SUMMARY:Meet the Author | Justin Smith
DESCRIPTION:From the acclaimed author of Cooper Not Out comes an adventurous retelling of the first Melbourne Cup. Set in 1861 Victoria\, Good as Gold is a cracking Australian-Western that reflects our colourful history — both the good and the bad.\nCritically acclaimed Cooper Not Out\, described by The Herald Sun and The Daily Telegraph as a ‘five star’ read that ‘will fill your heart’\, contains an energetic spark that is doubled in Good as Gold through its complex and loveable characters. \nGood as Gold follows an escaped orphan\, a copper and his prisoner\, and a gang of bushrangers as they descend on Melbourne town for the Cup. Each is hoping for something different — a new beginning\, a chance to make history\, or a prize bigger than they could imagine. But only one can get the gold. \nJustin Smith has a personal connection to the characters he writes\, but none more than Laurence Flynn\, named after his first Australian ancestor\, an educated man who helped immigrants of the time receive licencing to work in the local mines. Justin wrote this novel with a love for westerns\, Australian history\, and a good yarn. \nGood as Gold is a tale that will simultaneously transport readers to the past\, while commenting on the racism that still exists in our present. It reminds us that putting your faith into the wrong people can often lead to  trouble. \n \nJustin Smith is a Melbourne writer\, journalist and broadcaster. He’s a columnist with the Melbourne Herald Sun and a weekly guest on Channel Seven’s Sunrise program and Sky News. \nJustin has had a long career in radio as a presenter and executive producer. He has hosted national programs\, he was embedded with Australian troops in Afghanistan\, and was the Drive host on Sydney’s 2UE. He’s won multiple awards for journalism and broadcasting. \nGavin McGrath \nJustin will be in-conversation with ABC Ballarat Journalist Gavin McGrath. \nAfter more than a decade and a half working the beat as a newspaper reporter\, Gavin McGrath brings an eye (and an ear) for what’s newsworthy\, interesting and just plain unusual in regional Australia to ABC Local Radio. \nGrowing up in regional South Australia and Victoria\, Gavin was a relative latecomer to news journalism (he actually wanted to be a fighter pilot) but studied communications at Deakin University in Warrnambool and has since worked for the Herald Sun (five years) and The Courier in Ballarat (eight years). Prior to becoming a staff reporter\, he worked within the motoring industry and as a motorsport scribe at racetracks around Australia. \nGavin McGrath\nIn his time as a writer Gavin has taken a keen interest in local sport\, rural and farming matters\, and even returned to his first love\, driving and reviewing cars\, but hasn’t been afraid to tackle everything from politics to theatre (including a failed attempt to become Ballarat’s Phantom of the Opera. Sadly he is a terrible singer). \nThere has also been a late run at attracting the attention of AFL football recruiters\, playing bush footy as a 40-something despite an absence of any kind of sporting ability and playing virtually no football between the ages of 15 and 39. He has even spun up some discs as a pub DJ so beware of hearing the odd pub rock tune or cheesy disco classic. \nGavin takes a look at local life in Ballarat and South West Victoria each weekday between 10 and 11am\, and would love to hear your stories. \nEnquiries:  Any event specific enquires should be direct to library@ballaratmi.org.au \n$10 per person plus booking fee & gst \n\nBook Here\n\n\nDownload flyer\n\n\n \nCollins Booksellers\, Ballart on Lydiard\nwill be handling book sales for the event. \n\nWhy Not become a member\n\n\n \nThis event is a BMI Community Cultural Project – Ballarat’s Oldest Cultural Institution \n\n \n\nChamber Music in Ballarat | All Beethoven Duo Recital\n\nViolinist Susan Pierotti and pianist Brian Chapman join forces to present a Duo-Recital comprising… \n\n\n \n\nFrom the Curator | The Coliseum Fire\n\nWe are featuring a photograph from our Ballarat International Foto… \n\n\n \n\nRosemary’s Book of the Week | 11 September 2023\n\nRosemary’s Book of the Week Tom Lake by Ann Patchett…. \n\n\n \n\nIn Conversation with Clare Fletcher\n\nBe sure to register for our next Library Event. SUMMARY:Chamber Music in Ballarat | All Beethoven Duo Recital
DESCRIPTION:Violinist Susan Pierotti and pianist Brian Chapman join forces to present a Duo-Recital comprising a rich and varied selection of works by Ludwig van Beethoven. \nThe concert opens with a perennial favourite – the engagingly melodious “Spring” Sonata in F\, Op.24\, followed by the composer’s final Violin Sonata – the serenely pastoral G major Sonata Op.96. \nAfter a short Interval the second half of the program will commence with the beautifully conceived Andante favori for solo piano\, WoO.57\, rarely heard these days in concert but often played by the composer as a favourite salon piece and famously used as such in the hands of Georgiana Darcy in the BBC TV adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The concert concludes with Beethoven’s most dramatic and heaven-storming Violin Sonta – the fiery and impassioned Sonata in C minor\, Op.30\, No.2. This is a feast of Beethoven chamber music not to be missed! \nProgram \nViolin Sonata No. 5 in F\, Op. 24 (Spring) \nViolin Sonata No. 10 in G\, Op. 96 \nInterval \nAndate favouri for solo piano\, Wo0. 57 \nViolin Sonato No. 7 in C minor\, Op. 30 No. 2 \nProgram and notes (PDF 397KB) \n\nNotes\n \nTickets \nAdult/Senior $35 | Concession $30 | Student $15 \n\nBookings\n \n \n\nOur Library | New Releases & Recommendations August 2023\n\nGo to the Library webpage to view all New Releases… \nRead More \n\n \n\nNewsletter – August 2023\n\nIn this issue learn about: Rosemary’s Library New Releases and… \nRead More \n\n \n\nRex’s Snippits | UNESCO 2010 Honourable Mention\n\nDid you know that in 2010 the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute… \nRead More \n\n \n\nDaniel Connell | I’m Always Sore\n\nDaniel Connell (As seen on the MICF Gala and Comedy… \nRead More \n\n\nLoad More

SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - Ema
DESCRIPTION:Chile\, 2019\, 107 min. Directed by Pablo Larraín\nChilean Musical Drama \nIn his first film since the 2016 double bill of Neruda and Jackie\, Pablo Larraín returns to present-day Chile for an incendiary portrait of a young woman in rebellion. Set in Valparaíso\, the film concerns married couple Ema\, a platinum-blonde reggaeton dancer (played brilliantly by Mariana Di Girolamo)\, and choreographer Gastón (Gael García Bernal)\, who have abandoned their adopted 7-year-old son. A portrait of a modern family and a tenacious exploration of art\, desire\, and personal liberation\, Ema is a rare character study that moves with the intensity of a heart-pounding dance film\, set to an absorbing electronic score by Nicolas Jaar.

SUMMARY:Sweeney Preston & Ethan Cavanagh: Presentation is Everything | SPECIAL TAPING

SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - While at War (Mientras dure la guerra)
DESCRIPTION:Spain/Argentina\, 2019\, 107 min. Directed by Alejandro Amenabar\nSpanish Civil War Film \nHistorical dramas have been very popular at Ballarat Film Society\, so this year we are screening an intriguing Spanish political and military film set in 1936\, during the first few months of the Spanish Civil War. The film recreates\, in a surprisingly measured way\, the conflict lived through by Spanish philosopher and writer Miguel de Unamuno in his university town of Salamanca.  His initial support for the new Franco regime is moderate; however\, in a legendary speech at the university\, he issued a warning that cast him into public humiliation and chaos. Franco’s rise to power casts a long shadow over Spain\, long after his death in 1975\, and this film presents an ambitious Franco capitalising on the loss of Spanish national pride to promote himself and his allies.  This is an exquisitely detailed period piece that shows a snapshot of Spain at a complicated time.

SUMMARY:Fanny Lumsden: Hey Dawn Tour - Ballarat
DESCRIPTION:Join ARIA and eight-time Golden Guitar award winning singer-songwriter Fanny Lumsden and her incredible band\, The Prawn Stars\, as they hit the road celebrating her fourth studio album ‘Hey Dawn’. \nFanny’s third album ‘Fallow’\, released in March 2020\, was considered a ‘breakthrough’\, winning the ARIA\, CMAA Golden Guitar and AIR awards for Country Album of the Year\, as well as four additional Golden Guitars. It was shortlisted for the prestigious Australian Music Prize\, debuted in the top 10 ARIA charts and got many people through lockdown. Needless to say\, following that\, a fourth album was always going to be daunting. \nSo Fanny went into this album with one thing in mind – she wanted it to feel good. SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - Lake of Scars
DESCRIPTION:Australia\, 2022\, 95 min. Directed by Bill Code\nIndigenous Australian Documentary \nThis film by former Guardian and Al Jazeera journalist Bill Code takes us to a corner of Victoria which is a place of great beauty\, environmental significance\, and rare archaeological wonder. As the clock ticks\, an unlikely partnership forms that could see positive cultural heritage conservation with the creation of a Keeping Place at Boort.  A key participant in the film is Yung Balug man Jida Gulpilil (son of actor David Gulpilil) who returns to his mother’s country and seeks to safeguard Dja Dja Wurrung cultural heritage. Seven years in the making\, it is presented and co-written by the late Uncle Jack Charles\, who interprets the story of custodianship matters concerning local scarred trees\, middens and the beautiful wetlands.  Showing how reconciliation can be both urgent and complex\, this documentary was crowd-funded by Documentary Australia\, and supported by The Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council and the Dja Dja Wurrung Corporation. \nNote: This film (and trailer) contains voices and images of people who have died.

SUMMARY:Meet the Author | A. J. Lyndon
DESCRIPTION:A. J. Lyndon\nI have a long standing interest in history\, particularly the English Civil Wars of the 17th century. In 2014 I started writing a novel about the “War Without an enemy” as it was described by an army commander in 1643. The Welsh Linnet was published in 2017. The sequel\, The Tawny Sash\, will be published on 30 May 2023. \nMy short stories have been published in a number of literary journals and anthologies. \nDespite being Australian I keep in regular contact with historical experts in the UK who patiently answer questions on every aspect of 17th century life on and off the battlefield. I am married with two children and a very spoiled dog. \nReviews of my debut novel The Welsh Linnet \n“stirring\, accurate accounts of the battles at Edgehill and Roundway Down.” \nHISTORICAL NOVEL SOCIETY \n“Captures the essence of the time. The story sweeps you along.” \nMICHAEL ARNOLD\, AUTHOR OF THE STRYKER CHRONICLES \n\n\nMore about the author\n \nThe Tawny Sash \nBook 2 in the War Without An Enemy series. Historical novel set in England 1644 during the English Civil War between King Charles I and the English Parliament. Sequel to ‘The Welsh Linnet‘. \nWelsh gentleman Gabriel Vaughan and his brother-in-law Will Lucie are on the run from the vengeful Sir Henry Lucie and the threat of a court martial. The two cavalry captains must clear their names before Sir Henry’s hired spy can find them. \nBut then Gabriel\, a follower of the outlawed Catholic faith\, becomes embroiled in religious infighting at King Charles I’s most important fortress\, Basing House and when a plot to betray the garrison is hatched\, Gabriel is implicated. \nCost $10 per person includes gst & light refreshments \n\nBook Here\n\n\nDownload Flyer\n\n\nWhy Not become a member\n\n\n \nThis event is a BMI Community Cultural Project – Ballarat’s Oldest Cultural Institution \n \n\nRosemary’s Book of the Week | 1 May 2023\n\nOutback by Patricia Wolf Rosemary’s Book of the Week Ds… \n\n \n\nMarion Snowdon | Twilight Talks | Military History: How do we remember?\n\nWednesday 10 May @ 5.30pm Learn from a curious observer… \n\n \n\nTwilight Talks | Join us this Wednesday\n\nJoin us this Wednesday for Twilight Talks | Music and… \n\n \n\nNewsletter – May 2023\n\nIn this issue learn about: Library New Releases & Recommended… \n\n\nLoad More

She dreams of opening a bed and breakfast at Lacewing Estate\, but soon discovers the crumbling historic building and her father’s reluctance to join the food tourism revolution are just the beginning of her uphillbattle. \nEnglish winemaker Connor Jamison has travelled to South Australia’s iconic wine region to learn from the experts and carve a name for himself in the industry. However\, it quickly becomes clear that no matter how many miles Connor puts between himself and the accident that flipped his world\, the past keeps nipping at his heels. \nCan April’s fresh ideas save Lacewing Estate from folding or will they be a fool’s folly? And will Connor’s fierce loyalty come back to haunt him? \nUnited by cooking classes\, music and an unexpected involvement in the Penwarra Country Show\, April and Connor seem like the perfect match\, but with old flames\, new challenges and careers conspiring to keep them apart\, can this pair forge their own path together? \nPraise for Maya Linnell \nMaya’s novels have consistently made: \n\nThe Better Reading Top 100 competition –\nTop 10 Australian Fiction Bestseller in June 2019\, 2020\, 2021 & 2022\nFifth highest-selling Australian romance author in 2022\n\n‘When a new Maya Linnell novel lands in the office\, we pretty much draw the curtains and shut upshop until it’s reads’ Australian Country Magazine \n‘I’ve always wanted to live in the country so Maya’s books are always my perfect escape’ JoannaNell\, bestselling author \n‘Full of warmth\, humour and genuine heart\, just like eating scones fresh from the oven’ ABC WideBay \n‘Tugs on the heartstrings’ New Idea Magazine \n‘Linnell brings a good deal of authenticity and humour to her story … an enjoyable tale aboutromance\, family and dealing with change.’ Canberra Weekly Magazine \nFree: Bookings essential \n \n Book Here\n \n \n Download flyer\n \nThis event is being staged in partnership with Ballarat Libraries \n \n \n \n \nCollins Booksellers\, Ballart on Lydiard will be handling book sales for the event. \n \n Download Flyer\n \n \n Why Not become a member\n \n \n \n\nThis event is a BMI Community Cultural Project – Ballarat’s Oldest Cultural Institution \n\n\n \n \n\nRosemary’s Book of the Week | 8 May 2023\n\nMotherland by Stephanie Trethewey Rosemary’s Book of the Week Behind… \n\n\n \n \n\nBMI Special Programs\, Ballart Heritage Festival | The Ballarat Courier Collection\n\nBallarat Heritage Festival at the BMI | The Ballarat Courier… \n\n\n \n \n\nRepetiteur Stacey Yang will support her Melba Opera Trust colleagues on 4 June at the BMI\n\nA repetiteur is one of the driving forces behind the… \n\n\n \n \n\nBMI Special Programs\, Ballart Heritage Festival | The Heritage Collection\n\nWhy not check out the special programs that we will… \n\n \n Load More
