SUMMARY:Current Affairs Dialogue | Discussion Group | NOW POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:Last months Summary:\nThree members met at the BMI on Thursday 29 September at 1.30 – 3.00 pm for the scheduled CAD session. \nSeveral apologies received. Subject was the Ukraine situation. \nAnother stimulating discussion. It covered the centuries-old background to the current Russia-Ukraine conflict\, rooted as it is in break-up of past empires\, various peace treaties\, often contested and frequently shifting borders in Central Europe\, ethnic and religious rivalries and struggles to retain or take-over fertile territory and strategic sea channels. ( Ballarat’s legacy district names like Sebastopol\, Redan and many street names from the mid 1850s Crimean War were noted in this connection). \nThe claims and counter-claims for the current conflict to be seen as a Russian invasion\, a defence against NATO encroachment\, an economic war\, a patriotic war\, a nationalistic war and its potential to turn into a nuclear were discussed as were the conflict’s potential longer-term and wider effects on leadership\, food supply\, driving changes in reliance on fossil fuel energy as oil & gas supplies are used as bargaining chips\, a retreat from globalisation as supply chains are threatened – all this and much more. You don’t know what you are missing! \nThe Process:\n1pm for 1.30pm start \nInterested in current affairs? Welcome to a new initiative at the BMI designed for you. \nCurrent Affairs Dialogue (CAD) at the BMI: \nCAD will launch in The Reading Room 1-3 pm on Thursday 28 July 2022. CAD at the BMI is designed for members and friends who are interested in joining with similarly interested people as listeners and contributors  in respectful\, informed\, analytic and interpretive  conversations  on issues of significant current public interest. The goal is to have all participants enjoy stimulating discussion and to leave CAD at the BMI sessions feeling their horizons have been extended and their understanding of current affairs deepened. \nDates\, place & format: A light-touch\, flexible structure is proposed to launch the initiative. Program and practice  will evolve in line with participant consensus. Meetings will be in the Reading Room. We will start meetings with a cuppa   and welcome/introduction of new participants.  Intention is to meet on the last THURSDAY of each month  February through November. Topics will be nominated by agreement of participants a month ahead. Participants will be encouraged to identify  insightful written and spoken media pieces that they encounter pertinent to the coming sessions  topic\, to reference or share these pieces with other participants in advance of the next meeting where appropriate  – in other words\, do some purposeful and\, hopefully\, stimulating reading\, listening and thinking before each meeting. Subject to participants’ agreement\, contact details will be shared. Mark Potter\, BMI Cultural Development & Services Manager will provide communications assistance and follow-up. Frank Hurley\, former President and Patron of the BMI will act as convenor/ facilitator for the first few meetings. The idea is that this role be rotated among participants as CAD at the BMI finds its feet. Some sample current issues to set us thinking…Below is a selection of substantial\, wide-ranging  current issues  some or all of which  might be a meeting focus over coming months. Indicatively\, the discussion framework for a  topic would  be to look at and discuss ( order depending on the topic) Discussion framework: \n\nhow did the issue arise\, what are its roots/background/history\,\nwhat is the situation as it stands\,\nhow might it unfold/ effect change in its own\, locale\, at national and global levels.; what significance for us.\n\nSuggested topics: \n\nThe troubled (Dis)United States: Roe V Wade overturn\, guns\, continuing fall-out from 6 January 2021 Capitol riot. ( N.B. It is proposed to make this the topic to get us started at the first meeting on Thursday 28 July)\nRussia’s ongoing military attack on Ukraine\nThe pervasive “Culture “ problem: bad behaviour in Parliament House\, football clubs\, corporations like Crown and Star Casinos \, banks etc. etc.\nCensus 2021: What has changed ? Will keep changing? Advance Australia Where?\nProblems and possibilities of our town: Bakery Hill/Bridge Mall proposals\, hollowing out of the CBD\, Fed Uni’s  announced vacating of Lydiard/Camp St buildings complex\, all those Council “strategy” plans\nYour suggestions?\n\nIf this outline engages your interest\, come along. Help make this initiative a success. Spread the word among  friends you think would be interested. Looking forward to a good representation BMI members and supporters gathering in The Reading Room for the inaugural CAD at the BMI on Thursday 28 July at 1 p.m.  Enquires to:Mark Potter at the BMI on most Wednesdays and Thursdays. SUMMARY:In conversation with Fleur McDonald
DESCRIPTION:Having sold over 700\,000 copies of her books\, Fleur has solidified her position as one of the country’s favourite storytellers. \nAustralia’s leading rural literature author\, Fleur’s books become best sellers almost as quickly as they hit the shelves. Her story lines are drawn from inspiration from having lived and worked for much of her life on farms. Loving the rural life style Fleur now owns 4050ha across rural Western Australia. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to hear about her new book Broad River Station in conversation with local ABC journalist Lexie Jeuniewic (More about Lexie >) \nBooks will be available for purchase\, courtesy Collins Booksellers Ballarat on Lydiard and Fleur will be available for book signings. Fleur is brought to us courtesy Allen & Unwin Book Publishers. (Image: Dan Paris) \nBookings are essential | Tickets ar $10 per person \n\n \n\n \nBroad River Station | Fleur McDonald\nFollow Fleur \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nMia\, a newly graduated constable\, on her first post is assigned to Broad River\, a small country town. And as certain as she is about her ability to do the job\, on day one she’s already in conflict with colleagues who believe that women shouldn’t be coppers. \nIt takes the shine off coming home\, where her grandmother\, Clara\, is in the early stages of dementia. Clara is in a nursing home\, living between her present and the mist-covered past of her life as dementia slowly steals her memories. Mia is accustomed to their conversations often not quite making sense but when Clara hints at veiled family secrets\, Mia isn’t sure what she should believe. \nLexie Jeuniewic\nFollow Lexie \n  \nLexie Jeuniewic is a reporter for ABC Ballarat\, covering radio\, digital\, and television. \nShe previously worked as a senior reporter for 9News Sunshine Coast and as a video journalist for 9News Border North-East\, based in Shepparton. \nA former rower\, she continues to enjoy the exploring great outdoors and loves curling up with a great book and cup of tea on a chilly Ballarat afternoon! \n\nTickets\n\n\nDownload Flyer\n\n\nWhy Not become a member\n\n\n \nThis event is a BMI Community Cultural Project – Ballarat’s Oldest Cultural Institution

SUMMARY:Meet the Author | Once Were Wild by Leslie Scott
DESCRIPTION:About Once Were Wild: \nWhen local Clunes resident Leslie Scott discovers two brumbies living on the rugged Mount Beckworth\, she almost can’t believe it. Brumbies don’t live in Central Victoria\, and the terrain is not suited to them\, so how did they get there? \nThe horses are scared and unused to people\, but the mountain is not a safe place for horses. With summer heat on its way\, the waterholes are drying up and food is getting scarce – and local rumour has it that logging is soon to begin. Looking into the eyes of the young colt she names Milo\, Leslie knows it’s up to her to gain their trust and get them down to safety. \n‘Every day for months Leslie makes the hike up the mountain\, slowly but surely building a connection with Milo and his companion Lucy\, but there are other mysterious things happening up there – bones being rearranged into different shapes – and always the question: who left the horses here in the first place? \nOnce Were Wild is a fascinating and heart-warming story about a woman and her resourcefulness and determination to do what’s right for two beautiful brumbies. \nBookings are essential | Tickets ar $10 per person \n\n \n\n \nOnce Were Wild | Leslie Scott\n \nAbout Leslie\nLeslie Scott’s love for horses and the bush began when she got her first pony at age 6. Her father\, an experienced bushman taught her to listen\, appreciate and be able to read the bush. When Leslie can’t get to the high country\, she immerses herself in the rugged terrain of Mt Beckworth\, a nature reserve seven minutes from her front gate. Leslie lives on a small property with her husband in historical Clunes\, rural Victoria. They have a menagerie of animals. In her spare time she’s either riding her horses in the bush or hiking through it with her dog. For Leslie the bush is not just a place to visit – it’s her home. \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\nDownload Flyer\n\n\nWhy Not become a member\n\n\n \nThis event is a BMI Community Cultural Project – Ballarat’s Oldest Cultural Institution

SUMMARY:Book Launch | Look Back on Languor: The memoir of a hurkle-durkle Australian male
DESCRIPTION:Dr Frank Hurley OAM is well-known and highly respected in the Ballarat community\, nowhere more so than in BMI circles has written a memoir titled Look Back on Languor: The memoir of a hurkle-durkle Australian male. The book will be launched at the BMI\, in the Humffray Room\, at 5.00 – 6.30 p.m. on Friday 14 April by The Hon. Steve Bracks\, AC. \n \nFrank reckons that the old Scots phrase “hurkle durkle”\,  meaning “to lie in bed\, or lounge\, long after it is time to get up”  sums him up well. \nFrank served on the BMI Committee for over 30 years till retiring in 2013. He was then BMI Patron for a further five years. He served numerous terms as President and as Secretary. He played a leading role in the restoration and revitalisation of the BMI in the ten or so years from 2000. \nIn other spheres\, Frank was deeply involved\, as a senior academic for 25 years\, in the evolution of the University of Ballarat (now Federation University) and in the establishment of the University’s Arts Academy city campus in the complex of former government buildings on Camp/Lydiard Streets. \nFrank lived some of his boyhood years in Howitt St\, Wendouree. He attended St. Columba’s Primary School and St Patrick’s College before moving to Melbourne in 1952. With his wife Helen and their four daughters\, he returned for a “second coming in Ballarat”\, as his memoir terms it\, in 1974. Over the 40 years since\, he has been a prominent participant in social\, political\, cultural and educational affairs as a media commentator\, writer\, speaker and member of a wide range of committees and organisations. \nWith insight\, candour and wit\, in this memoir Frank recounts and reflects on his experiences\, his beliefs\, values and the changing times of his life. \n \nThe book will be available for sale at the launch and after at the BMI library\, with 10% of all sales going to the BMI. \nThe launch event will follow the pattern of BMI talks. Light refreshments will be available and the bar will be open for purchase of drinks. SUMMARY:Meet the Author | Olivia Wearne & Elizabeth Coleman
DESCRIPTION:The Woman Who Knew Too Little by Olivia Wearne \nA Routine Infidelity by Elizabeth Coleman\nTHE similarities keep coming for two local authors who discovered they recently published their latest works a couple of days apart from each other. \nNow Elizabeth Coleman and Olivia Wearne have become fast friends following the release of their second novels. \nBoth crime fiction books\, Coleman’s is titled A Routine Infidelity and Wearne’s The Woman Who Knew Too Little. \n“I got an email from my agent saying there was another author in Ballarat whose story was very similar to mine and asked if I wanted to meet her\,” Coleman said. \n“We met for coffee and she said ‘my second book’s coming out’ and I said my second book’s coming out! \n“Her book has a female detective. My book has a female detective. It was uncanny\, so we thought we would join forces and get ourselves out there through these remarkable coincidences.” \nBoth screenwriters by trade\, Wearne moved to Ballarat and started writing professionally 15 years ago while Coleman has been crafting words for 30 years and relocated to the region in the last half-decade. \nColeman said the pair’s shared screenwriting influences is a prominent factor in both their styles. \n“Another similarity we share is that our screen experiences have really helped us with story structure\,” she said. \n“Both our stories kind of move along quickly because we’ve had to work to commercial breaks and things like that.” \nColeman said it’s important for Australian creatives to support each other. \n“It’s such a small industry here\, anything creative\,” she said.” We’re competing with enormous overseas giants. \n“It’s very important we all support each other and lift each other up.” \nSource: Ballarat Times : 8 March 2023 by Tim Bottams. \nhttps://timesnewsgroup.com.au/ballarat/print-editions/full-digital-edition-3-march-2/ \n\n\nMore about the author\n \n1948. An unidentified dead man is found on Somerton Beach\, Adelaide. Officer Kitty Wheeler yearns to work the case – but the city’s women police are typically assigned to more domestic matters. A wryly funny\, sharply observed novel about one of Australia’s great mysteries\, and the life choices available to mid-century women. \nDecember\, 1948. Officer Kitty Wheeler is a member of the Women Police\, responsible for ‘upholding the moral virtue’ of Adelaide’s at times unruly and amorous citizens. Patrolling Somerton beach one night\, Kitty and her partner spot a man leaning against the sea wall\, apparently drunk. It’s late\, they’re tired\, and they leave him to sleep it off … \nThe man is dead\, his identity unknown\, and Kitty has missed a career-making opportunity. In the following months\, the case of the Somerton Man grips first Adelaide\, then Australia\, as bizarre clues point towards international espionage\, Eastern mysticism or salacious scandal. Kitty\, preoccupied with the case\, joins the investigation wherever she can\, although the men are firmly in charge. Meanwhile\, she must decide whether she wants husband and family\, or a career – in 1940s Australia\, she can’t have both. Her boyfriend Peter wants to pop the question\, but Kitty is keener on solving the case … \nOlivia Wearne has threaded Kitty’s story into the real-life 1940s mystery of the Somerton Man. This intriguing\, sharply observed and wholly engaging novel explores the life and crimes of a city and its people\, few of whom are without their secrets. \nAbout the Author \nOlivia Wearne began her writing career as a screenwriter and has several film credits to her name. After receiving a Masters in creative writing she went on to write The Grand Tour\, which was published in 2020. Born and raised in Melbourne\, Olivia now resides in Ballarat\, Victoria\, with her filmmaker husband and two sons. \n\n\nMore about the author\n \nA delightfully sharp and clever murder mystery\, perfect for fans of Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club. \nSynopsis: \nPrivate investigator Edwina ‘Ted’ Bristol deals in the cheating husbands and missing chihuahuas of Melbourne\, but yearns for the heart-stopping excitement of real crime. When \nWhen Ted discovers her sister Bob has fallen prey to an internet catfishing scam\, she sets out with her beloved miniature schnauzer and shrewd sidekick\, Miss Marple\, to catch the swindler. Meanwhile\, when conducting routine surveillance on a couple suspected of having an affair\, she uncovers a plot to embezzle millions. \nAs Bob’s case takes a series of bizarre twists and turns and the embezzlement escalates into murder\, Ted finds her own life in peril. Will she crack her first criminal case before it’s too late? \nPraise for A Routine Infidelity: \nClever plotting\, memorable characters – a delight! \nKerry Greenwood\nAuthor of the Phryne Fisher Murder Mysteries \nWith Miss Marple as your sidekick how can you lose? Recruits were schooled in Morse Code and gunnery prior to assignment to fighter\, bomber or coastal squadrons. \nOver 6000 young men passed through the 58 courses held between 1940 and 1945. Of these young men\, nearly 1200 were killed. Members of the Air Force Association Ballarat have researched 1WAGS extensively. A visual memorial has been created at the old Officers’ Mess in Hut 48 at the airport and the 1WAGS website\ndetailing the history of the school and the lives of many of the trainees has had over 80\,000 hits. \nMarion Snowdon\nResearcher into military memorials:\nMarion says that she is a curious observer. As a retired teacher she now enjoys the luxury of time to visit communities\, near and far. Cemetery rambles are a favourite with visits to memorials a close second. Through living and travelling with her husband Garry – passionate amateur World War One historian – Marion’s eyes have been opened to the multitude of ways that communities remember and pay tribute to those who have served and sacrificed. She appreciates the opportunity to share some of her photographs with others. \nMarion Snowdon\nCost & Bookings | $8 per person BMI members | $12 per person regular \nInformation on the full series  \n\nFull Series\n \nBook places \n\nBook Places\n \n\n \n\nRepetiteur Stacey Yang will support her Melba Opera Trust colleagues on 4 June at the BMI\n\nA repetiteur is one of the driving forces behind the… \n\n\n \n\nBMI Special Programs\, Ballart Heritage Festival | The Heritage Collection\n\nWhy not check out the special programs that we will… \n\n\n \n\nRosemary’s Book of the Week | 1 May 2023\n\nOutback by Patricia Wolf Rosemary’s Book of the Week Ds… \n\n\n \n\nMarion Snowdon | Twilight Talks | Military History: How do we remember?\n\nWednesday 10 May @ 5.30pm Learn from a curious observer… \n\n\nLoad More
