SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - A Hero (Ghahreman)
DESCRIPTION:Iran\, 2021\, 127 min. Directed by Asghar Farhadi\nModern Iranian Morality Tale \nNote – this is the 3rd\, not the 2nd\, Thursday in May.\nThe AGM will commence at 7.00 pm\, followed by the film at 7.30\n\nA-lister auteur Farhadi sets his latest film in the Iranian city of Shiraz. Ramin (Amir Jadidi) is in prison because of debt. During a 2-day leave\, he tries to convince his creditor (Mohsen Tanabandeh) to withdraw his claim against part of the payment\, but things don’t go according to plan.  A classic moral drama that demonstrates that money changes everything when many peoples’ interests clash within the public\, institutional and cultural milieu of a country like Iran where the intersection of cultural forces is inescapable.  Farhadi has been a consistent Iranian filmmaker who tackles contemporary Iranian social class and gender issues in a way that explores acutely Iranian problems. Winner of the Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix: 2021.

SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - Both Sides of the Blade
DESCRIPTION:France\, 2021\, 116 min.  Directed by Claire Denis\nScorching Love Triangle Drama \nCelebrated veteran film director\, Claire Denis developed and shot this film during different stages of Covid-19 lockdowns in France (as is reflected in some of the outdoor scenes). Juliette Binoche and Vincent Lindon play an apparently happy couple whose relationship is unsettled when Francois\, Sara’s ex-lover and Jean’s former friend\, suddenly reappears in their lives. The title Both Sides of the Blade comes from a song used in the film\, while the French title\, Avec amour et encharnement\, translates as Love and Fury – but it is also being distributed in English-language cinemas as Fire. The film bubbles with sexual tension and romantic ambivalence whilst simmering in the background are post-colonialist tensions and the continual sting of global economics\, themes that Denis continually interrogates in her work. This contemporary drama won the 2022 Berlin International Film Festival’s Silver Bear for Best Director and has been voted into Sight and Sound’s top 50 films for 2022.  A steamy complex film\, dancing around the danger of old flames.

SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - Brooklyn
DESCRIPTION:Ireland/UK/Canada\, 2015\, 112 min. Directed by John Crowley\nNostalgic Irish Émigré Romance\n\nReceiving a standing ovation at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and faithfully adapted from the novel by Colm Toibin\, Brooklyn tells the story of Eilis (Saoirse Ronan)\, a young woman from Enniscorthy\, County Wexford who finds herself in the new world of New York. Although big city excitement\, Italian charm and delicious food stir her love of life\, weddings and funerals call her back to Ireland where another phase of her life begins. Set in the 1950s\, Brooklyn harks back in style to the “women’s pictures” of the mid-20th century that were the backbone of popular cinema\, when stars like Bette Davis\, Joan Crawford and Barbara Stanwyck ruled the screen. It is largely a film about being torn between time\, place and identity: in America Eilis is a woman with a future\, yet in both worlds\, she is filled with longing and a sense of displacement. Also starring the fabulous Julie Walters\, Jim Broadbent\, Domhnall Gleeson and Fiona Glascott you will be won over by its low-key charm. \nThis film is presented in association with the Ballarat Irish Association.

SUMMARY:Ballarat Film Society - La Strada
DESCRIPTION:Italy\, 1954\, b/w\, 94 min.  Directed by Federico Fellini\nFellini Classic Neo-Realism \nStarring Giulietta Masina\, Anthony Quinn and Richard Basehart\, and produced by Dino De Laurentiis and Carlo Ponti\, La Strada was Fellini’s 4th film and ensured his international reputation. Told in a fabulist style with a focus on love and jealousies\, it is set in a circus featuring the brutish strongman Zampano (Quinn) and the plucky Gelsomina (Masina): brutish and innocent characters\, both with intense emotions and desires. Throughout his film-making career\, Fellini was fascinated by the tensions between a character’s theatrical façade and messy interior life. The film was controversial; however it has become one of the most influential films ever made. Confront Fellini’s 1950s sensibility\, the tragedy of circus life and the enthralling music of Nino Rata. La Strada won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film in 1957.

SUMMARY:Joe Avati | 25 Live - Have Some Respect Tour
DESCRIPTION:The comedian touted as Australia’s answer to Seinfeld is back with a brand new show for 2022 – and with most of us needing a good laugh after the events of the last two years\, his tour will be just the ticket.\nAfter surviving the world’s longest lockdown in Melbourne\, Joe is bursting with new material\, has gone slightly stir crazy\, and will take his all new Live 25 show on a national tour to celebrate his quarter century of comedy. The new show is the pinnacle of his 25-year comedy career\, aptly titled Show Some Respect: 25 Live. \nFeaturing his unique brand of humour and sharp observations\, and over the course of almost 90 minutes\, Joe will honestly recount life as an ethnic Australian (or a wog kid as he prefers to call it)\, and now life as a husband and father to a newborn. Growing up in the 70s and 80s\, Joe’s view on how today’s generation of kids compares to his own experiences will have audiences of all ages and ethnicities in stitches.

SUMMARY:Ballarat International Foto Biennale | Number One | Gudinski
DESCRIPTION:Image: Image: Brian Purnell\, Michael Gudinski\, Courtesy of Mushroom Creative House \nNumber One | Gudinski \n(currently open Thursday to Sunday | updated 13/10/21) \nThis element of the Ballarat International Foto Biennale will be held in the Basement of the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute. \nWe are thrilled to be a part of this wonderful event. \nAbout this installation \nIn celebration of Michael Gudinski’s legacy\, the Ballarat International Foto Biennale in partnership with Mushroom Group presents an exhibition of music photography. Through an Open Call\, music photographers were given the opportunity to submit photographs featuring artists under the Mushroom Group and Frontier Touring banner. Number One | Gudinski is an ode to Michael Gudinski\, whose passion for music was legendary. This exhibition celebrates his advocacy for the arts and lasting impact. \nOften referred to by those in the know as the Godfather of Aussie music\, Michael Gudinski is widely recognised as the most powerful and influential figure in the Australian music industry. As Chairman of Mushroom Group – the largest independent music and entertainment company in Australia and New Zealand\, home to Frontier Touring\, Chugg Entertainment\, eight record labels and over two dozen other specialist divisions – Gudinski’s clout was undeniable. The exhibition features photographs of Elton John\, Paul McCartney\, Vance Joy\, Courtney Barnett\, Troye Sivan and many more. \nAbout the Foto Beinnale \nThe Ballarat International Foto Biennale was founded in 2005 and attracts significant international and Australian photographers as one of Australia’s pre-eminent photographic festivals. It is a not-for-profit event that immerses the historic town of Ballarat in photographic art. \nNow in its 16th year\, the Ballarat International Foto Biennale has enriched the cultural landscape of regional Victoria\, becoming the most significant\, prestigious photographic arts festival in Australia. Held every two years we showcase work from domestic and international artists that is new\, previously unseen in Australia or contextualised afresh; and in our Open Program we foster the development of emerging artists. Alongside there are public programs and education programs comprising talks\, workshops and prizes which round out a rich and diverse cultural event that attracts more than 30\,000 people\, delivering significant economic and cultural impact. \nThe Ballarat International Foto Biennale is guided by the principle that it not only serves the community but also plays a vital role in cultivating it. \nThe Ballarat International Foto Biennale has attracted more than 200\,000 visitors to Ballarat and was honoured in 2018 at the Federation Business School and Commerce Ballarat Business Excellence Awards as the winner of the Visit Ballarat Events and Attractions Business Award. Its Founding Director\, Jeff Moorfoot OAM received an Order of Australia Medal for services to photography. \nWe are Australia’s leading photographic festival. We’ve done this by consistently finding new ways to engage audiences with photography\, responding to our audience’s needs\, their changing vision of art and culture\, and the role it plays in shaping Ballarat. We recognise and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people as the First Australians. Through photography\, we see our world reflected back in unexpected ways through the eyes of others: artists\, community and new perspectives. \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nBook now >

SUMMARY:The River Moorabool | Ballarat
DESCRIPTION:This film explains why this unique river\, travelling from the Wombat Forests near Ballarat to the Barwon River at Geelong\, is in trouble.\n\n\n“The River Moorabool” promotes alternative urban water supplies that would increase its flow and resilience in a changing climate. \nAbout 90% of the Moorabool’s natural flow is taken for human use. Dams in the upper catchment trap water for Geelong and Ballarat. More is trapped in farm dams\, so never makes the river. \nA lower stretch of the river near Geelong is concreted\, but this is badly broken\, so water soaks into the cement quarry for which the river’s course was twice shifted back in the 1900s. \nFurther downstream\, the river was turned into a concrete channel. The Moorabool’s flow often does not make it to the Barwon River. \nIn 2007-8\, the river stopped flowing because water behind the Bungal Dam was diverted to Ballarat rather than being allowed down the river. \nThe environmental flow is a small fraction of that extracted for human use. \n\n\nThe Moorabool’s health is suffering because of: \n\nThe increasing water use by Ballarat and Geelong\n\n\nIntensive farming activities\n\n\nThe spread of weeds along the river and its tributaries\n\n\n\nThe film discusses new sources of water for cities – such as recycling\, storm water reuse\, desalination – and rationalization of farm dams. \n\n\n“The river needs a more resilient and environmentally secure future with greater flows and improved catchment management\, including more riparian revegetation.” \n\n\nThe film presents interviews with a Wadawurrung man\, farmers\, scientists\, landcare proponents\, and river campaigners that explain the river’s history\, characteristics\, problems and possible solutions. The diversity of scenery along the river is a strong feature of the film. \n\n\nThe film was made by “People for A Living Moorabool” and “Sheoaks Films”. \nPeople for A Living Moorabool (PALM) formed during April 2008 in response to the dire condition of the Moorabool River. \nThe PALM Charter reads: \n“Our group unites those who want to keep the full length of the Moorabool River alive. This one idea of a ‘living Moorabool’ is our guiding principle. It means that our commitment to be a voice for the river will override any support for the rights of particular water users. We have a single focus – the right of this magnificent\, but highly stressed river\, to an effective environmental flow. We are motivated by the politics of unity not division.” \nPALM and the Geelong Landcare Network support each other in advocating for the Moorabool River and catchment management. \n\n\nThis event is being supported by the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute.
