SUMMARY:The Reading Room | 31 May
DESCRIPTION:The Reading Room (2pm in the Library for a start @ 10.30am – 12noon) \nThis volunteer run reading and discussion group meets monthly. It is anticipated that members will read the selected book prior to attendance. If you would like to be a part of this group (free to BMI members) please complete the Expression of Interest. We welcome your feedback through this form as we progress this great new initiative. \nExpression of Interest to participate >\nFor more information go to\n\n \nCaleb’s Crossing | Geraldine Brooks\nMAY SESSION \nCaleb’s Crossing | Geraldine Brooks \nIn 1665\, a young man from Martha’s Vineyard became the first Native American to graduate from Harvard College. From the few facts that survive of his extraordinary life\, Geraldine Brooks creates a luminous tale of love and faith\, magic and adventure. \nWhen Bethia Mayfield\, a spirited twelve-year-old living in the rigid confines of an English Puritan settlement – and the daughter of a Calvinist minister – meets Caleb\, the young son of a Wampanoag chieftain\, the two forge a secret friendship that draws each into the alien world of the other. \nAs Bethia’s father feels called to convert the Wampanoag to his own strict faith\, he awakens the wrath of the medicine men. Caleb becomes a prize in a contest between old ways and new\, eventually taking his place at Harvard\, studying Latin and Greek alongside the sons of the colonial elite. \nFighting for a voice in a society that requires her silence\, Bethia becomes entangled in Caleb’s struggle to navigate the intellectual and cultural shoals that divide their two cultures. \nOnce again\, Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Geraldine Brooks brings to vivid life a shard of little-known history\, and through Bethia and Caleb explores the intimate spaces of the human heart. \nreleased and reunited with his daughter in England. There the lives of two very different men\, Charles Darnay\, an exiled French aristocrat\, and Sydney Carton\, a disreputable but brilliant English lawyer\, become enmeshed through their love for Lucie Manette. From the tranquil lanes of London\, they are drawn against their will to the vengeful\, bloodstained streets of Paris at the height of the Reign of Terror\, and they soon fall under the lethal shadow of La Guillotine. \nReview a title \nWhy not review a book for the benefit of our members. We will publish these reviews in our social media and website from time to time. \n\nMy Book Review >\n \nThis event is a BMI Community Art Project – Ballarat’s Oldest Cultural Institution

SUMMARY:Painting with Geoff Roderick | 8 June 22 | Now fully booked
DESCRIPTION:Image: Seville Oranges (detail) | Geoff Roderick \nA workshop in painting basics.\nIn these sessions Geoff will be using water based artists quality Gouache (poster paint). Geoff sites five reasons for choosing this medium to teach. \n\nIt is opaque\, (unlike watercolour which is transparent) this means freedom of expression as it’s easy to cover any marks not needed or wish to change. The tube colours are mixed with each other and white to create shades and tones (as  in oil painting) these exercises could lead a student on to other mediums such as oils or acrylics.\nIt’s very quick drying. It is generally used on paper. It can be painted over immediately with other colours. It dries to a matt finish.\nIt can be applied in different thicknesses over and over each colour\, making it easier to learn and experiment with colours\, shapes and composition.\nBeing water based\, cleaning of brushes and any spills or drips on clothes will wash out easily.\nHe has had 40 years experience with this beautiful painting medium.\n\nWhat Geoff will supply \nFor initial classes he will supply: \n\nplastic palate\,\nbrush\,\nprepared paper A4 size\nand\, Primary colours and white Gouache paints.\nHe will also provide water glasses and rags for cleaning brushes.\n\nWhat you will learn \nWe propose to set up a simple still life for the students to learn the elements of painting ie. \n\nColour\nTone\nTemperature\nIntensity\nShape & Texture\n\nFour part series\nThe series of workshops will be structured to suit each attendees standard. SUMMARY:Wendy McCarthy: Don’t Be Too Polite\, Girls
DESCRIPTION:Wendy McCarthy has been a trailblazer in the feminist movement in Australia for over 50 years. At this in-conversation event\, she’ll discuss her tireless spirit for activism and change\, as recounted in her new book Don’t Be Too Polite Girls.\nMcCarthy’s inspiring memoir is filled with cautionary tales and insider stories about her experiences as an outspoken advocate for women’s rights in Australia since the 1960s. Throughout her extraordinary career\, she has smashed the glass ceiling again and again and forged a path for subsequent generations of women. Throughout it all\, McCarthy has remained a country girl at heart\, and at this event\, McCarthy will appear at Ballaarat Mechanics Institute in conversation with young feminist activist Tierney Khan\, for an intergenerational discussion about the importance of finding your own voice and listening to it. \nThis event will be Auslan interpreted. \nThe bookseller for this event is Collins Booksellers on Lydiard \nPresented in partnership The Wheeler Centre

Some are recent\, like Harry Potter; some ancient\, like Homer and Lao Tzu. There are memoirs (Nelson Mandela)\, poetry (Les Murray) and many of the world’s great novels\, from George Eliot’s Middlemarch to Toni Morrison’s Beloved. Our guide\, in entertaining short essays about personal encounters with each of these works\, is Michael McGirr- schoolteacher and former priest\, reviewer of hundreds of novels and lifelong lover of literature. \nHis humour and insight shine through in stories that connect the texts he has selected with each other\, and connect us to them. Never prescriptive\, and often very funny\, this book is an invitation to reflect on-and share with others-the extraordinary gift of reading. ‘It is a gift that is taking me a lifetime to unwrap\,? McGirr writes. ‘The excitement has never worn off.? \nAbout the Author \nMichael McGirr is the bestselling author of Snooze- The Lost Art of Sleep\, Things You Get for Free and Bypass. He has reviewed almost one thousand books for various newspapers; his short fiction has appeared in Australian and overseas publications; and he has been a publisher of Eureka Street and fiction editor at Meanjin. \nReview a title \nWhy not review a book for the benefit of our members. SUMMARY:Current Affairs Dialogue | Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:1pm for 1.30pm start \nInterested in current affairs? Welcome to a new initiative at the BMI designed for you. \nCurrent Affairs Dialogue (CAD) at the BMI: \nCAD will launch in The Reading Room 1-3 pm on Thursday 28 July 2022. CAD at the BMI is designed for members and friends who are interested in joining with similarly interested people as listeners and contributors  in respectful\, informed\, analytic and interpretive  conversations  on issues of significant current public interest. The goal is to have all participants enjoy stimulating discussion and to leave CAD at the BMI sessions feeling their horizons have been extended and their understanding of current affairs deepened.  \nDates\, place & format: A light-touch\, flexible structure is proposed to launch the initiative. Program and practice  will evolve in line with participant consensus. Meetings will be in the Reading Room. We will start meetings with a cuppa   and welcome/introduction of new participants.  Intention is to meet on the last THURSDAY of each month  February through November. Topics will be nominated by agreement of participants a month ahead. Participants will be encouraged to identify  insightful written and spoken media pieces that they encounter pertinent to the coming sessions  topic\, to reference or share these pieces with other participants in advance of the next meeting where appropriate  – in other words\, do some purposeful and\, hopefully\, stimulating reading\, listening and thinking before each meeting. Subject to participants’ agreement\, contact details will be shared. Mark Potter\, BMI Cultural Development & Services Manager will provide communications assistance and follow-up. Frank Hurley\, former President and Patron of the BMI will act as convenor/ facilitator for the first few meetings. The idea is that this role be rotated among participants as CAD at the BMI finds its feet. Some sample current issues to set us thinking… Below is a selection of substantial\, wide-ranging  current issues  some or all of which  might be a meeting focus over coming months. Indicatively\, the discussion framework for a  topic would  be to look at and discuss ( order depending on the topic) Discussion framework: \n\nhow did the issue arise\, what are its roots/background/history\,\nwhat is the situation as it stands\,\nhow might it unfold/ effect change in its own\, locale\, at national and global levels.; what significance for us.\n\n Suggested topics: \n\nThe troubled (Dis)United States: Roe V Wade overturn\, guns\, continuing fall-out from 6 January 2021 Capitol riot. ( N.B. It is proposed to make this the topic to get us started at the first meeting on Thursday 28 July) \nRussia’s ongoing military attack on Ukraine\nThe pervasive “Culture “ problem: bad behaviour in Parliament House\, football clubs\, corporations like Crown and Star Casinos \, banks etc. etc.\nCensus 2021: What has changed ? Will keep changing? Advance Australia Where?\nProblems and possibilities of our town: Bakery Hill/Bridge Mall proposals\, hollowing out of the CBD\, Fed Uni’s  announced vacating of Lydiard/Camp St buildings complex\, all those Council “strategy” plans\nYour suggestions?\n\nIf this outline engages your interest\, come along. Help make this initiative a success. Spread the word among  friends you think would be interested. Looking forward to a good representation BMI members and supporters gathering in The Reading Room for the inaugural CAD at the BMI on Thursday 28 July at 1 p.m.  Enquires to:Mark Potter at the BMI on most Wednesdays and Thursdays. SUMMARY:Current Affairs Dialogue | Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:NEXT CAD: Thursday 25 August 1.30 – 3.00 p.m. Heritage Reading Room\nTopic: The USA: what’s the state of the union and why? Three core issues are suggested toframe discussion: \n\nMass shootings and the gun culture;\nDivision around the Supreme Court overturning the Roe v Wade ruling on abortion;\nThe ongoing fall-out from the contested 2020 Presidential election.\n\n1pm for 1.30pm start \nInterested in current affairs? Tel: 0439 141722; email: mark@ballaratmi.org.au or complete the Expression of Interest below. \n  \n \n Expression of interest\n \n\nThis event is a BMI Community Cultural Project – Ballarat’s Oldest Cultural Institution

SUMMARY:Twilight Talks 2022 | Season 2 | Session 4
DESCRIPTION:Innovators:\nUncovering some of Ballarat’s best minds.\nSession 4\nBallarat industry: At the cutting edge of world of research & development.\nBallarat: Old\, gold and cold? Or a thriving liveable city of the future?\nDo we deserve a new motto? Should our reputation remain in the past? Or should we embrace the vision of Ballarat being one of the world’s most sustainable and regenerative cities? What legacy should we leave for future generations? What do we really value? This presentation will consider these thought-provoking prompts and aims to provide some realistic responses and innovative insights. \n Talina Edwards is an internationally-recognised and award-winning sustainability leader in the built-environment profession. She runs a small carbon-neutral practice in Wadawurrung Country (Ballarat) with a team of five passionate women. Core values are to create healthy\, beautiful\, functional\, comfortable and sustainable architecture which combines building-science and biophilic-design to respond to our purpose to care for Country and cultivate a living future for all. \nTalina is a registered Architect and Certified Passive House Designer and is currently undertaking the Living Future Accreditation course to engage more deeply in a regenerative-design ethos. \nShe is a passionate advocate for building a better future together\, with roles at the Australian Passive House Association (APHA Deputy Chair)\, ArchiTeam CoOperative Advocacy Committee\, Australian Architects Declare movement and more.\nShe lives with her partner and their two sons and cares deeply about the legacy we are leaving our future generations. \n\n\n \nLuke Brennan \n“Food and other organic waste in landfill is one of the key contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in Australia\, with the emissions related to fossil fuels being another major factor. The effective collection and treatment of organic waste is an issue that food manufacturers\, local councils\, agriculture operations and Governments currently face and must resolve if they are to meet the target of halving the amount of food waste entering landfill by 2030 (Victorian Government\, 2020). \nAnaerobic Digestion (AD) presents significant opportunity to address key challenges related to organic waste disposal and renewable energy generation for industry and communities\, and whilst it is a proven technology for producing renewable energy from organic waste streams overseas\, there are a number of barriers currently prevent it from being commercially viable in Australia. Gaia EnviroTech (the bioenergy division of Gekko Systems) is addressing these barriers through providing environmentally sustainable and scalable solutions for organic waste disposal with their modular and scalable multi-stage Anaerobic Biodigester and the Rapid Composter systems.” \nGaia Enviro\, The Ballarat company getting ahead of the bio-energy future. \nLuke Brennan\nSeries Artwork: \nGlass Plate\, Henry Sutton\, Colour Photograph\, 1890s\nCourtesy Federation University Australia Historical Collection. \n\n \nThe session will take place in the Humffray Room\, Level 4\, though this will depend on final numbers. \nBar open from 5.00pm | Talk starts at 5.30pm \n\nDownload flyer\n \nTickets | Session Cost\nThe session cost is $12 per person | $10 per person for BMI members. \n\nBook Tickets\n \nArtwork Plate Viewer: \nDon’t miss seeing the ‘viewer’ that Henry Sutton created the image that the series artwork is based on. SUMMARY:Current Affairs Dialogue | Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:NEXT CAD:\n\nSubject will be “Russia’s War on Ukraine: Whys\, Wherefores and Global Implications”. Keep it in mind in your viewing\, listening and reading over the next few weeks. Come along and contribute; leave more aware and thoughtful.\n(Hey\, Thursday 29th is just four days after THE major current affair of September\, the Grand Final!! We might spare 5 minutes to discuss Geelong’s premiership win. Go Cats!)\n\nReview of 25 August Session:\nCAD had its first discussion session on Thursday 25 August. \nSubject\, as advertised\, was “The (Dis) United States”. \nDiscussion ranged over personal experience and observations from time living in or visiting the USA and focused on three socially and politically divisive current issues: \n\nThe US Supreme Court’s recent decision over-turning constitutional rights to abortion (Roe v Wade in shorthand reference).\nRecurrent mass shootings in the USA and their context of cultural attitudes to gun ownership\, racial and geographic divisions and partisan political stances on gun reform.\nThe ongoing fall-out from the November 2020 Presidential election and 6 January 2021 Capitol riot. In this third issue\, the group ranged over the US electoral system\, conspiracy theories\, the prospect of a Trump or other “Trumpist” Republican Presidential victory in 2024\, whether Trump might be prosecuted or not – with pragmatic considerations of avoiding deeper division\, even the risk of civil war and collapse of democracy\, and strategic/economic implications for Australia\nof various alternative USA scenarios.\n\nWow! All that in 90 minutes. Bet you wish you were there! Too late\, but look on the bright side – you can be at the next monthly CAD session. \nThe Process:\n1pm for 1.30pm start \nInterested in current affairs? Some sample current issues to set us thinking…Below is a selection of substantial\, wide-ranging  current issues  some or all of which  might be a meeting focus over coming months. Indicatively\, the discussion framework for a  topic would  be to look at and discuss ( order depending on the topic) Discussion framework: \n\nhow did the issue arise\, what are its roots/background/history\,\nwhat is the situation as it stands\,\nhow might it unfold/ effect change in its own\, locale\, at national and global levels.; what significance for us.\n\nSuggested topics: \n\nThe troubled (Dis)United States: Roe V Wade overturn\, guns\, continuing fall-out from 6 January 2021 Capitol riot. ( N.B. It is proposed to make this the topic to get us started at the first meeting on Thursday 28 July)\nRussia’s ongoing military attack on Ukraine\nThe pervasive “Culture “ problem: bad behaviour in Parliament House\, football clubs\, corporations like Crown and Star Casinos \, banks etc. etc.\nCensus 2021: What has changed ?
