SUMMARY:Ballarat Chess Club
DESCRIPTION:Meet Thursdays in the Humffray Room\n\nMore information about the club\n \nThe chess table in the photo (which is part of a collage of portraits of old BMI members) is possibly one of those still in use in the BMI Library on the ground floor. The date of the picture\, at a rough guess\, is believed to be between 1866 and 1875. C.J. Harvey (shown on the picture)\, J.Tatham (on the collage) and W.D. Battan (secretary of the BMI\, on the collage and who presented the collage to the BMI in 1910) were active chess-players in 1866-67. They played\, amongst others\, in the infamous Smythesdale handicap-chess tournament\, which lasted 8 months\, and ended in controversy.\n\nMore\n \n\n\nBMI News\n \n\nSocial scene at society screenings | Ballart Film Society\n\nIn the post-Second World War era\, a movement of film… \n\n \n\nRex’s Snippits | Is it AA or A in Ballaarat?\n\nExtract from the Heritage Victoria Register BMI statement of significance…. \n\n \n\nRosemary’s Book of the Week | 8 January 2024\n\nRosemary’s Book of the Week I Remember Paris by Lucy… \n\n \n\nFrom the Curator | Post Office Gallery\n\n 1. SUMMARY:A Body at Work - FAQT
DESCRIPTION:August 23\n@\n8:00 pm\n–\n9:10 pm \n$15 – $30 \nMinerva Space \nA Body at Work\n \nSerial nudist\, Frankie van Kan (AKA Frankie Valentine—Stripped Queer\, Club Briefs\, Baby Got Back\, Seen & Heard Cabaret) achieves the improbable task of exposing more of herself than ever before\, in this deeply intimate piece of confessional theatre. Dubbed “…A dynamite piece of theatre” by ArtsHub\, A Body at Work\, directed by theatre Alumni Maude Davey\, is the tale of a queer woman’s sixteen years—and counting\, in the sex industry. Beginning in a strip club\, with insightfully refreshing antics of strip club culture and the perceived power dynamics between workers and clients\, Frankie unpacks her own whorephobia and the unravelling of boundaries.  \nAs she regales you with stories of the body as a commodity and navigating queerness in this honest\, humorous and heartfelt journey Frankie asks the question—will they love me at my Madonna when they’ve relished me at my whore? SUMMARY:Chasing Dick: A Love Story - FAQT
DESCRIPTION:August 25\n@\n12:00 pm\n–\n1:20 pm \n$15 – $30 \nHeritage Reading Room \nChasing Dick: A Love Story\n \nDax Carney-Hanrahan’s staged reading of a new full length script – Commissioned by Festival of Australian Queer Theatre \n\nWill you let yourself go?\nHow far are you willing to go?\nWho are you willing to let go?\n\nIn a regional city\, far from the CBD\, A conservative accountant father and his good-looking bisexual son will soon find out they have been chasing the same thing. The love of Dick. \nWhen Dick\, a larger-than-life transwoman\, moved into town\, the already strained relationship between father and son took an even more dramatic turn. As they get to have more of Dick they start to question everything they think they know about themselves\, each other and the world. \nChasing Dick tackles significant themes such as the intergenerational gap in views on sexuality\, gender identity\, and expression\, along with the universal search for connection and understanding within families. \nThrough its heartfelt dialogue and poignant interactions\, the play offers a profound commentary on the evolving nature of love and identity in contemporary society. \n\nTickets & full faqt program\n\n \nThis event takes place on Wadawurrung Country. SUMMARY:In Conversation with J.P. Pomare
DESCRIPTION:September 4\n@\n6:00 pm\n–\n8:00 pm \n$10 \n17 Years Later: Who really killed the Primrose family\nby J.P. Pomare.\nThe unputdownable new bestseller by multi-award-winning author J. P. Pomare. \nWho killed the wealthy Primrose family? \nThe violent slaughter of the Primrose family while they slept shocked the nation.\nTheir young live-in chef\, Bill Kareama\, was swiftly charged with murder and brought to justice. But the brutal crime scarred the idyllic town of Cambridge forever. \nSeventeen years later\, true-crime podcaster Sloane Abbott tracks down prison psychologist TK Phillips. Once a fierce campaigner for an appeal\, TK now lives a quiet life with Bill’s case firmly in his past. As Sloane lures a reluctant TK back into the fight\, evidence emerges that casts new light on the Primroses – and who might have wanted them dead. \nWhile the list of suspects grows\, Bill’s innocence is still far from assured. What will it cost Sloane and TK to uncover the truth? \n‘There’s a reason Pomare is called king of the twist’ Herald Sun \n17 Years Later: Who really killed the Primrose family | J.P. Pomare\nAbout the Author\nJ.P. Pomare is an award-winning author whose debut novel\, Call Me Evie (2018)\, won the Ngaio Marsh Award for Best First Novel. In the Clearing (2019) was made into a Disney+ Original Series\, The Clearing\, while Tell Me Lies (2020) was a #1 Audible bestseller and was shortlisted for the Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Novel and the Ned Kelly Award for Best Crime Fiction. \nThe Last Guests (2021) was critically acclaimed\, as was his fifth book\, the top-ten bestseller The Wrong Woman (2022). Home Before Night is his sixth novel and was first published as an Audible Original. J.P. Pomare was born in New Zealand and resides in Melbourne with his wife and daughter. \nJosh Pomare\, Author\n\n\n\n\n\n \nJosh will be In-Conversation with \nLocal ABC Journalist – Gavin McGrath \nAfter more than a decade and a half working the beat as a newspaper reporter\, Gavin McGrath brings an eye (and an ear) for what’s newsworthy\, interesting and just plain unusual in regional Australia to ABC Local Radio. \nGrowing up in regional South Australia and Victoria\, Gavin was a relative latecomer to news journalism (he actually wanted to be a fighter pilot) but studied communications at Deakin University in Warrnambool and has since worked for the Herald Sun (five years) and The Courier in Ballarat (eight years). Prior to becoming a staff reporter\, he worked within the motoring industry and as a motorsport scribe at racetracks around Australia. \nIn his time as a writer Gavin has taken a keen interest in local sport\, rural and farming matters\, and even returned to his first love\, driving and reviewing cars\, but hasn’t been afraid to tackle everything from politics to theatre (including a failed attempt to become Ballarat’s Phantom of the Opera. Sadly he is a terrible singer). \nGavin takes a look at local life in Ballarat and South West Victoria each weekday between 10 and 11am\, and would love to hear your stories. \nGavin McGrath\nEnquiries:  Any event specific enquires should be direct to library@ballaratmi.org.au \n$10 per person plus booking fee & gst includes light refreshment. \n\nBook on-line or contact Rosemary at the Libary via email library@ballaratmi.org.au or phone (03) 5331 3042 \n\nBook here\n\n\n \nCollins Booksellers\, Ballart on Lydiard\nwill be handling book sales for the event. \n\nWhy Not become a member\n\n\n \nWe thank Ballarat Libries for thier support of this event. \n\n \n \nThis event takes place on Wadawurrung Country. SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society | Stop Making Sense
DESCRIPTION:September 12\n@\n7:30 pm\n–\n9:00 pm \nClassic Talking Heads Concert\nViewing a filmed music concert has been a tradition of the BFS\, so this year we are fortunate to have a new remastering of the very famous 1983 concert that Talking Heads did over four live shows at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles. \nDirector Jonathan Demme is known for his film Silence of the Lambs (1991) which won 5 Academy Awards and best picture. David Byrne implored the band to wear neutral coloured clothing to ensure an optimum camera recording and quite a lot of editing took place but the reviews of the film are astounding. On the Rotten Tomatoes aggregator\, Stop Making Sense holds an approval rating of 100% based on 66 reviews: an average of 9.3 out of 10. Why Talking Heads? Well\, they are pretty well known plus they are very\, very good on stage. Enjoy! Madman. \nUSA\, 1984 Digital Remaster. Dir: Jonathan Demme. Actors include David Byrne\, Chris Frantz\, Jerry Harrison and Talking Heads musicians. \n \nBallarat Film Society \n  \nMembership \n12 months – Feb-December: $60\n6 months – Feb-June or July-Dec: $30 \nTo join or renew your membership\, please e-mail or phone Angus McLachlan (5374 2474)\, or come with cash on the night. \nMembership can be paid by bank transfer or with cash. \nFor film enquiries\, phone Sue Nunn: 5341 2266 or visit the  Ballarat Film Society website \nAll films are subject to availability.
