She dreamed of being in a community free of conflict – and of translating all of the flavours of her Nuer heritage for her new neighbours. The ambition of sharing cultures sustained Nyibol through the rigours of learning a new language\, establishing roots in unfamiliar places and climates\, attending school\, navigating the novel byways of Australian life\, and starting a family of her own.\nIn 2019 Nyibol launched A TUK – a name drawn from a Nuer term meaning ‘Begin’. \nToday\, Nyibol holds firm to the values of autonomy and self-determination\, and her commitments to environmental sustainability and giving back to her community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nArts and cultural activities \nIf you would like to provide feedback on BMI activities you have experienced or have suggestions on what you would like us to consider then we would like to hear from you. SUMMARY:Choose Happiness | A Public Talk\, Buddhist Monk\, Gen Kelsang Dornying
DESCRIPTION:It’s not uncommon to feel we are wandering aimlessly through life. Searching for\, but never truly finding\, the contentment and happiness we seek. What have you daydreamed about and wished for in your life? For some it’s a large house\, well paid job or fast car. For others it’s reputation\, good looks\, power\, excitement or adventure. Many seek meaning and happiness in relationships. All these things can make us superficially happy for a short while\, but they can never give us the pure and everlasting happiness that all of us\, in our heart of hearts\, long for. Happiness is a state of mind\, so it’s cause must also be within the mind. The real cause of\nhappiness is inner peace. \nJoin Buddhist monk Gen Kelsang Dornying for a one-night-only public talk on true happiness. Gen Dornying will explain the art of meditation\, and how to enjoy great quality of life – whatever happens! \nKadampa Meditation Centre Australia | Ballarat Branch\n0455205589 | info@kadampa.org.au\nKMC Australia is a not-for-profit organisation\nABN 86 114 195 550 \nThe teacher of this public talk is Gen Kelsang Dornying\, the Resident Teacher of Kadampa Meditation Centre Australia and Kadampa Meditation Centre Melbourne. \nGen Dornying has been teaching Kadampa Buddhism for 20 years and teaches with a warmth and humilty that is naturally inspiring. \n \nCost: $25 for non-members | $10 for members. \nBookings: meditateinmelbourne.org/pages/special-events \nFollow Kadampa

SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - La Strada
DESCRIPTION:Italy\, 1954\, b/w\, 94 min.  Directed by Federico Fellini\nFellini Classic Neo-Realism \nStarring Giulietta Masina\, Anthony Quinn and Richard Basehart\, and produced by Dino De Laurentiis and Carlo Ponti\, La Strada was Fellini’s 4th film and ensured his international reputation. Told in a fabulist style with a focus on love and jealousies\, it is set in a circus featuring the brutish strongman Zampano (Quinn) and the plucky Gelsomina (Masina): brutish and innocent characters\, both with intense emotions and desires. Throughout his film-making career\, Fellini was fascinated by the tensions between a character’s theatrical façade and messy interior life. The film was controversial; however it has become one of the most influential films ever made. Confront Fellini’s 1950s sensibility\, the tragedy of circus life and the enthralling music of Nino Rata. La Strada won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film in 1957.

SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - Brooklyn
DESCRIPTION:Ireland/UK/Canada\, 2015\, 112 min. Directed by John Crowley\nNostalgic Irish Émigré Romance\n\nReceiving a standing ovation at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and faithfully adapted from the novel by Colm Toibin\, Brooklyn tells the story of Eilis (Saoirse Ronan)\, a young woman from Enniscorthy\, County Wexford who finds herself in the new world of New York. Although big city excitement\, Italian charm and delicious food stir her love of life\, weddings and funerals call her back to Ireland where another phase of her life begins. Set in the 1950s\, Brooklyn harks back in style to the “women’s pictures” of the mid-20th century that were the backbone of popular cinema\, when stars like Bette Davis\, Joan Crawford and Barbara Stanwyck ruled the screen. It is largely a film about being torn between time\, place and identity: in America Eilis is a woman with a future\, yet in both worlds\, she is filled with longing and a sense of displacement. Also starring the fabulous Julie Walters\, Jim Broadbent\, Domhnall Gleeson and Fiona Glascott you will be won over by its low-key charm. \nThis film is presented in association with the Ballarat Irish Association.

SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - Both Sides of the Blade
DESCRIPTION:France\, 2021\, 116 min.  Directed by Claire Denis\nScorching Love Triangle Drama \nCelebrated veteran film director\, Claire Denis developed and shot this film during different stages of Covid-19 lockdowns in France (as is reflected in some of the outdoor scenes). Juliette Binoche and Vincent Lindon play an apparently happy couple whose relationship is unsettled when Francois\, Sara’s ex-lover and Jean’s former friend\, suddenly reappears in their lives. The title Both Sides of the Blade comes from a song used in the film\, while the French title\, Avec amour et encharnement\, translates as Love and Fury – but it is also being distributed in English-language cinemas as Fire. The film bubbles with sexual tension and romantic ambivalence whilst simmering in the background are post-colonialist tensions and the continual sting of global economics\, themes that Denis continually interrogates in her work. This contemporary drama won the 2022 Berlin International Film Festival’s Silver Bear for Best Director and has been voted into Sight and Sound’s top 50 films for 2022.  A steamy complex film\, dancing around the danger of old flames.

SUMMARY:Book Launch | Look Back on Languor: The memoir of a hurkle-durkle Australian male
DESCRIPTION:Dr Frank Hurley OAM is well-known and highly respected in the Ballarat community\, nowhere more so than in BMI circles has written a memoir titled Look Back on Languor: The memoir of a hurkle-durkle Australian male. The book will be launched at the BMI\, in the Humffray Room\, at 5.00 – 6.30 p.m. on Friday 14 April by The Hon. Steve Bracks\, AC. \n \nFrank reckons that the old Scots phrase “hurkle durkle”\,  meaning “to lie in bed\, or lounge\, long after it is time to get up”  sums him up well. \nFrank served on the BMI Committee for over 30 years till retiring in 2013. He was then BMI Patron for a further five years. He served numerous terms as President and as Secretary. He played a leading role in the restoration and revitalisation of the BMI in the ten or so years from 2000. \nIn other spheres\, Frank was deeply involved\, as a senior academic for 25 years\, in the evolution of the University of Ballarat (now Federation University) and in the establishment of the University’s Arts Academy city campus in the complex of former government buildings on Camp/Lydiard Streets. \nFrank lived some of his boyhood years in Howitt St\, Wendouree. He attended St. Columba’s Primary School and St Patrick’s College before moving to Melbourne in 1952. With his wife Helen and their four daughters\, he returned for a “second coming in Ballarat”\, as his memoir terms it\, in 1974. Over the 40 years since\, he has been a prominent participant in social\, political\, cultural and educational affairs as a media commentator\, writer\, speaker and member of a wide range of committees and organisations. \nWith insight\, candour and wit\, in this memoir Frank recounts and reflects on his experiences\, his beliefs\, values and the changing times of his life. \n \nThe book will be available for sale at the launch and after at the BMI library\, with 10% of all sales going to the BMI. \nThe launch event will follow the pattern of BMI talks. Light refreshments will be available and the bar will be open for purchase of drinks. SUMMARY:Meet the Author | Olivia Wearne & Elizabeth Coleman
DESCRIPTION:The Woman Who Knew Too Little by Olivia Wearne \nA Routine Infidelity by Elizabeth Coleman\nTHE similarities keep coming for two local authors who discovered they recently published their latest works a couple of days apart from each other. \nNow Elizabeth Coleman and Olivia Wearne have become fast friends following the release of their second novels. \nBoth crime fiction books\, Coleman’s is titled A Routine Infidelity and Wearne’s The Woman Who Knew Too Little. \n“I got an email from my agent saying there was another author in Ballarat whose story was very similar to mine and asked if I wanted to meet her\,” Coleman said. \n“We met for coffee and she said ‘my second book’s coming out’ and I said my second book’s coming out! \n“Her book has a female detective. My book has a female detective. It was uncanny\, so we thought we would join forces and get ourselves out there through these remarkable coincidences.” \nBoth screenwriters by trade\, Wearne moved to Ballarat and started writing professionally 15 years ago while Coleman has been crafting words for 30 years and relocated to the region in the last half-decade. \nColeman said the pair’s shared screenwriting influences is a prominent factor in both their styles. \n“Another similarity we share is that our screen experiences have really helped us with story structure\,” she said. \n“Both our stories kind of move along quickly because we’ve had to work to commercial breaks and things like that.” \nColeman said it’s important for Australian creatives to support each other. \n“It’s such a small industry here\, anything creative\,” she said.” We’re competing with enormous overseas giants. \n“It’s very important we all support each other and lift each other up.” \nSource: Ballarat Times : 8 March 2023 by Tim Bottams. \nhttps://timesnewsgroup.com.au/ballarat/print-editions/full-digital-edition-3-march-2/ \n\n\nMore about the author\n \n1948. An unidentified dead man is found on Somerton Beach\, Adelaide. Officer Kitty Wheeler yearns to work the case – but the city’s women police are typically assigned to more domestic matters. A wryly funny\, sharply observed novel about one of Australia’s great mysteries\, and the life choices available to mid-century women. \nDecember\, 1948. Officer Kitty Wheeler is a member of the Women Police\, responsible for ‘upholding the moral virtue’ of Adelaide’s at times unruly and amorous citizens. Patrolling Somerton beach one night\, Kitty and her partner spot a man leaning against the sea wall\, apparently drunk. It’s late\, they’re tired\, and they leave him to sleep it off … \nThe man is dead\, his identity unknown\, and Kitty has missed a career-making opportunity. In the following months\, the case of the Somerton Man grips first Adelaide\, then Australia\, as bizarre clues point towards international espionage\, Eastern mysticism or salacious scandal. Kitty\, preoccupied with the case\, joins the investigation wherever she can\, although the men are firmly in charge. Meanwhile\, she must decide whether she wants husband and family\, or a career – in 1940s Australia\, she can’t have both. Her boyfriend Peter wants to pop the question\, but Kitty is keener on solving the case … \nOlivia Wearne has threaded Kitty’s story into the real-life 1940s mystery of the Somerton Man. This intriguing\, sharply observed and wholly engaging novel explores the life and crimes of a city and its people\, few of whom are without their secrets. \nAbout the Author \nOlivia Wearne began her writing career as a screenwriter and has several film credits to her name. After receiving a Masters in creative writing she went on to write The Grand Tour\, which was published in 2020. Born and raised in Melbourne\, Olivia now resides in Ballarat\, Victoria\, with her filmmaker husband and two sons. \n\n\nMore about the author\n \nA delightfully sharp and clever murder mystery\, perfect for fans of Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club. \nSynopsis: \nPrivate investigator Edwina ‘Ted’ Bristol deals in the cheating husbands and missing chihuahuas of Melbourne\, but yearns for the heart-stopping excitement of real crime. When \nWhen Ted discovers her sister Bob has fallen prey to an internet catfishing scam\, she sets out with her beloved miniature schnauzer and shrewd sidekick\, Miss Marple\, to catch the swindler. Meanwhile\, when conducting routine surveillance on a couple suspected of having an affair\, she uncovers a plot to embezzle millions. \nAs Bob’s case takes a series of bizarre twists and turns and the embezzlement escalates into murder\, Ted finds her own life in peril. Will she crack her first criminal case before it’s too late? \nPraise for A Routine Infidelity: \nClever plotting\, memorable characters – a delight! \nKerry Greenwood\nAuthor of the Phryne Fisher Murder Mysteries \nWith Miss Marple as your sidekick how can you lose? I loved every minute with PI Ted\, her friends\, family\, associates… A Routine Infidelity makes the beginning of an excellent series! \nRWR McDonald\, author of The Nancys \nHigh drama\, snappy dialogue and sensational plot twists… This is your regular\, first-class page turner. \nThe Age and Sydney Morning Herald \nA Routine Infidelity is the first in a new series that is perfect for fans of classic crime dramas. \nReadings \nElizabeth Coleman Biography: \nElizabeth Coleman is a successful screenwriter who has written for many beloved Australian dramas\, including every season of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries.
