DESCRIPTION:Faye Heininger \nFaye started Lilli Pilli Beads (a paper bead jewellery and accessories company) after moving to Ballarat in September 2019. She has a background in art and started creating art in high school. She has a diploma of Interior Design\, a Certificate III in Visual Art and has worked in marketing for almost 30 years\, running her own company for 15. Her loves are drawing\, art/art galleries and architecture\, and is a self-taught bead-maker. \nUnique jewellery \nI make beads from paper and turn them into jewellery. My jewellery is lightweight\, comfortable\, beautiful and are bespoke creations. I am always looking for sustainable materials to include in my bead creation and jewellery making process. \nWorkshop outline \nThis workshop is designed for adult beginners. It is an opportunity to learn new skills and to create your own bespoke\, single-strand paper bead necklace. \nFormat \nThe workshop will be a two-day course. \nSession 1 will be a four-hour session where you will learn to make paper beads. In this session\, I will teach you how to: \n\nPick the right paper.\nCreate different bead shapes.\nHow to roll and create desired bead shapes\, and\nHow to seal your beads.\n\nSession 2 will be a two-hour session focusing on the build and assemblage of the necklace and you will learn how to: \n\nCreate your necklace using the sealed beads made in session 1.\nSelect some complimentary jewellery findings to enhance your beads\, and\nLearn a simple sliding knot to complete the necklace.\n\nWhat is provided \n\nAll materials.\nBead paper.\nGlue & sealer.\nFindings (acrylic beads to put between the paper beads).\nNylon cord rope.\nBaby wipes.\nSilk bag for finished jewellery.\n\nTools you will use \n\nCraft mat.\nBead rollers.\nPaint brushes.\nPin nosed glue pots for application to beads.\nFlocked bead design boards.\nWater pots.\n\nPaper beads | Faye Heininger\nPaper bead-making | Faye Heininger\nA brief history of paper beads \nThe creation of paper beads has been said to have started in England as far back as the Victorian age. Young ladies would get together and spend their time creating paper beads out of beautifully elaborate wallpaper scraps. \nTo create their paper beads\, knitting needles were used and trimmed wallpaper scraps were wrapped around them to form the beads. The beads would then sealed and polished with bees wax. \nThese Victorian women were said to have created beaded curtains and room dividers with their paper beads. Today we can only imagine how beautiful these creations were. \nPaper bead making made a comeback in the 1920s and ‘30s when young women were making the beads smaller and using them in the creation of jewellery. \nThey also used knitting needles to create their paper beads\, but they used newsprint and other printed papers which created much smaller beads. These crafty women also started to use their perfumes on the finished beads\, creating scented paper beads. This was a time when perfumes were extremely expensive and hard to come by\, so this was a way they could wear their favourite scents every day. \nIn recent times \nCreating paper beads in the modern era is pretty much the same as in the Victorian era and early 2oth century\, except that a wider variety of papers are easily obtainable\, like rice paper\, construction paper\, and a lot more. The various types of paper we now use clearly adds character and texture to the final product. \nThere are now plenty of tools and resources to help in the creation of paper beads. Apart from endless paper products\, there are also many sophisticated hand rolling tools\, glues\, and sealers to take the final bead products to the next level. \nIn the Philippines\, paper beads are helping local communities generate income. This is also a way to resolve serious waste management problems. \nIn Uganda\, paper beads are made in co-operatives as part of development projects. DESCRIPTION:1pm for 1.30pm start \nInterested in current affairs? Welcome to a new initiative at the BMI designed for you. \nCurrent Affairs Dialogue (CAD) at the BMI: \nCAD will launch in The Reading Room 1-3 pm on Thursday 28 July 2022. CAD at the BMI is designed for members and friends who are interested in joining with similarly interested people as listeners and contributors  in respectful\, informed\, analytic and interpretive  conversations  on issues of significant current public interest. The goal is to have all participants enjoy stimulating discussion and to leave CAD at the BMI sessions feeling their horizons have been extended and their understanding of current affairs deepened.  \nDates\, place & format: A light-touch\, flexible structure is proposed to launch the initiative. Program and practice  will evolve in line with participant consensus. Meetings will be in the Reading Room. We will start meetings with a cuppa   and welcome/introduction of new participants.  Intention is to meet on the last THURSDAY of each month  February through November. Topics will be nominated by agreement of participants a month ahead. Participants will be encouraged to identify  insightful written and spoken media pieces that they encounter pertinent to the coming sessions  topic\, to reference or share these pieces with other participants in advance of the next meeting where appropriate  – in other words\, do some purposeful and\, hopefully\, stimulating reading\, listening and thinking before each meeting. Subject to participants’ agreement\, contact details will be shared. Mark Potter\, BMI Cultural Development & Services Manager will provide communications assistance and follow-up. Frank Hurley\, former President and Patron of the BMI will act as convenor/ facilitator for the first few meetings. The idea is that this role be rotated among participants as CAD at the BMI finds its feet. Some sample current issues to set us thinking… Below is a selection of substantial\, wide-ranging  current issues  some or all of which  might be a meeting focus over coming months. Indicatively\, the discussion framework for a  topic would  be to look at and discuss ( order depending on the topic) Discussion framework: \n\nhow did the issue arise\, what are its roots/background/history\,\nwhat is the situation as it stands\,\nhow might it unfold/ effect change in its own\, locale\, at national and global levels.; what significance for us.\n\n Suggested topics: \n\nThe troubled (Dis)United States: Roe V Wade overturn\, guns\, continuing fall-out from 6 January 2021 Capitol riot. ( N.B. It is proposed to make this the topic to get us started at the first meeting on Thursday 28 July) \nRussia’s ongoing military attack on Ukraine\nThe pervasive “Culture “ problem: bad behaviour in Parliament House\, football clubs\, corporations like Crown and Star Casinos \, banks etc. etc.\nCensus 2021: What has changed ? Will keep changing? Three core issues are suggested toframe discussion: \n\nMass shootings and the gun culture;\nDivision around the Supreme Court overturning the Roe v Wade ruling on abortion;\nThe ongoing fall-out from the contested 2020 Presidential election.\n\n1pm for 1.30pm start \nInterested in current affairs? Welcome to a new initiative at the BMI designed for you. \nCurrent Affairs Dialogue (CAD) at the BMI: \nCAD will launch in The Reading Room 1-3 pm on Thursday 28 July 2022. CAD at the BMI is designed for members and friends who are interested in joining with similarly interested people as listeners and contributors  in respectful\, informed\, analytic and interpretive  conversations  on issues of significant current public interest. The goal is to have all participants enjoy stimulating discussion and to leave CAD at the BMI sessions feeling their horizons have been extended and their understanding of current affairs deepened.  \nDates\, place & format: A light-touch\, flexible structure is proposed to launch the initiative. Program and practice  will evolve in line with participant consensus. Meetings will be in the Reading Room. We will start meetings with a cuppa   and welcome/introduction of new participants.  Intention is to meet on the last THURSDAY of each month  February through November. Topics will be nominated by agreement of participants a month ahead. Participants will be encouraged to identify  insightful written and spoken media pieces that they encounter pertinent to the coming sessions  topic\, to reference or share these pieces with other participants in advance of the next meeting where appropriate  – in other words\, do some purposeful and\, hopefully\, stimulating reading\, listening and thinking before each meeting. Subject to participants’ agreement\, contact details will be shared. Mark Potter\, BMI Cultural Development & Services Manager will provide communications assistance and follow-up. Frank Hurley\, former President and Patron of the BMI will act as convenor/ facilitator for the first few meetings. The idea is that this role be rotated among participants as CAD at the BMI finds its feet. Some sample current issues to set us thinking… Below is a selection of substantial\, wide-ranging  current issues  some or all of which  might be a meeting focus over coming months. Indicatively\, the discussion framework for a  topic would  be to look at and discuss ( order depending on the topic) Discussion framework: \n\nhow did the issue arise\, what are its roots/background/history\,\nwhat is the situation as it stands\,\nhow might it unfold/ effect change in its own\, locale\, at national and global levels.; what significance for us.\n\n Suggested topics: \n\nThe troubled (Dis)United States: Roe V Wade overturn\, guns\, continuing fall-out from 6 January 2021 Capitol riot. ( N.B. It is proposed to make this the topic to get us started at the first meeting on Thursday 28 July) \nRussia’s ongoing military attack on Ukraine\nThe pervasive “Culture “ problem: bad behaviour in Parliament House\, football clubs\, corporations like Crown and Star Casinos \, banks etc. etc.\nCensus 2021: What has changed ? Will keep changing? Advance Australia Where?\nProblems and possibilities of our town: Bakery Hill/Bridge Mall proposals\, hollowing out of the CBD\, Fed Uni’s  announced vacating of Lydiard/Camp St buildings complex\, all those Council “strategy” plans\nYour suggestions?\n\nIf this outline engages your interest\, come along. The effective collection and treatment of organic waste is an issue that food manufacturers\, local councils\, agriculture operations and Governments currently face and must resolve if they are to meet the target of halving the amount of food waste entering landfill by 2030 (Victorian Government\, 2020). \nAnaerobic Digestion (AD) presents significant opportunity to address key challenges related to organic waste disposal and renewable energy generation for industry and communities\, and whilst it is a proven technology for producing renewable energy from organic waste streams overseas\, there are a number of barriers currently prevent it from being commercially viable in Australia. We might spare 5 minutes to discuss Geelong’s premiership win. Go Cats!)\n\nReview of 25 August Session:\nCAD had its first discussion session on Thursday 25 August. \nSubject\, as advertised\, was “The (Dis) United States”. \nDiscussion ranged over personal experience and observations from time living in or visiting the USA and focused on three socially and politically divisive current issues: \n\nThe US Supreme Court’s recent decision over-turning constitutional rights to abortion (Roe v Wade in shorthand reference).\nRecurrent mass shootings in the USA and their context of cultural attitudes to gun ownership\, racial and geographic divisions and partisan political stances on gun reform.\nThe ongoing fall-out from the November 2020 Presidential election and 6 January 2021 Capitol riot. In this third issue\, the group ranged over the US electoral system\, conspiracy theories\, the prospect of a Trump or other “Trumpist” Republican Presidential victory in 2024\, whether Trump might be prosecuted or not – with pragmatic considerations of avoiding deeper division\, even the risk of civil war and collapse of democracy\, and strategic/economic implications for Australia\nof various alternative USA scenarios.\n\nWow! All that in 90 minutes. Bet you wish you were there! Too late\, but look on the bright side – you can be at the next monthly CAD session. \nThe Process:\n1pm for 1.30pm start \nInterested in current affairs? Welcome to a new initiative at the BMI designed for you. \nCurrent Affairs Dialogue (CAD) at the BMI: \nCAD will launch in The Reading Room 1-3 pm on Thursday 28 July 2022. CAD at the BMI is designed for members and friends who are interested in joining with similarly interested people as listeners and contributors  in respectful\, informed\, analytic and interpretive  conversations  on issues of significant current public interest. The goal is to have all participants enjoy stimulating discussion and to leave CAD at the BMI sessions feeling their horizons have been extended and their understanding of current affairs deepened. \nDates\, place & format: A light-touch\, flexible structure is proposed to launch the initiative. Program and practice  will evolve in line with participant consensus. Meetings will be in the Reading Room. We will start meetings with a cuppa   and welcome/introduction of new participants.  Intention is to meet on the last THURSDAY of each month  February through November. Topics will be nominated by agreement of participants a month ahead. Participants will be encouraged to identify  insightful written and spoken media pieces that they encounter pertinent to the coming sessions  topic\, to reference or share these pieces with other participants in advance of the next meeting where appropriate  – in other words\, do some purposeful and\, hopefully\, stimulating reading\, listening and thinking before each meeting. DESCRIPTION:Last months Summary:\nThree members met at the BMI on Thursday 29 September at 1.30 – 3.00 pm for the scheduled CAD session. \nSeveral apologies received. Subject was the Ukraine situation. \nAnother stimulating discussion. It covered the centuries-old background to the current Russia-Ukraine conflict\, rooted as it is in break-up of past empires\, various peace treaties\, often contested and frequently shifting borders in Central Europe\, ethnic and religious rivalries and struggles to retain or take-over fertile territory and strategic sea channels. ( Ballarat’s legacy district names like Sebastopol\, Redan and many street names from the mid 1850s Crimean War were noted in this connection). \nThe claims and counter-claims for the current conflict to be seen as a Russian invasion\, a defence against NATO encroachment\, an economic war\, a patriotic war\, a nationalistic war and its potential to turn into a nuclear were discussed as were the conflict’s potential longer-term and wider effects on leadership\, food supply\, driving changes in reliance on fossil fuel energy as oil & gas supplies are used as bargaining chips\, a retreat from globalisation as supply chains are threatened – all this and much more.
