SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - While at War (Mientras dure la guerra)
DESCRIPTION:Spain/Argentina\, 2019\, 107 min. Directed by Alejandro Amenabar\nSpanish Civil War Film \nHistorical dramas have been very popular at Ballarat Film Society\, so this year we are screening an intriguing Spanish political and military film set in 1936\, during the first few months of the Spanish Civil War. The film recreates\, in a surprisingly measured way\, the conflict lived through by Spanish philosopher and writer Miguel de Unamuno in his university town of Salamanca.  His initial support for the new Franco regime is moderate; however\, in a legendary speech at the university\, he issued a warning that cast him into public humiliation and chaos. Franco’s rise to power casts a long shadow over Spain\, long after his death in 1975\, and this film presents an ambitious Franco capitalising on the loss of Spanish national pride to promote himself and his allies.  This is an exquisitely detailed period piece that shows a snapshot of Spain at a complicated time.

SUMMARY:Fanny Lumsden: Hey Dawn Tour - Ballarat
DESCRIPTION:Join ARIA and eight-time Golden Guitar award winning singer-songwriter Fanny Lumsden and her incredible band\, The Prawn Stars\, as they hit the road celebrating her fourth studio album ‘Hey Dawn’. \nFanny’s third album ‘Fallow’\, released in March 2020\, was considered a ‘breakthrough’\, winning the ARIA\, CMAA Golden Guitar and AIR awards for Country Album of the Year\, as well as four additional Golden Guitars. It was shortlisted for the prestigious Australian Music Prize\, debuted in the top 10 ARIA charts and got many people through lockdown. Needless to say\, following that\, a fourth album was always going to be daunting. \nSo Fanny went into this album with one thing in mind – she wanted it to feel good. That’s all and as Rod Yates said\, “Hey Dawn does feel good. It’s a rich character study\, with the singer-songwriter reflecting on the stories that have shaped her and those around her… in short\, Lumsden’s most complete offering to date.” \nFanny Lumsden’s shows are one of a kind. An all-in affair\, where joy and exuberance meet intimate storytelling\, delivered with wit\, warmth and luscious harmonies. Alongside her band\, The Prawn Stars\, Fanny has “established herself as one of the genre’s most esteemed performers” (The Australian)\, honing her craft over 10 years and hundreds of halls across Australia on their annual ‘Country Halls Tour’. \n \nEnquiries: This is an externally produced event. SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - Lake of Scars
DESCRIPTION:Australia\, 2022\, 95 min. Directed by Bill Code\nIndigenous Australian Documentary \nThis film by former Guardian and Al Jazeera journalist Bill Code takes us to a corner of Victoria which is a place of great beauty\, environmental significance\, and rare archaeological wonder. As the clock ticks\, an unlikely partnership forms that could see positive cultural heritage conservation with the creation of a Keeping Place at Boort.  A key participant in the film is Yung Balug man Jida Gulpilil (son of actor David Gulpilil) who returns to his mother’s country and seeks to safeguard Dja Dja Wurrung cultural heritage. Seven years in the making\, it is presented and co-written by the late Uncle Jack Charles\, who interprets the story of custodianship matters concerning local scarred trees\, middens and the beautiful wetlands.  Showing how reconciliation can be both urgent and complex\, this documentary was crowd-funded by Documentary Australia\, and supported by The Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council and the Dja Dja Wurrung Corporation. \nNote: This film (and trailer) contains voices and images of people who have died.

In 2014 I started writing a novel about the “War Without an enemy” as it was described by an army commander in 1643. The Welsh Linnet was published in 2017. The sequel\, The Tawny Sash\, will be published on 30 May 2023. \nMy short stories have been published in a number of literary journals and anthologies. \nDespite being Australian I keep in regular contact with historical experts in the UK who patiently answer questions on every aspect of 17th century life on and off the battlefield. I am married with two children and a very spoiled dog. \nReviews of my debut novel The Welsh Linnet \n“stirring\, accurate accounts of the battles at Edgehill and Roundway Down.” \nHISTORICAL NOVEL SOCIETY \n“Captures the essence of the time. The story sweeps you along.” \nMICHAEL ARNOLD\, AUTHOR OF THE STRYKER CHRONICLES \n\n\nMore about the author\n \nThe Tawny Sash \nBook 2 in the War Without An Enemy series. Historical novel set in England 1644 during the English Civil War between King Charles I and the English Parliament. Sequel to ‘The Welsh Linnet‘. \nWelsh gentleman Gabriel Vaughan and his brother-in-law Will Lucie are on the run from the vengeful Sir Henry Lucie and the threat of a court martial. The two cavalry captains must clear their names before Sir Henry’s hired spy can find them. \nBut then Gabriel\, a follower of the outlawed Catholic faith\, becomes embroiled in religious infighting at King Charles I’s most important fortress\, Basing House and when a plot to betray the garrison is hatched\, Gabriel is implicated. \nCost $10 per person includes gst & light refreshments \n\nBook Here\n\n\nDownload Flyer\n\n\nWhy Not become a member\n\n\n \nThis event is a BMI Community Cultural Project – Ballarat’s Oldest Cultural Institution \n \n\nRosemary’s Book of the Week | 1 May 2023\n\nOutback by Patricia Wolf Rosemary’s Book of the Week Ds… \n\n \n\nMarion Snowdon | Twilight Talks | Military History: How do we remember?\n\nWednesday 10 May @ 5.30pm Learn from a curious observer… \n\n \n\nTwilight Talks | Join us this Wednesday\n\nJoin us this Wednesday for Twilight Talks | Music and… \n\n \n\nNewsletter – May 2023\n\nIn this issue learn about: Library New Releases & Recommended… \n\n\nLoad More

SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - Pig
DESCRIPTION:USA\, 2021\, 92 min.  Directed by Michael Sarnoski\nIndi Revenge Drama \nThe centre of this film is a subtle and nuanced performance from Nicolas Cage\, playing a truffle hunter living alone in the Oregonian wilderness with his foraging pig\, who must confront his past when he goes to the city in search of his pig after she has been stolen. This film up-ends expectations of both Cage and the revenge movie genre\, and is all the more powerful for it. “At a time when so many people are struggling to find something of value in their lives\, when people are fleeing jobs\, cities\, futures they thought they wanted\, Cage has crafted a quiet soliloquy about grasping onto something that has meaning.” Austin Chronicle. Shot around Portland\, Oregon\, the film’s setting is reminiscent of a very well-received film we screened a few years ago: Leave no Trace\, directed by Deborah Granik.

SUMMARY:Living Heritage Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The BMI has recently worked with Grimwade Conservation Services to perform urgently required conservation work on a number of significant items from the Heritage Victoria registered collection. This work was carried out as part of a  Victorian Government Living Heritage Grant awarded in 2021\, with work completed in December 2022. \nThese items include original volumes of Australian plant specimen books compiled by Baron Ferdinand von Mueller\, and associated books written by von Mueller\, an original artwork known to have belonged to the BMI from the early days of the Institute and various other valuable books needing cleaning and restoration work. \nThe primary exhibition will showcase these remarkable items within the Heritage listed building that is the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute. \nThe proposed accompanying events will include creative programming to showcase this work\, the wider BMI collection and the historic building and introduce or re-introduce the wider public to “their” Institute. Invitations will be extended to other special interest organisations to bring their members to learn why Ballarat was considered an important centre for learning and knowledge sharing\, even in the 19th century. \nCost/Entry Fee: Free to BMI members | $5 for non-members \n\nBook here\n \nView the full list of Ballarat Heritage Festival Events at the BMI \n\nBallarat Heritage Festival | BMI\n\n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n\nRosemary’s Book of the Week | 3 April 2023\n\nApartment 303 by Kelli Hawkins Rosemary’s Book of the Week… \n\n\n \n\nNewsletter – April 2023\n\nIn this issue learn about: Library New Releases & Recommended… \n\n\n \n\nOur Library | New Releases & Recommendations April 2023\n\nCGo to the Library webpage to view all New Releases… \n\n\n \n\nMeet the Author\, enjoy the Show | Bill ‘Swampy’ Marsh | 3 April 2023\n\nFeedback from recent Shows: Shaun Keenan – Griffith – Very… \n\n\nLoad More
