SUMMARY:Meet the Author | A. J. Lyndon
DESCRIPTION:A. J. Lyndon\nI have a long standing interest in history\, particularly the English Civil Wars of the 17th century. In 2014 I started writing a novel about the “War Without an enemy” as it was described by an army commander in 1643. The Welsh Linnet was published in 2017. The sequel\, The Tawny Sash\, will be published on 30 May 2023. \nMy short stories have been published in a number of literary journals and anthologies. \nDespite being Australian I keep in regular contact with historical experts in the UK who patiently answer questions on every aspect of 17th century life on and off the battlefield. I am married with two children and a very spoiled dog. \nReviews of my debut novel The Welsh Linnet \n“stirring\, accurate accounts of the battles at Edgehill and Roundway Down.” \nHISTORICAL NOVEL SOCIETY \n“Captures the essence of the time. The story sweeps you along.” \nMICHAEL ARNOLD\, AUTHOR OF THE STRYKER CHRONICLES \n\n\nMore about the author\n \nThe Tawny Sash \nBook 2 in the War Without An Enemy series. Historical novel set in England 1644 during the English Civil War between King Charles I and the English Parliament. Sequel to ‘The Welsh Linnet‘. \nWelsh gentleman Gabriel Vaughan and his brother-in-law Will Lucie are on the run from the vengeful Sir Henry Lucie and the threat of a court martial. The two cavalry captains must clear their names before Sir Henry’s hired spy can find them. \nBut then Gabriel\, a follower of the outlawed Catholic faith\, becomes embroiled in religious infighting at King Charles I’s most important fortress\, Basing House and when a plot to betray the garrison is hatched\, Gabriel is implicated. \nCost $10 per person includes gst & light refreshments \n\nBook Here\n\n\nDownload Flyer\n\n\nWhy Not become a member\n\n\n \nThis event is a BMI Community Cultural Project – Ballarat’s Oldest Cultural Institution \n \n\nRosemary’s Book of the Week | 1 May 2023\n\nOutback by Patricia Wolf Rosemary’s Book of the Week Ds… \n\n \n\nMarion Snowdon | Twilight Talks | Military History: How do we remember?\n\nWednesday 10 May @ 5.30pm Learn from a curious observer… \n\n \n\nTwilight Talks | Join us this Wednesday\n\nJoin us this Wednesday for Twilight Talks | Music and… \n\n \n\nNewsletter – May 2023\n\nIn this issue learn about: Library New Releases & Recommended… \n\n\nLoad More

DESCRIPTION:Professor Barry Golding is speaking on his insights into the changing conservation and care of 6 peaks in Southern Dja Dja Wurrung Country.\nBunanyung Landscape Alliance is proud to present a FREE talk by Prof Barry Golding. \nA respect for landscape is built into our name. We recognise that landscapes change\, and that our perceptions of landscape are strongly contingent on culture. Professor Barry Golding is undertaking a State Library Victoria Fellowship in 2023. His project involves research and writing a book\, Six Peaks Speak: Unsettling changes in Southern Dja Dja Wurrung Country.\nProf Golding’s exploration of Aboriginal\, colonial and scientific responses to landscape in part of the Central Highlands will be of interest to all like-minded people. \nHis presentation is based on emerging insights from his wide-ranging research for the SLV Fellowship\, using ‘unsettling’ as an underpinning theme. His aim is to provide evidence-informed insights into the conservation of mountains in the landscape\, with the broader aim of making informed decisions about their care as important public places. \nThe six peaks of particular interest are today known as mounts Kooroocheang\, Beckworth\, Greenock\, Tarrengower\, Alexander and Franklin.\nBarry acknowledges the support of the State Library Victoria and Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation. \nWho is Barry Golding? \nBarry Golding AM has lived in Dja Dja Wurrung Country in Central Highlands Victoria most of his life. \nHe is an Honorary Professor with Federation University Australia in Ballarat\, has extensive research experience in vocational and adult learning and is widely published. SUMMARY:Past Truths/Bright Futures
DESCRIPTION:An evening of history and hope with local historian Dr Marguerita Stephens and local documentary film-maker James Freemantle.\nThe Years of Terror meticulously documents the struggle of the Kulin clans to hold Country as La Trobe unleashed ‘the terror of British law’ on them. \nBased on the journal of Assistant Protector William Thomas\, this work provides a new history of colonisation at Port Phillip Naarm\, bringing the focus to bear on those violently dispossessed of lands and waters\, theirs from time immemorial. \nBush to Belly is a 52 min documentary by James Freemantle\, with narration by Deborah Mailman. \nIt’s a gorgeous story. You’re going to love these kids doing great work up in the Kimberley!  Deborah Mailman \n7 Gooniyandi kids load their espresso machine in a 4-wheel drive and travel the Gibb River Road to make lattes\, cappuccinos and espressos for cyclists in some of Australia’s wildest terrain. But Bush to Belly is about more than coffee… \n…bulldust\, bikes and rich cultural exchange\, as a group of Indigenous kids shape their destinies. \nBush to Belly has been screened on ABC International and NITV. \n\n The Years of Terror\, Banbu-Deen: Kelin and Colonists at Prot Philip 1835-1851 | Marguerita Stephens with Fay Stewart-Muir\n\n Film-maker James Freemantle\, with Narrator\, Deborah Mailman.\n \n \n\n Dr Marguerita Stephens | Photo: Renee Price for Collins Booksellers on Lydiard\n \n \n Download Flyer\n \nBookings: This event is free bookings are essential. \n \n Bookings\n \nThis event has been organised in partnership with Collins Booksellers on Lydiard \n \n \nBMI news\n\n \n \n\nUnsettling: An insight into landscape change from Barry Golding\n\nProfessor Barry Golding is speaking on his insights into the… \n\n\n \n \n\nIn Conversation with Clare Fletcher\n\nBe sure to register for our next Library Event go… \n\n\n \n \n\nNight of Burlesque\, a big teaser | Ballarat Times by Edwina Williams\n\nA TASTER of the upcoming Australian Burlesque Festival is coming… \n\n\n \n \n\nWe want your vote | Music Victoria Awards | voting closes 12 noon 13 October\n\nMinerva Ballaarat has also been nominated for Best Regional Live… \n\n \n Load More

SUMMARY:Dervla McTiernan: What Happened to Nina?
DESCRIPTION:Internationally bestselling author Dervla McTiernan comes to Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute to discuss her suspenseful new novel about two families at war.   \nWhat Happened to Nina?\nby Dervla McTiernan\nNina and Simon are the perfect couple. Young\, fun and deeply in love. Until they leave for a weekend at his family’s cabin in Vermont\, and only Simon comes home. \nWhat happened to Nina? \nNobody knows. Simon’s explanation about what happened in their last hours together doesn’t add up. Nina’s parents push the police for answers\, and Simon’s parents rush to protect him. They hire expensive lawyers and a PR firm that quickly ramps up a vicious\, nothing-is-off-limits media campaign. \nHow far will his family go to keep him safe? \nSoon\, facts are lost in a swirl of accusation and counter-accusation. Everyone chooses a side\, and the story goes viral\, fueled by armchair investigators and wild conspiracy theories and illustrated with pretty pictures taken from Nina’s social media accounts. Journalists descend on their small Vermont town\, followed by a few obsessive “fans.” \nHow far will her family go to get to the truth? \nNina’s family is under siege\, but they never lose sight of the only thing that really matters — finding their daughter. Out-gunned by Simon’s wealthy\, powerful family\, Nina’s parents recognize that if playing by the rules won’t get them anywhere\, it’s time to break them. \n \nAbout Dervla \nDervla McTiernan is the critically acclaimed author of five novels\, including The Murder Rule\, which was a New York Times thriller of the year. SUMMARY:Exhibition | Not the Last Picture Show
DESCRIPTION:May 17\n@\n10:30 am\n–\nMay 30\n@\n4:00 pm \nFree \nMH 94 Coliseum Grenville Street\, Ballarat\nJust a year after the Lumière brothers invented the cinematograph in 1895\, the first screenings of this new technology of ‘moving pictures’ were held at the Mechanics’ Institute. \nBy the 1970’s\, cinema’s death was being heralded after the devastating impact of television and the attraction of the drive-in\, making the BMI’s Vegas 70 for a brief time Ballarat’s only indoor cinema. \nOur latest photographic exhibition Not the Last Picture Show traces the history of cinemas in Ballarat\, from the spectacular nitrate film-fuelled conflagration of the 4\,000 seat Coliseum Picture Palace\, now a supermarket car park\, to the Skyline Drive-in\, now a housing estate with a ‘Bogart Avenue’. \nThe exhibition will be held in the Williamson Foyer space\, which formerly hosted the candy bar of the cinema\, with an additional exhibition in our beautiful Heritage Reading Room. \nEntry by $5 donation to the Heritage Reading Room (BMI members free). \nThis event is part of the Ballarat Heritage Festival \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \nThis event takes place on Wadawurrung Country. Through live and digital conversations\, debates\, readings\, performances and discussions\, it deepens public engagement with the most pressing topics of the day. It is dedicated to creative collaboration\, community engagement\, diversity\, and innovation. \nMelbourne was designated a UNESCO City of Literature in 2008 and this heralded the establishment of the Centre for Books\, Writing and Ideas – a vibrant new hub for a diverse range of organisations focussed on literature and ideas. The aim: to provide a home and important focal point for the conversations that matter to Victoria\, and indeed\, Australia. As the Centre itself took its physical shape within a newly renovated and dedicated wing of the State Library of Victoria\, our position was secured ahead of the official opening with the commitment of our patrons\, Maureen and Tony Wheeler of Lonely Planet. From that day\, the Centre for Books\, Writing and Ideas became The Wheeler Centre. \nSince 2009\, The Wheeler Centre has been firmly established at the heart of Victoria’s rich cultural life. Based in the Melbourne CBD on Little Lonsdale St\, the Centre is also a hub and home for writers and key literary organisations\, including the Melbourne Writers Festival\, Writers Victoria\, Express Media\, Emerging Writers’ Festival and Australian Poetry. \nThis event will be supported by Collins Booksellers on Lydiard \n\n \nThis event takes place on Wadawurrung Country.
