub Clerc’s debut feature film is the first Western Australian film by a First Nation’s director.   \n16-year-old Murra\, whose abandonment by her drug-fuelled mother puts her at risk of being sent into the Child Protection system\, instead finds herself on an outward-bound mini-bus full of at-risk teens and two charismatic team leaders. Amongst others\, the group includes a troublemaker\, a lonely and vulnerable young man\, and an irrepressible ‘Elvis\,’ the reason for whose inclusion on the trip is unknown. Sweet As is an uplifting coming-of-age road movie about unconventional friendships\, romantic crushes\, and the use of the camera to capture the beautiful and meaningful cultural landscape and quiet moments of realization. \nIn the 1980s\, Jub herself travelled on a photo safari for at-risk teens which ignited her passion for visual story-telling. Just as her journey was a transformative one for her\, so too is Sweet As transformative for its audience. Roadshow. \nAustralia\, 2022\, 83 min. \nDir: Jub Clerc. SUMMARY:Andrew Hamilton | Jokes about the time I went to Prison
DESCRIPTION:July 11\n@\n7:30 pm\n–\n9:00 pm \n$35.50 \nMinerva Space \n\nGet Tickets\n \n‘One to watch.’ NSW Police\n‘Knack for a ripping anecdote.’ ★★★★ The Age\n‘Fascinating and unique.’ Chortle (UK)\n‘A compelling and utterly hysterical night of comedy’ ★★★★★ ArtsHub\nNominee – Best Newcomer Award\, 2023 Melbourne International Comedy Festival\nIn 2021\, Andrew Hamilton spent four months in two of Sydney’s maximum-security prisons for the commercial supply of psychedelic drugs. While incarcerated\, Andrew began noticing the transportive power of laughter. After all\, if a joke can make you forget you’re in prison\, what else can it do?  \nUpon his release\, Andrew took up stand-up comedy\, initially under strict bail conditions where his parents had to come with him to shows\, and he had to be home in time for curfew. \nA year later\, Andrew performed his debut solo show\, ‘Jokes About the Time I Went to Prison’\, at the 2023 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Andrew’s show garnered him critical acclaim\, along with a nomination for Best Newcomer. \nFollowing the success of ‘Jokes About the Time I Went to Prison\,’ Andrew performed sold-out festival shows with his follow up hour\, ‘Shit Bloke’ in 2024. He embarked on his first solo headline tour later that year\, performing to packed rooms all throughout the country. The tour aligned with the release of Andrew’s autobiography\, ‘The Profound Benefits of a Stint in Prison’ (Affirm Press). \nAndrew’s viral online appearances have attracted over a billion views\, and earned him an international following\, initially as a member of the viral YouTube channel\, YeahMadTV\, and now with ‘The OG Crew’. \n \nFollow Andrew\n\n\n\n\n \nEnquiries:  Any event specific enquires should be direct to venue@ballaratmi.org.au \nPrice: $35.50 includes gst & booking fee. \n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n \nThis event takes place on Wadawurrung Country. Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute acknowledges the Wadawurrung People of the Kulin Nation as the first inhabitants and Traditional Custodians of the lands where we work\, learn and create. SUMMARY:In Conversation with Irma Gold | This event has now been CANCELLED due to low ticket sales
DESCRIPTION:July 16\n@\n6:00 pm\n–\n7:30 pm \n$11.78 \nHumffray Room \n\nGet Tickets\n \nShift \nIrma Gold \n \n‘Unforgettable’ – Nigel Featherstone. \n‘Evocative\, propulsive and heartbreaking\, Shift is a novel that can change the way you think.’ – Rochelle Siemienowicz\,\nDouble Happiness \n‘Seductive\, superbly atmospheric and beautifully narrated with a painterly\, cinemascope feel\, Shift will make your heart race.’ – Niq Mhlongo\, The City is Mine \nIn the year of the 70th anniversary of the Freedom Charter – which outlined the principles of democracy and freedom in South Africa – comes a novel set in the township where it was signed. Shift asks us to examine both the world around us…and ourselves. \nArlie is a moderately successful thirty-something photographer who can’t seem to get his shit together. He can’t hold onto a girlfriend\, or much else\, and his relationship with his parents is complicated. His agoraphobic mother\, Dellie\, has long drawn silence over her South African upbringing. The more she refuses to illuminate\, the more Arlie wants to know. \nAfter another break-up\, Arlie needs to get away\, and there’s only one place he’s drawn to. In Kliptown\, he meets choirmaster Rufaro\, singer Glory and her younger brother Samson. Amidst the poverty\, violence and beauty of this neglected South African township\, Arlie begins exploring ideas for an exhibition\, and courting the possibility of happiness. But then his father unexpectedly turns up\, and a catastrophic event changes everything. \nGusty and gripping\, tender and deeply compassionate\, Shift is a compulsively readable story about the messy process of art-making\, and the mess of love and family. It is an unflinching\, insightful and immersive novel that takes the reader inside the inner life of one township\, beyond the hyperbole of newspaper headlines\, to offer bold\, big-hearted hope. \n\n\nAbout the author\nIrma Gold is an Australian author\, editor and reader. Her debut novel\, The Breaking\, won the NSW Writers Centre Varuna Fellowship and was awarded development grants by artsACT and CAPO. It won a Canberra Critics Circle Award and was shortlisted (then Highly Commended) in the ACT Notable Awards. \nIrma’s critically acclaimed debut collection of short fiction\, Two Steps Forward (Affirm Press)\, was shortlisted for or won a number of awards. Irma’s short fiction has been widely published in journals\, including Meanjin\, Westerly\, Island\, Review of Australian Fiction and Going Down Swinging\, and in anthologies like Australian Love Stories edited by Cate Kennedy\, and the tenth anniversary edition of Award Winning Australian Writing 2017. \nIrma is also the author of five picture books for children\, most recently Where the Heart Is\, featured on Sarah Ferguson’s Storytime channel\, and Seree’s Story. \nFor 24 years Irma has worked as an editor\, and for a decade she was Convener of Editing at the University of Canberra. She is the commissioning editor of a number of anthologies\, including The Sound of Silence\, winner of the ACT Writing and Publishing Awards for Nonfiction\, and The Invisible Thread\, an official publication of the National Year of Reading 2012 and the Centenary of Canberra 2013 which anthologises a century of literature by writers who have called Canberra home\, including Alex Miller\, Marion Halligan\, Roger McDonald\, Kate Grenville\, Omar Musa\, Judith Wright and Les Murray. \nIrma spent her childhood living in a beautiful old Tudor house in south-east England just down the road from Roald Dahl\, and now lives by the beach in Naarm/Melbourne with two boys and a little black cat. \nShe is just a bit keen on travel\, elephants\, beaches\, good coffee\, jumping castles and sunshiny days. She is not at all keen on extreme heights\, spiders and zoos. She is Co-host with Karen Viggers of the writing podcast\, Secrets from the Green Room. Her name is pronounced Ear-ma. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n$11.78 per person includes booking fee & gst\, also includes light refreshment. All proceeds go to the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute to support the staging of our author events. \n\nBook on-line or contact Rosemary at the Libary via email library@ballaratmi.org.au or phone (03) 5331 3042 \n\nGet Tickets\n\n \nThis event is part of Ballarat Winter Festival \n\n \n \nThis event takes place on Wadawurrung Country. Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute acknowledges the Wadawurrung People of the Kulin Nation as the first inhabitants and Traditional Custodians of the lands where we work\, learn and create. SUMMARY:In conversation with Chloe Adams & Alli Sinclair
DESCRIPTION:August 6\n@\n6:00 pm\n–\n7:30 pm \n$11.78 \nTBA \n\nGet Tickets\n\n \nThe Occupation \nA Woman’s Voice \nChloe Adams \nAlli Sinclair \n‘Assured\, deft\, sophisticated\, Chloe Adams is the real deal’ – Emily Bitto \nA sweeping romantic adventure based on true events of the women’s liberation movement \nThe Occupation | Chloe Adams\n \nIn the autumn of 1949\, two women convene in the parlour of an upmarket Melbourne hotel. Tess is married and childless. Mary\, unwed and pregnant. Over thirty minutes\, Mary agrees to a life-altering pact: to hand over her child. \nOne year earlier\, Mary had arrived in the ruined port of Kure\, where thousands of Australians had established an occupation of the Hiroshima prefecture. Among the rubble\, she finds a surreal expat world of picnics\, parties and uneasy privilege\, while the local population struggles to rebuild. \nThere she meets Sullivan “Sully” Darling\, an Australian journalist. What begins as a weekend trip to the mountains turns into a love affair —one that forces Mary to confront her ideals about the war\, the Allies’ legacy and herself. \nBack in Australia\, the echoes of occupation linger\, as Mary fights to reclaim her place —and her child —in a society determined to possess her. \nFor fans of Colm Tóibín’s Brooklyn\, Kristin Hannah and Sarah Winman\, The Occupation is a tender\, beautifully told novel about love\, legacy and the quiet aftershocks of history. \nWhen violin virtuoso Laura Hartley’s priceless instrument is stolen\, her celebrated European career collapses — and with it\, her rare gift of seeing music in colour. Fleeingto her grandmother’s home in the Australian outback\, Laura discovers anextraordinary legacy woven through sheets of music: a powerful symphony born fromthe revolutionary hearts of suffragettes who refused to be silenced\, their voices risingabove the doomed decks of the Titanic. \nAs she traces each note of this forgotten masterpiece\, Laura uncovers a story of women who dared to fight for a world where every voice could be heard. And when scandal rocks the town of Gungderring\, she must decide: will she stay in thewings\, or step forward and fight? \nAbout the authors\nChloe Adams\nAlli Sinclair\nChloe Adams is the winner of the Penguin Literary Prize 2024. She is a journalist and fiction writer and has been published widely by Australian news mastheads and literary journals. She holds a master’s degree in Creative Writing and a Graduate Certificate of International and Community Development. \n2025 Bestselling\, multi-award-winning author Alli Sinclair uncovers little-known historical events through the eyes of women who defied society’s expectations. A global adventurer\, she transports readers on journeys of discovery across continents and eras. \nWhen not writing\, Alli runs the annual Writers at Sea retreat and crafts narratives for screen as a film and TV producer and screenwriter. \n$11.78 per person includes booking fee & gst\, also includes light refreshment. All proceeds go to the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute to support the staging of our author events. \n\nBook on-line or contact Rosemary at the Libary via email library@ballaratmi.org.au or phone (03) 5331 3042 \n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n \nThis event takes place on Wadawurrung Country.
