The effective collection and treatment of organic waste is an issue that food manufacturers\, local councils\, agriculture operations and Governments currently face and must resolve if they are to meet the target of halving the amount of food waste entering landfill by 2030 (Victorian Government\, 2020). \nAnaerobic Digestion (AD) presents significant opportunity to address key challenges related to organic waste disposal and renewable energy generation for industry and communities\, and whilst it is a proven technology for producing renewable energy from organic waste streams overseas\, there are a number of barriers currently prevent it from being commercially viable in Australia. Go Cats!)\n\nReview of 25 August Session:\nCAD had its first discussion session on Thursday 25 August. \nSubject\, as advertised\, was “The (Dis) United States”. \nDiscussion ranged over personal experience and observations from time living in or visiting the USA and focused on three socially and politically divisive current issues: \n\nThe US Supreme Court’s recent decision over-turning constitutional rights to abortion (Roe v Wade in shorthand reference).\nRecurrent mass shootings in the USA and their context of cultural attitudes to gun ownership\, racial and geographic divisions and partisan political stances on gun reform.\nThe ongoing fall-out from the November 2020 Presidential election and 6 January 2021 Capitol riot. In this third issue\, the group ranged over the US electoral system\, conspiracy theories\, the prospect of a Trump or other “Trumpist” Republican Presidential victory in 2024\, whether Trump might be prosecuted or not – with pragmatic considerations of avoiding deeper division\, even the risk of civil war and collapse of democracy\, and strategic/economic implications for Australia\nof various alternative USA scenarios.\n\nWow! DESCRIPTION:History; The Ballarat Club & Trades Hall | Dr Phil Roberts OAM & Jenny Beacham\nBar open from 5.00pm | Talk starts at 5.30pm \nDr Phil Roberts OAM\nEducated in Melbourne\, during 1967-2002 was a secondary humanities teacher and Principal. In 1971 he taught in London and in 1984 Denver. Author of 21 books\, his Avenue of Memories\, won Victoria’s 2019 Premiers History Award. Currently\, he is BMI Patron. \nThe Ballaarat Club\, founded in 1872\, was an exclusive gentlemen’s club – membership was mainly lawyers\, bankers\, graziers and military personnel. Later\, the Club broadened its clientele to men of many occupations and interests and in 1997 women were first admitted. The Club’s history has many parallels with Ballarat’s history. \nThe Balllaarat Club 150th Year Anniversary Commemorative Book can be ordered here. \n\nOrder book\n \nDr Phil Roberts OAM\n\nJenny Beacham \nLocal history researcher\, with a look at one of Ballarat’s most storied institutions\, Trades Hall. \nThe History of Ballarat Trades and Labour\nCouncil 1854-2000 \nA unique product of the goldfields\, Ballarat Trades Hall participated in gaining the Eight Hour Day for Ballarat stonemasons in 1856\, building that substantial Trades Hall\, witnessing the emergence of their own James Scullin as Prime Minister and still remains -a battered but grand old tree. \nJenny Beacham – Born in the Mallee in 1938\, I gained a teaching studentship to Melbourne University in 1956. Now looking back\, aged 84\, some of the standouts are becoming the first elected female Secretary of the Victorian ALP\, being Lady Mayoress of the City of Melbourne\, working in South Africa inside the ANC in the 1994 election\, meeting Nelson Mandela\, and running the campaign of the first indigenous woman Carol Martin\, to be elected to any parliament in Australia. In the case of cybersecurity and privacy in the digital environment\,he truth lies between a proactive organisational and government environment and an equally proactive acceptance of personal responsibility and conduct. \nGeorge Fong\nDr Omaru Maruatona \nDr. Omaru Maruatona is a Ballarat resident and the CEO of Aiculus\, a technology company that specialises in cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence. Omaru has previously worked at PwC Australia in cybersecurity architecture and strategy; and before that as a Security Engineer at Computershare; and as an Artificial Intelligence researcher with Federation University prior to that. In addition to leading the Aiculus team\, Omaru is a mentor for an Australian business accelerator\, a member of the Singaporean central bank digital currency (CBDC) working group\, an advisor for a British venture capital company and a board director for the Buninyong community bank.
