SUMMARY:Ballarat International Foto Biennale | Number One | Gudinski
DESCRIPTION:Image: Image: Brian Purnell\, Michael Gudinski\, Courtesy of Mushroom Creative House \nNumber One | Gudinski \n(currently open Thursday to Sunday | updated 13/10/21) \nThis element of the Ballarat International Foto Biennale will be held in the Basement of the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute. \nWe are thrilled to be a part of this wonderful event. \nAbout this installation \nIn celebration of Michael Gudinski’s legacy\, the Ballarat International Foto Biennale in partnership with Mushroom Group presents an exhibition of music photography. Through an Open Call\, music photographers were given the opportunity to submit photographs featuring artists under the Mushroom Group and Frontier Touring banner. Number One | Gudinski is an ode to Michael Gudinski\, whose passion for music was legendary. This exhibition celebrates his advocacy for the arts and lasting impact. \nOften referred to by those in the know as the Godfather of Aussie music\, Michael Gudinski is widely recognised as the most powerful and influential figure in the Australian music industry. As Chairman of Mushroom Group – the largest independent music and entertainment company in Australia and New Zealand\, home to Frontier Touring\, Chugg Entertainment\, eight record labels and over two dozen other specialist divisions – Gudinski’s clout was undeniable. The exhibition features photographs of Elton John\, Paul McCartney\, Vance Joy\, Courtney Barnett\, Troye Sivan and many more. \nAbout the Foto Beinnale \nThe Ballarat International Foto Biennale was founded in 2005 and attracts significant international and Australian photographers as one of Australia’s pre-eminent photographic festivals. It is a not-for-profit event that immerses the historic town of Ballarat in photographic art. \nNow in its 16th year\, the Ballarat International Foto Biennale has enriched the cultural landscape of regional Victoria\, becoming the most significant\, prestigious photographic arts festival in Australia. Held every two years we showcase work from domestic and international artists that is new\, previously unseen in Australia or contextualised afresh; and in our Open Program we foster the development of emerging artists. Alongside there are public programs and education programs comprising talks\, workshops and prizes which round out a rich and diverse cultural event that attracts more than 30\,000 people\, delivering significant economic and cultural impact. \nThe Ballarat International Foto Biennale is guided by the principle that it not only serves the community but also plays a vital role in cultivating it. \nThe Ballarat International Foto Biennale has attracted more than 200\,000 visitors to Ballarat and was honoured in 2018 at the Federation Business School and Commerce Ballarat Business Excellence Awards as the winner of the Visit Ballarat Events and Attractions Business Award. Its Founding Director\, Jeff Moorfoot OAM received an Order of Australia Medal for services to photography. \nWe are Australia’s leading photographic festival. We’ve done this by consistently finding new ways to engage audiences with photography\, responding to our audience’s needs\, their changing vision of art and culture\, and the role it plays in shaping Ballarat. We recognise and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people as the First Australians. Through photography\, we see our world reflected back in unexpected ways through the eyes of others: artists\, community and new perspectives. \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nBook now >

It is anticipated that members will read the selected book prior to attendance. If you would like to be a part of this group (free to BMI members) please complete the Expression of Interest. We welcome your feedback through this form as we progress this great new initiative. \nExpression of Interest to participate >\nFor more information go to\n\n \nFebruary Reading More>\n \nJANUARY SESSION \nThe Dictionary of Lost Words | Pip Williams \nIn 1901\, the word bondmaid was discovered missing from the Oxford English Dictionary. This is the story of the girl who stole it. \nMotherless and irrepressibly curious\, Esme spends her childhood in the Scriptorium\, a garden shed in Oxford where her father and a team of lexicographers are gathering words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. \nEsme’s place is beneath the sorting table\, unseen and unheard. One day\, she sees a slip containing the word bondmaid flutter to the floor unclaimed. Esme seizes the word and hides  it in an old wooden trunk that belongs to her friend\, Lizzie\,  a young servant in the big house. Esme begins to collect other words from the Scriptorium that are misplaced\, discarded or have been neglected by the dictionary men. They help her make sense of the world. \nOver time\, Esme realises that some words are considered more important than others\, and that words and meanings relating to women’s experiences often go unrecorded. She begins to collect words for another dictionary: The Dictionary of Lost Words. \nSet when the women’s suffrage movement was at its height and the Great War loomed\, The Dictionary of Lost Words reveals a lost narrative\,  hidden between the lines of a history written by men. It’s a delightful\, lyrical and deeply thought-provoking celebration of words\, and the power of language to shape our experience of the world… \nReview this title \nWhy not review this book for the benefit of our members. It was her ‘soul place’ she said – a sanctuary she had been forced to leave when the Nazis swept to power. The trip was a chance to see the house one last time\, to remember it as it was. But the house had changed. \nTwenty years later Thomas returned to Berlin. The house now stood empty\, derelict\, and soon to be demolished. A concrete footpath cut through the garden\, marking where the Berlin Wall had stood for nearly three decades. Elsewhere were signs of what the house had once been – blue tiles showing behind wallpaper\, phographs fallen between floorboards\, flagstones covered in dirt. Evidence of five families who had made the house their home over a tumultuous century. \nThe House by the Lake is a groundbreaking work of history\, revealing the story of Germany through the inhabitants of one small wooden building: a nobleman farmer\, a prosperous Jewish family\, a renowned Nazi composer\, a widow and her children\, a Stasi informant. Moving from the late nineteenth century to the present day\, from the devastation of two world wars to the dividing and reuniting of a nation\, it is a story of domestic joy and contentment\, of terrible grief and tragedy\, and of a hatred handed down through the generations. Breathtaking in scope\, intimate in detail\, it is the long-awaited new history from the author of the bestselling Hanns and Rudolf. \nReview this title \nWhy not review this book for the benefit of our members. SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - De Gaulle
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the 32nd Alliance Françoise French Film Festival in Melbourne\, we are screening the latest spectacularly mounted biopic on Charles de Gaulle. \nIn Paris\, 1940\, France is facing military and political collapse as World War 11 intensifies. The government panics and considers accepting defeat however on June 18th the BBC provides 4 minutes of airtime to Charles de Gaulle\, the leader in exile to address the people of France: a speech that history regards as a formative moment for the French Resistance. \nThe film focuses on just 2 months as events spiral out of control and de Gaulle’s family must set out on the roads of exodus whilst he travels to London to meet Winston Churchill. So revered was de Gaulle as a national figure in France\, when his death was announced in 1970 his successor Georges Pompidou announced: ‘General de Gaulle is dead. France is a widow’. \nPalace Films. \n\n\n\n\nFrance\, 2020\, 108 min.\nDirector: Gabriel Le Bomin.

SUMMARY:Ballarat Anzacs | Display | Talks | Research
DESCRIPTION:BALLARAT ANZACS | Display \nAt the outbreak of the war in August 1914 Ballarat men were quick to enlist. While most consider the Gallipoli landing on April 25th 1915 to be Australia’s first action of the war\, Ballarat’s first casualty occurred on September 14th 1914 with the loss of the submarine AE 1 off the north coast of New Guinea. Crew member\, John ‘Jack’ Messenger\, became the first Ballarat serviceman to lose his life in what became known as the Great War. \nBallarat’s Avenue of Honour commemorates the service of 3801 men and women from the district\, 758 of whom gave their lives\, their sacrifice recognised on the National Roll of Honour at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Among these were nurses Gertrude Munro and Blodwyn Williams\, and George Merz\, the first Australian pilot to lose his life in the war. Some were killed in desperately unlucky circumstances. William Paisley was killed by a lightning strike\, Harold Dixon was struck by a train in Egypt\, Otto Davies was run over by a horse drawn wagon while sleeping and Robert Geddes fell overboard on the trip home. In addition to those on the Roll of Honour\, there were around 150 more who returned\, and died in the years after the war\, whose death was attributed primarily to their war service. \nMany Ballarat ANZACs served with great distinction. For his gallantry at Lone Pine\, Gallipoli\, William Dunstan was awarded a Victoria Cross\, the only Ballarat man to have received that award. Leslie Morshead and Albert Coates\, both from Tress Street\, Mt. Pleasant\, served in WW1 then again in WW2 with such distinction that they were both awarded knighthoods. Sister Rachel Pratt was amongst the many from the Avenue of Honour who were awarded high level gallantry and service awards. \nThe Ballarat community took great pride in the service provided by its citizens\, shown by the creation of the nationally significant Arch of Victory and Avenue of Honour. In recent years the Garden of the Grieving Mother was created to reflect the experience of so many people at home while their ANZAC sons and daughters were serving our country. \nThis display will chronical some of these stories. \nThe Display \n\nThe display will be during regular operating hours of the Library. 10am – 2pm weekdays and 9.30am – 12noon Saturdays.\nResearch | Tuesday’s & Thursday’s | 12 noon – 2pm\nTalks  | Thursdays’ at 11am\n\nArch of Victory c.1925 | Ballarat Mechanics’ Institute Max Harris Photographic Collection MH 1211\nBALLARAT ANZACS | Talks \nGarry Snowden\, President\, Arch of Victory & Avenue of Honour will facilitate a talk on each Thursday of the display: \nThursday 7 April\, 11am | BALLARAT ANZACS: Stories of Courage Sacrifice & Larrikinism | Garry Snowden \nThursday 14 April\, 11am | BALLARAT ANZACS: Mining Mud & Medals | Yvon Davis \nThursday 21 April\, 11am | BALLARAT ANZACS: The Arch of Victory & Avenue of Honour | Phil Roberts \nThursday 28 April\, 11am | BALLART ANZACS: How Ballarat Remembers it’s ANZACS | Garry Snowden \nThese sessions are free\, we would however appreciate registration of attendance\, but walkins will be welcomed\, each talk will be approximately 40 minutes. Ballarat ANZACs Talks Registration > \nBALLARAT ANZACS | Research \nGarry with the assistance of Neil Leckie from the Ballarat Ranger Military Museum and Yvon Davis will be available to assist with family research into Ballarat’s ANZACs in the Heritage Reading Room on Tuesdays & Thursdays between 12.00 and 2.00pm. \nIf you would like to take advantage of this opportunity please complete the enquiry form below: \nSpecial note: If you are expecting to take-away data from your research\, please ensure you bring a USB stick or another form of electronic information storage. \nBallarat ANZACs Research Request >  \nMining Mud & Medals \nYvon Davis will be on hand to talk about this wonderful book by the members of the Ballarat based Victorian Interpretive Projects group. SUMMARY:Joe Avati | 25 Live - Have Some Respect Tour
DESCRIPTION:The comedian touted as Australia’s answer to Seinfeld is back with a brand new show for 2022 – and with most of us needing a good laugh after the events of the last two years\, his tour will be just the ticket.\nAfter surviving the world’s longest lockdown in Melbourne\, Joe is bursting with new material\, has gone slightly stir crazy\, and will take his all new Live 25 show on a national tour to celebrate his quarter century of comedy. The new show is the pinnacle of his 25-year comedy career\, aptly titled Show Some Respect: 25 Live. \nFeaturing his unique brand of humour and sharp observations\, and over the course of almost 90 minutes\, Joe will honestly recount life as an ethnic Australian (or a wog kid as he prefers to call it)\, and now life as a husband and father to a newborn. Growing up in the 70s and 80s\, Joe’s view on how today’s generation of kids compares to his own experiences will have audiences of all ages and ethnicities in stitches.
