SUMMARY:A Talk by Dr Phil Roberts OAM | Under Minerva's Gaze | Victorian Seniors Festival
DESCRIPTION:150 years at the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute \nJoin Phil Roberts as he shares some of the fascinating details captured in Under Minerva’s Gaze. If you like a good story with a happy ending you will also be delighted by the efforts of recent Committees to raise money to restore the heritage building. \nThe BMI now shines out among the icons that testify to Ballarat’s position as a prize creation of Victorian democracy. As the editor of the Ballarat Courier wrote in 1890: \nThe gentlemen who have made their fortunes in mining or other pursuits all seemed imbued with the one spirit\, that of adding to the beauty of the Golden City…having asmassed wealth here (they) have the good old Ballarat spirit to spend some of their superfluity for the benefit of the town. If the successful men of the metropolis showed proportionate generosity and public spiritedness\, the Victorian capital would be ‘Marvellous Melbourne’ indeed. (source: Under Minerva’s Gaze – editors Jill Blee & Phil Roberts). \nMorning Tea: The talk will be followed by a light afternoon tea. Seniors Status: It will be necessary to show your seniors status on entry. (Not necessary for BMI members). \nCost | $5 Seniors & BMI members\, $10 for general admission\, plus booking fee & gst \nThis event has been designed specifically for the Seniors Festival. \n\nBookings\n\n\nFull program Seniors Festival – BMI\n\n\n \nBMI news\n\n \n\nChamber Music in Ballarat | All Beethoven Duo Recital\n\nViolinist Susan Pierotti and pianist Brian Chapman join forces to present a Duo-Recital comprising… \n\n\n \n\nFrom the Curator | The Coliseum Fire\n\nWe are featuring a photograph from our Ballarat International Foto… \n\n\n \n\nRosemary’s Book of the Week | 11 September 2023\n\nRosemary’s Book of the Week Tom Lake by Ann Patchett…. \n\n\n \n\nIn Conversation with Clare Fletcher\n\nBe sure to register for our next Library Event. SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World
DESCRIPTION:USA\, 2016\, 98 min. Directed by Werner Herzog\nDigital Revolution Documentary \nElon Musk\, Lawrence Krauss and Lucianne Walkowicz\, stars of the digital revolution\, feature in Werner Herzog’s documentary about the internet\, which he calls one of the “greatest revolutions of humanity.” Herzog asks pertinent questions\, and patiently listens\, allowing his subjects to reveal all the traits of genius\, vanity\, folly\, and bravery of their digital pioneering. In essence\, we are presented with the good\, bad and the ugly of internet culture as we visit Internet-addiction rehab centres\, hacker conventions and Elon Musk’s sleek office. As Rolling Stone reviewer David Fear writes\, Herzog’s “Existential Pondering-ometer” goes into the red and\, he advises us\, there will be robots! The film is now over six years old and we all know how fast technology changes\, so it will be interesting to view it in 2023 and maybe have a discussion afterwards.

SUMMARY:Past Truths/Bright Futures
DESCRIPTION:An evening of history and hope with local historian Dr Marguerita Stephens and local documentary film-maker James Freemantle.\nThe Years of Terror meticulously documents the struggle of the Kulin clans to hold Country as La Trobe unleashed ‘the terror of British law’ on them. \nBased on the journal of Assistant Protector William Thomas\, this work provides a new history of colonisation at Port Phillip Naarm\, bringing the focus to bear on those violently dispossessed of lands and waters\, theirs from time immemorial. \nBush to Belly is a 52 min documentary by James Freemantle\, with narration by Deborah Mailman. \nIt’s a gorgeous story. You’re going to love these kids doing great work up in the Kimberley!  Deborah Mailman \n7 Gooniyandi kids load their espresso machine in a 4-wheel drive and travel the Gibb River Road to make lattes\, cappuccinos and espressos for cyclists in some of Australia’s wildest terrain. SUMMARY:Unsettling: An insight into landscape change from Barry Golding
DESCRIPTION:Professor Barry Golding is speaking on his insights into the changing conservation and care of 6 peaks in Southern Dja Dja Wurrung Country.\nBunanyung Landscape Alliance is proud to present a FREE talk by Prof Barry Golding. \nA respect for landscape is built into our name. We recognise that landscapes change\, and that our perceptions of landscape are strongly contingent on culture. Professor Barry Golding is undertaking a State Library Victoria Fellowship in 2023. His project involves research and writing a book\, Six Peaks Speak: Unsettling changes in Southern Dja Dja Wurrung Country.\nProf Golding’s exploration of Aboriginal\, colonial and scientific responses to landscape in part of the Central Highlands will be of interest to all like-minded people. \nHis presentation is based on emerging insights from his wide-ranging research for the SLV Fellowship\, using ‘unsettling’ as an underpinning theme. SUMMARY:In Conversation with Clare Fletcher
DESCRIPTION:‘Funny\, warm\, and real…. Cements Clare Fletcher’s position as queen of the Aussie country town romance. Long may she reign!’– Hayley Scrivenor \nThe highly anticipated spin-off from Five Bush Weddings will have readers falling in love with footy\, fashion and fabulous 1960s flashbacks. \nClare Fletcher’s latest instalment from the fictional – and all too familiar – regional town of South Star\, follows town sweetheart Sarah Childs after she’s publicly dumped. \nWith her parents reluctant to put her in charge of the family property until she “proves” herself in the local community\, Sarah rekindles old friendships and throws herself in the dating deep-end – recruiting Mabel Peters (AKA The Bush Telegraph) as her match maker. \nLove Match beautifully and brilliantly combines contemporary and historical timelines\, exploring the history of deb balls\, country dances and the beauty pageants of the 1960s when Mabel shares her memories with Sarah. \nAn all-girls rugby sevens team takes centre stage in the story\, with the author admitting her own return to team sport gave her the discipline and motivation she needed to write her books. \n“I wanted to put my evangelism for amateur team sport into the story\, and I thought a sporting team would be a great vehicle for a young woman who’s not really sure who she is\, who’s going through the motions and cutting herself off from her desires\,” Fletcher said. \nUltimately\, Love Match is a romantic comedy about finding your place in a small town and figuring out who you are. \n\n Love Match | Clare Fletcher\nAbout the Author \nClare Fletcher was born and raised in St George\, Queensland\, and studied journalism and business at QUT in Brisbane. After graduating\, she moved to Sydney for an internship at the Walkley Foundation for Journalism\, and except for a couple of years spent freelancing and falling in love in New York\, she’s been there ever since. Clare lives in Sydney with her husband and daughter. \n \n \nEnquiries:  Any event specific enquires should be direct to library@ballaratmi.org.au \n$10 per person plus booking fee & gst \n \n Book Here\n \n \n Download flyer\n \n \n \nCollins Booksellers\, Ballart on Lydiard will be handling book sales for the event. \n \n Why Not become a member\n \n \n \n\nThis event is a BMI Community Cultural Project – Ballarat’s Oldest Cultural Institution \n\n\n \n \n\nUnsettling: An insight into landscape change from Barry Golding\n\nProfessor Barry Golding is speaking on his insights into the… \n\n\n \n \n\nIn Conversation with Clare Fletcher\n\nBe sure to register for our next Library Event go… \n\n\n \n \n\nNight of Burlesque\, a big teaser | Ballarat Times by Edwina Williams\n\nA TASTER of the upcoming Australian Burlesque Festival is coming… \n\n\n \n \n\nWe want your vote | Music Victoria Awards | voting closes 12 noon 13 October\n\nMinerva Ballaarat has also been nominated for Best Regional Live… \n\n \n Load More

SUMMARY:In Conversation with Tania Farrelly
DESCRIPTION:Tania is an award-winning advertising strategist who has spent over twenty-five years working in Australia’s leading advertising agencies\, telling stories for the world’s biggest brands. \nShe has more recently built her own successful\, brand consultancy iSPY. She has turned her hand from brand stories to human stories with the help of creative writing courses at RMIT and Fiona McIntosh’s Masterclass. \nWar of Hearts is a heart-stopping novel of love in a time of war. Set against the backdrop of World War One and spanning three continents\, this is a heart-stopping story of forbidden love and courage that explores the nature of faith\, the quest for redemption and the true meaning of grace. \nStaged in partnership with Collins Booksellers on Lydiard. \nWar of Hearts \nWhat began as a holiday in France in 2019\, has inspired an epic World War I tale of secrets and forbidden love. After stumbling on a story about a spy network\, know as La Dame Blance\, historical fiction writer\, Tania Farrelly spent two years poring over information about the civilian intelligentsia\, which would eventrually go on to be run by the British military. The story led the author to a war museum with an exhibit of trinkets found abandoned in the mud of the Somme. Each item was likely very precious to someone and had its own story of love and loss to tell\, I thought: “What if one of these long-lost trinkets held the clue to solving a mystery?” Farrelly said. Eventually\, her research and wonderment formed the storyline of War of Hearts. \nWar of Hearts | Tania Farrelly\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nEnquiries:  Any event specific enquires should be direct to library@ballaratmi.org.au \n$10 per person plus booking fee & gst \n\nBook Here\n\n\nDownload flyer\n\n\n \nCollins Booksellers\, Ballart on Lydiard\nwill be handling book sales for the event. \n\nWhy Not become a member\n\n\n \nThis event is a BMI Community Cultural Project – Ballarat’s Oldest Cultural Institution \n\n \n\nUnsettling: An insight into landscape change from Barry Golding\n\nProfessor Barry Golding is speaking on his insights into the… \n\n\n \n\nIn Conversation with Clare Fletcher\n\nBe sure to register for our next Library Event go… \n\n\n \n\nNight of Burlesque\, a big teaser | Ballarat Times by Edwina Williams\n\nA TASTER of the upcoming Australian Burlesque Festival is coming… \n\n\n \n\nWe want your vote | Music Victoria Awards | voting closes 12 noon 13 October\n\nMinerva Ballaarat has also been nominated for Best Regional Live… \n\n\nLoad More

SUMMARY:Meet the Author | Justin Smith
DESCRIPTION:From the acclaimed author of Cooper Not Out comes an adventurous retelling of the first Melbourne Cup. Set in 1861 Victoria\, Good as Gold is a cracking Australian-Western that reflects our colourful history — both the good and the bad.\nCritically acclaimed Cooper Not Out\, described by The Herald Sun and The Daily Telegraph as a ‘five star’ read that ‘will fill your heart’\, contains an energetic spark that is doubled in Good as Gold through its complex and loveable characters. \nGood as Gold follows an escaped orphan\, a copper and his prisoner\, and a gang of bushrangers as they descend on Melbourne town for the Cup. Each is hoping for something different — a new beginning\, a chance to make history\, or a prize bigger than they could imagine. But only one can get the gold. \nJustin Smith has a personal connection to the characters he writes\, but none more than Laurence Flynn\, named after his first Australian ancestor\, an educated man who helped immigrants of the time receive licencing to work in the local mines. Justin wrote this novel with a love for westerns\, Australian history\, and a good yarn. \nGood as Gold is a tale that will simultaneously transport readers to the past\, while commenting on the racism that still exists in our present. It reminds us that putting your faith into the wrong people can often lead to  trouble. \n \nJustin Smith is a Melbourne writer\, journalist and broadcaster. He’s a columnist with the Melbourne Herald Sun and a weekly guest on Channel Seven’s Sunrise program and Sky News. \nJustin has had a long career in radio as a presenter and executive producer. He has hosted national programs\, he was embedded with Australian troops in Afghanistan\, and was the Drive host on Sydney’s 2UE. He’s won multiple awards for journalism and broadcasting. \nGavin McGrath \nJustin will be in-conversation with ABC Ballarat Journalist Gavin McGrath. \nAfter more than a decade and a half working the beat as a newspaper reporter\, Gavin McGrath brings an eye (and an ear) for what’s newsworthy\, interesting and just plain unusual in regional Australia to ABC Local Radio. \nGrowing up in regional South Australia and Victoria\, Gavin was a relative latecomer to news journalism (he actually wanted to be a fighter pilot) but studied communications at Deakin University in Warrnambool and has since worked for the Herald Sun (five years) and The Courier in Ballarat (eight years). Prior to becoming a staff reporter\, he worked within the motoring industry and as a motorsport scribe at racetracks around Australia. \nGavin McGrath\nIn his time as a writer Gavin has taken a keen interest in local sport\, rural and farming matters\, and even returned to his first love\, driving and reviewing cars\, but hasn’t been afraid to tackle everything from politics to theatre (including a failed attempt to become Ballarat’s Phantom of the Opera. Sadly he is a terrible singer). \nThere has also been a late run at attracting the attention of AFL football recruiters\, playing bush footy as a 40-something despite an absence of any kind of sporting ability and playing virtually no football between the ages of 15 and 39. He has even spun up some discs as a pub DJ so beware of hearing the odd pub rock tune or cheesy disco classic. \nGavin takes a look at local life in Ballarat and South West Victoria each weekday between 10 and 11am\, and would love to hear your stories. \nEnquiries:  Any event specific enquires should be direct to library@ballaratmi.org.au \n$10 per person plus booking fee & gst \n\nBook Here\n\n\nDownload flyer\n\n\n \nCollins Booksellers\, Ballart on Lydiard\nwill be handling book sales for the event. \n\nWhy Not become a member\n\n\n \nThis event is a BMI Community Cultural Project – Ballarat’s Oldest Cultural Institution \n\n \n\nChamber Music in Ballarat | All Beethoven Duo Recital\n\nViolinist Susan Pierotti and pianist Brian Chapman join forces to present a Duo-Recital comprising… \n\n\n \n\nFrom the Curator | The Coliseum Fire\n\nWe are featuring a photograph from our Ballarat International Foto… \n\n\n \n\nRosemary’s Book of the Week | 11 September 2023\n\nRosemary’s Book of the Week Tom Lake by Ann Patchett…. \n\n\n \n\nIn Conversation with Clare Fletcher\n\nBe sure to register for our next Library Event. DESCRIPTION:Violinist Susan Pierotti and pianist Brian Chapman join forces to present a Duo-Recital comprising a rich and varied selection of works by Ludwig van Beethoven. \nThe concert opens with a perennial favourite – the engagingly melodious “Spring” Sonata in F\, Op.24\, followed by the composer’s final Violin Sonata – the serenely pastoral G major Sonata Op.96. \nAfter a short Interval the second half of the program will commence with the beautifully conceived Andante favori for solo piano\, WoO.57\, rarely heard these days in concert but often played by the composer as a favourite salon piece and famously used as such in the hands of Georgiana Darcy in the BBC TV adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The concert concludes with Beethoven’s most dramatic and heaven-storming Violin Sonta – the fiery and impassioned Sonata in C minor\, Op.30\, No.2. SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - Ema
DESCRIPTION:Chile\, 2019\, 107 min. Directed by Pablo Larraín\nChilean Musical Drama \nIn his first film since the 2016 double bill of Neruda and Jackie\, Pablo Larraín returns to present-day Chile for an incendiary portrait of a young woman in rebellion. Set in Valparaíso\, the film concerns married couple Ema\, a platinum-blonde reggaeton dancer (played brilliantly by Mariana Di Girolamo)\, and choreographer Gastón (Gael García Bernal)\, who have abandoned their adopted 7-year-old son. A portrait of a modern family and a tenacious exploration of art\, desire\, and personal liberation\, Ema is a rare character study that moves with the intensity of a heart-pounding dance film\, set to an absorbing electronic score by Nicolas Jaar.

SUMMARY:Sweeney Preston & Ethan Cavanagh: Presentation is Everything | SPECIAL TAPING
DESCRIPTION:After sell-out seasons across Australia and New Zealand\, Sweeney Preston and Ethan Cavanagh are coming to Ballarat for one night only to wrap up a 15-month tour with this special live taping of their award-winning show.\nPresentation is Everything is an hour of fast-paced stand-up comedy that is visually complemented through the medium of Microsoft PowerPoint. \nWritten and performed by two of Melbourne’s fastest-rising and extravagantly overdressed comedians\, this show is packed with slides full of images\, news cut-outs\, maps\, animations and (you guessed it) graphs to punctuate their quick-witted stand-up. \nArmed with outfits they can’t afford and a .ppt file they can’t attach to an email\, this is a show where presentation truly is everything. \n\nWhat the critics are saying: \n‘A fast-paced\, high-energy\, knee-slapping good time. It can’t be missed. ★★★★★’ Milk Bar Mag \n‘A delightful hour. Impeccable comedic timing and effective multimedia usage bolsters this artfully crafted script. ★★★★1/2’ Beat Magazine \n‘Rapid-fire audience-slaying\, comic delivery … with enough energy to power an army of Wiggles. ★★★★’ Weekend Notes \n‘Wholesome\, funny and bordering on family friendly. ★★★★’ Fourth Wall Media \n‘A remarkable rate of gags per minute: a quick-talking\, slide-clicking showcase of office application as comedy inspiration. Sheer charisma.’ Stuff (New Zealand) \n‘Something worth getting very\, very excited about. Choo choo.’ Theatreview (New Zealand) \n\nSupport act: Noah Szto \nDoors open from 7.30pm \n\nThis performance will be filmed. \nImages by Nick Robertson
