SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - Brooklyn
DESCRIPTION:Ireland/UK/Canada\, 2015\, 112 min. Directed by John Crowley\nNostalgic Irish Émigré Romance\n\nReceiving a standing ovation at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and faithfully adapted from the novel by Colm Toibin\, Brooklyn tells the story of Eilis (Saoirse Ronan)\, a young woman from Enniscorthy\, County Wexford who finds herself in the new world of New York. Although big city excitement\, Italian charm and delicious food stir her love of life\, weddings and funerals call her back to Ireland where another phase of her life begins. Set in the 1950s\, Brooklyn harks back in style to the “women’s pictures” of the mid-20th century that were the backbone of popular cinema\, when stars like Bette Davis\, Joan Crawford and Barbara Stanwyck ruled the screen. It is largely a film about being torn between time\, place and identity: in America Eilis is a woman with a future\, yet in both worlds\, she is filled with longing and a sense of displacement. Also starring the fabulous Julie Walters\, Jim Broadbent\, Domhnall Gleeson and Fiona Glascott you will be won over by its low-key charm. \nThis film is presented in association with the Ballarat Irish Association.

SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - La Strada
DESCRIPTION:Italy\, 1954\, b/w\, 94 min.  Directed by Federico Fellini\nFellini Classic Neo-Realism \nStarring Giulietta Masina\, Anthony Quinn and Richard Basehart\, and produced by Dino De Laurentiis and Carlo Ponti\, La Strada was Fellini’s 4th film and ensured his international reputation. Told in a fabulist style with a focus on love and jealousies\, it is set in a circus featuring the brutish strongman Zampano (Quinn) and the plucky Gelsomina (Masina): brutish and innocent characters\, both with intense emotions and desires. Throughout his film-making career\, Fellini was fascinated by the tensions between a character’s theatrical façade and messy interior life. The film was controversial; however it has become one of the most influential films ever made. Confront Fellini’s 1950s sensibility\, the tragedy of circus life and the enthralling music of Nino Rata. La Strada won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film in 1957.

SUMMARY:Choose Happiness | A Public Talk\, Buddhist Monk\, Gen Kelsang Dornying
DESCRIPTION:It’s not uncommon to feel we are wandering aimlessly through life. Searching for\, but never truly finding\, the contentment and happiness we seek. What have you daydreamed about and wished for in your life? For some it’s a large house\, well paid job or fast car. For others it’s reputation\, good looks\, power\, excitement or adventure. Many seek meaning and happiness in relationships. All these things can make us superficially happy for a short while\, but they can never give us the pure and everlasting happiness that all of us\, in our heart of hearts\, long for. Happiness is a state of mind\, so it’s cause must also be within the mind. The real cause of\nhappiness is inner peace. \nJoin Buddhist monk Gen Kelsang Dornying for a one-night-only public talk on true happiness. Gen Dornying will explain the art of meditation\, and how to enjoy great quality of life – whatever happens! \nKadampa Meditation Centre Australia | Ballarat Branch\n0455205589 | info@kadampa.org.au\nKMC Australia is a not-for-profit organisation\nABN 86 114 195 550 \nThe teacher of this public talk is Gen Kelsang Dornying\, the Resident Teacher of Kadampa Meditation Centre Australia and Kadampa Meditation Centre Melbourne. \nGen Dornying has been teaching Kadampa Buddhism for 20 years and teaches with a warmth and humilty that is naturally inspiring. \n \nCost: $25 for non-members | $10 for members. \nBookings: meditateinmelbourne.org/pages/special-events \nFollow Kadampa

She dreamed of being in a community free of conflict – and of translating all of the flavours of her Nuer heritage for her new neighbours. The ambition of sharing cultures sustained Nyibol through the rigours of learning a new language\, establishing roots in unfamiliar places and climates\, attending school\, navigating the novel byways of Australian life\, and starting a family of her own.\nIn 2019 Nyibol launched A TUK – a name drawn from a Nuer term meaning ‘Begin’. \nToday\, Nyibol holds firm to the values of autonomy and self-determination\, and her commitments to environmental sustainability and giving back to her community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nArts and cultural activities \nIf you would like to provide feedback on BMI activities you have experienced or have suggestions on what you would like us to consider then we would like to hear from you. SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - Beyond the Wasteland
DESCRIPTION:Filmed in Australia\, USA\, France\, Germany and Japan\, this documentary examines the contemporary culture rooted in Mad Max (1979) and Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) both of which became instant international cult films during the 1980s with their dystopian and post-apocalyptic themes and imagery. The film explores the eccentric world of the fans from around the globe\, their costumes\, and their machines. From the largest international Mad Max gathering in the USA\, Wasteland Weekend\, to Japan’s Mad Max conventions and Australia’s own The Search for Max event in Clunes\, the film marks 40 years of Mad Max as a global phenomenon. The world premier was at the Coburg Village Drive-In in February 2021. Umbrella Entertainment describes the film not only as a film that ‘celebrates life\, but also the ability to change oneself through passion’. Source: Umbrella Entertainment.\nAustralia\, 2021\, 93 min.  Directed by Eddie Beyrouthy\nKooky Australian Documentary\nBallarat Film Society Program\n\nNov\n8\n \n\n\n2:00 pm – 3:00 pm \n\n \n\n \n\nDay Tour of the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute \n\n\n\nNov\n8\n \n\n\n7:00 pm – 9:30 pm \n\nBallarat Film Society – First Cow \n\n\n\nNov\n11\n \n\n\n7:30 pm – 9:00 pm \n\nEric Bogle Live \n\n\n\nNov\n12\n \n\n\n8:00 pm – 9:30 pm \n\nKings of the Blues \n\n\n\nNov\n15\n \n\n\n2:00 pm – 3:00 pm \n\n \n\n \n\nDay Tour of the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute \n\n\n\nView Calendar

SUMMARY:Meet the Author | Once Were Wild by Leslie Scott
DESCRIPTION:About Once Were Wild: \nWhen local Clunes resident Leslie Scott discovers two brumbies living on the rugged Mount Beckworth\, she almost can’t believe it. Brumbies don’t live in Central Victoria\, and the terrain is not suited to them\, so how did they get there? \nThe horses are scared and unused to people\, but the mountain is not a safe place for horses. With summer heat on its way\, the waterholes are drying up and food is getting scarce – and local rumour has it that logging is soon to begin. Looking into the eyes of the young colt she names Milo\, Leslie knows it’s up to her to gain their trust and get them down to safety. \n‘Every day for months Leslie makes the hike up the mountain\, slowly but surely building a connection with Milo and his companion Lucy\, but there are other mysterious things happening up there – bones being rearranged into different shapes – and always the question: who left the horses here in the first place? \nOnce Were Wild is a fascinating and heart-warming story about a woman and her resourcefulness and determination to do what’s right for two beautiful brumbies. \nBookings are essential | Tickets ar $10 per person \n\n \n\n \nOnce Were Wild | Leslie Scott\n \nAbout Leslie\nLeslie Scott’s love for horses and the bush began when she got her first pony at age 6. Her father\, an experienced bushman taught her to listen\, appreciate and be able to read the bush. When Leslie can’t get to the high country\, she immerses herself in the rugged terrain of Mt Beckworth\, a nature reserve seven minutes from her front gate. Leslie lives on a small property with her husband in historical Clunes\, rural Victoria. They have a menagerie of animals. In her spare time she’s either riding her horses in the bush or hiking through it with her dog. For Leslie the bush is not just a place to visit – it’s her home. \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\nDownload Flyer\n\n\nWhy Not become a member\n\n\n \nThis event is a BMI Community Cultural Project – Ballarat’s Oldest Cultural Institution

SUMMARY:Current Affairs Dialogue | Discussion Group | NOW POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:Last months Summary:\nThree members met at the BMI on Thursday 29 September at 1.30 – 3.00 pm for the scheduled CAD session. \nSeveral apologies received. Subject was the Ukraine situation. \nAnother stimulating discussion. It covered the centuries-old background to the current Russia-Ukraine conflict\, rooted as it is in break-up of past empires\, various peace treaties\, often contested and frequently shifting borders in Central Europe\, ethnic and religious rivalries and struggles to retain or take-over fertile territory and strategic sea channels. ( Ballarat’s legacy district names like Sebastopol\, Redan and many street names from the mid 1850s Crimean War were noted in this connection). \nThe claims and counter-claims for the current conflict to be seen as a Russian invasion\, a defence against NATO encroachment\, an economic war\, a patriotic war\, a nationalistic war and its potential to turn into a nuclear were discussed as were the conflict’s potential longer-term and wider effects on leadership\, food supply\, driving changes in reliance on fossil fuel energy as oil & gas supplies are used as bargaining chips\, a retreat from globalisation as supply chains are threatened – all this and much more. You don’t know what you are missing! \nThe Process:\n1pm for 1.30pm start \nInterested in current affairs? Welcome to a new initiative at the BMI designed for you. \nCurrent Affairs Dialogue (CAD) at the BMI: \nCAD will launch in The Reading Room 1-3 pm on Thursday 28 July 2022. CAD at the BMI is designed for members and friends who are interested in joining with similarly interested people as listeners and contributors  in respectful\, informed\, analytic and interpretive  conversations  on issues of significant current public interest. The goal is to have all participants enjoy stimulating discussion and to leave CAD at the BMI sessions feeling their horizons have been extended and their understanding of current affairs deepened. \nDates\, place & format: A light-touch\, flexible structure is proposed to launch the initiative. Program and practice  will evolve in line with participant consensus. Meetings will be in the Reading Room. We will start meetings with a cuppa   and welcome/introduction of new participants.  Intention is to meet on the last THURSDAY of each month  February through November. Topics will be nominated by agreement of participants a month ahead. Participants will be encouraged to identify  insightful written and spoken media pieces that they encounter pertinent to the coming sessions  topic\, to reference or share these pieces with other participants in advance of the next meeting where appropriate  – in other words\, do some purposeful and\, hopefully\, stimulating reading\, listening and thinking before each meeting. Subject to participants’ agreement\, contact details will be shared. Mark Potter\, BMI Cultural Development & Services Manager will provide communications assistance and follow-up. Frank Hurley\, former President and Patron of the BMI will act as convenor/ facilitator for the first few meetings. The idea is that this role be rotated among participants as CAD at the BMI finds its feet. Some sample current issues to set us thinking…Below is a selection of substantial\, wide-ranging  current issues  some or all of which  might be a meeting focus over coming months. Indicatively\, the discussion framework for a  topic would  be to look at and discuss ( order depending on the topic) Discussion framework: \n\nhow did the issue arise\, what are its roots/background/history\,\nwhat is the situation as it stands\,\nhow might it unfold/ effect change in its own\, locale\, at national and global levels.; what significance for us.\n\nSuggested topics: \n\nThe troubled (Dis)United States: Roe V Wade overturn\, guns\, continuing fall-out from 6 January 2021 Capitol riot. ( N.B. It is proposed to make this the topic to get us started at the first meeting on Thursday 28 July)\nRussia’s ongoing military attack on Ukraine\nThe pervasive “Culture “ problem: bad behaviour in Parliament House\, football clubs\, corporations like Crown and Star Casinos \, banks etc. etc.\nCensus 2021: What has changed ? Will keep changing? Advance Australia Where?\nProblems and possibilities of our town: Bakery Hill/Bridge Mall proposals\, hollowing out of the CBD\, Fed Uni’s  announced vacating of Lydiard/Camp St buildings complex\, all those Council “strategy” plans\nYour suggestions?\n\nIf this outline engages your interest\, come along. Help make this initiative a success. Spread the word among  friends you think would be interested. Looking forward to a good representation BMI members and supporters gathering in The Reading Room for the inaugural CAD at the BMI on Thursday 28 July at 1 p.m.  Enquires to:Mark Potter at the BMI on most Wednesdays and Thursdays. SUMMARY:In conversation with Fleur McDonald
DESCRIPTION:Having sold over 700\,000 copies of her books\, Fleur has solidified her position as one of the country’s favourite storytellers. \nAustralia’s leading rural literature author\, Fleur’s books become best sellers almost as quickly as they hit the shelves. Her story lines are drawn from inspiration from having lived and worked for much of her life on farms. Loving the rural life style Fleur now owns 4050ha across rural Western Australia. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to hear about her new book Broad River Station in conversation with local ABC journalist Lexie Jeuniewic (More about Lexie >) \nBooks will be available for purchase\, courtesy Collins Booksellers Ballarat on Lydiard and Fleur will be available for book signings. And as certain as she is about her ability to do the job\, on day one she’s already in conflict with colleagues who believe that women shouldn’t be coppers. \nIt takes the shine off coming home\, where her grandmother\, Clara\, is in the early stages of dementia. Clara is in a nursing home\, living between her present and the mist-covered past of her life as dementia slowly steals her memories. Mia is accustomed to their conversations often not quite making sense but when Clara hints at veiled family secrets\, Mia isn’t sure what she should believe. \nLexie Jeuniewic\nFollow Lexie \n  \nLexie Jeuniewic is a reporter for ABC Ballarat\, covering radio\, digital\, and television. \nShe previously worked as a senior reporter for 9News Sunshine Coast and as a video journalist for 9News Border North-East\, based in Shepparton. \nA former rower\, she continues to enjoy the exploring great outdoors and loves curling up with a great book and cup of tea on a chilly Ballarat afternoon! \n\nTickets\n\n\nDownload Flyer\n\n\nWhy Not become a member\n\n\n \nThis event is a BMI Community Cultural Project – Ballarat’s Oldest Cultural Institution

SUMMARY:Kings of the Blues
DESCRIPTION:Starring Dave Hole\, Shane Pacey and Geoff Achison. \nBB\, FREDDIE and ALBERT represent the pinnacle of blues guitar virtuosity.   They used a minimum to create the maximum blues effect\, and together they set the standard to which all others aspire. And the KINGS were superb vocalists\, ripping into the very soul of the blues. \nSuch is their influence that those who have come closest to emulating their extraordinary power are themselves regarded as Guitar Gods – people like ERC CLAPTON\, STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN\, PETER GREEN and the great JIMI HENDRIX. \nWe are proud to have 3 of Australia’s greatest players\, GEOFF ACHISON\, DAVE HOLE and SHANE PACEY paying homage to these giants.   They will combine their guitar-slinging fretboard talents in a series of exclusive shows performing the music of these Three Kings.

SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - First Cow
DESCRIPTION:With a similar ‘feel’ to McCabe and Mrs. Miller (1971)\, First Cow reveals\, surprisingly\, an America built on racial and social diversity during the birth of American enterprise. Two travellers on the run in the 1820s dream of striking it rich\, relying on a wealthy landowner’s cow which is the first cow to ever reach Oregon. Cookie and King Lu secretly milk the cow and make wonderful treats for the locals. We see what an early local economy might have looked like in America\, with the use of detail – the paraphernalia of pioneer existence – being most alluring and engaging.  Kelly Reichardt is an American director known for her minimalist-style and love of small rural communities. Source: Madman. \nStars: Stars Toby Jones\, Orione Lee and John Magaro. \nUSA\, 121 min. SUMMARY:Book-making Workshop with Maggie Dannatt | 3 November 22
DESCRIPTION:Image: Courtesy Maggie Dannatt \nA workshop in Book-making.\nI made my first book as a teenager\, wanting to save all my favorite Don Martin cartoons from all the Mad magazines I had bought. I later learnt basic bookbinding at art school so that I could bind the books I was illustrating. I have made many sketch books since then and taught these skills to children and adults. \nI love creating art that taps into a sense of play and is easily accesible to everyone. \nIn these workshops we start by making decorated papers that we then paste and sew together to create a simple book. It is a variation on the concertina style. \nThe book will be a beautiful long lasting item to hold photos\, drawings\, writing or all of the above. \nFour part series\nThe series of workshops will be structured to suit each attendees standard. It is necessary to register for the series of 4 workshops. \nWhy not register for the BMI Newsletter > \n \nLearn more about Maggie\n\nMore\n \nView Maggies amazing Pet Portraits\n\nMore\n \nPurchase & confirmation\nTo attend these 4 sessions the cost is $132 (price includes GST)\, *discounts apply to BMI members and Concession holders. SUMMARY:Current Affairs Dialogue | NOW POSTPONED TO 24 NOVEMBER
SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - Quo Vadis\, Aida?
DESCRIPTION:Quo Vadis\, Aida? is inspired by true events.  In Bosnia\, 1995\, middle-aged Aida is a United Nations translator located in the small mountain town of Srebrenica when the Serbian army ignores a UN peace ultimatum and begins a series of round-ups. Aida’s translation skills come into action when Aida and her family find themselves among 30\,000 besieged citizens attempting to find shelter. The director\, herself a survivor of the war\, has made a film of universal urgency and power presenting to the audience an example of unforgettable cinema.
