SUMMARY:Living Heritage Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The BMI has recently worked with Grimwade Conservation Services to perform urgently required conservation work on a number of significant items from the Heritage Victoria registered collection. This work was carried out as part of a  Victorian Government Living Heritage Grant awarded in 2021\, with work completed in December 2022. \nThese items include original volumes of Australian plant specimen books compiled by Baron Ferdinand von Mueller\, and associated books written by von Mueller\, an original artwork known to have belonged to the BMI from the early days of the Institute and various other valuable books needing cleaning and restoration work. \nThe primary exhibition will showcase these remarkable items within the Heritage listed building that is the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute. \nThe proposed accompanying events will include creative programming to showcase this work\, the wider BMI collection and the historic building and introduce or re-introduce the wider public to “their” Institute. Invitations will be extended to other special interest organisations to bring their members to learn why Ballarat was considered an important centre for learning and knowledge sharing\, even in the 19th century. \nCost/Entry Fee: Free to BMI members | $5 for non-members \n\nBook here\n \nView the full list of Ballarat Heritage Festival Events at the BMI \n\nBallarat Heritage Festival | BMI\n\n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n\nRosemary’s Book of the Week | 3 April 2023\n\nApartment 303 by Kelli Hawkins Rosemary’s Book of the Week… \n\n\n \n\nNewsletter – April 2023\n\nIn this issue learn about: Library New Releases & Recommended… \n\n\n \n\nOur Library | New Releases & Recommendations April 2023\n\nCGo to the Library webpage to view all New Releases… \n\n\n \n\nMeet the Author\, enjoy the Show | Bill ‘Swampy’ Marsh | 3 April 2023\n\nFeedback from recent Shows: Shaun Keenan – Griffith – Very… \n\n\nLoad More

SUMMARY:Meet the Author | Olivia Wearne & Elizabeth Coleman
DESCRIPTION:The Woman Who Knew Too Little by Olivia Wearne \nA Routine Infidelity by Elizabeth Coleman\nTHE similarities keep coming for two local authors who discovered they recently published their latest works a couple of days apart from each other. \nNow Elizabeth Coleman and Olivia Wearne have become fast friends following the release of their second novels. \nBoth crime fiction books\, Coleman’s is titled A Routine Infidelity and Wearne’s The Woman Who Knew Too Little. \n“I got an email from my agent saying there was another author in Ballarat whose story was very similar to mine and asked if I wanted to meet her\,” Coleman said. \n“We met for coffee and she said ‘my second book’s coming out’ and I said my second book’s coming out! \n“Her book has a female detective. My book has a female detective. It was uncanny\, so we thought we would join forces and get ourselves out there through these remarkable coincidences.” \nBoth screenwriters by trade\, Wearne moved to Ballarat and started writing professionally 15 years ago while Coleman has been crafting words for 30 years and relocated to the region in the last half-decade. \nColeman said the pair’s shared screenwriting influences is a prominent factor in both their styles. \n“Another similarity we share is that our screen experiences have really helped us with story structure\,” she said. \n“Both our stories kind of move along quickly because we’ve had to work to commercial breaks and things like that.” \nColeman said it’s important for Australian creatives to support each other. \n“It’s such a small industry here\, anything creative\,” she said.” We’re competing with enormous overseas giants. \n“It’s very important we all support each other and lift each other up.” \nSource: Ballarat Times : 8 March 2023 by Tim Bottams. \nhttps://timesnewsgroup.com.au/ballarat/print-editions/full-digital-edition-3-march-2/ \n\n\nMore about the author\n \n1948. An unidentified dead man is found on Somerton Beach\, Adelaide. Officer Kitty Wheeler yearns to work the case – but the city’s women police are typically assigned to more domestic matters. A wryly funny\, sharply observed novel about one of Australia’s great mysteries\, and the life choices available to mid-century women. \nDecember\, 1948. Officer Kitty Wheeler is a member of the Women Police\, responsible for ‘upholding the moral virtue’ of Adelaide’s at times unruly and amorous citizens. Patrolling Somerton beach one night\, Kitty and her partner spot a man leaning against the sea wall\, apparently drunk. It’s late\, they’re tired\, and they leave him to sleep it off … \nThe man is dead\, his identity unknown\, and Kitty has missed a career-making opportunity. In the following months\, the case of the Somerton Man grips first Adelaide\, then Australia\, as bizarre clues point towards international espionage\, Eastern mysticism or salacious scandal. Kitty\, preoccupied with the case\, joins the investigation wherever she can\, although the men are firmly in charge. Meanwhile\, she must decide whether she wants husband and family\, or a career – in 1940s Australia\, she can’t have both. Her boyfriend Peter wants to pop the question\, but Kitty is keener on solving the case … \nOlivia Wearne has threaded Kitty’s story into the real-life 1940s mystery of the Somerton Man. This intriguing\, sharply observed and wholly engaging novel explores the life and crimes of a city and its people\, few of whom are without their secrets. \nAbout the Author \nOlivia Wearne began her writing career as a screenwriter and has several film credits to her name. After receiving a Masters in creative writing she went on to write The Grand Tour\, which was published in 2020. Born and raised in Melbourne\, Olivia now resides in Ballarat\, Victoria\, with her filmmaker husband and two sons. \n\n\nMore about the author\n \nA delightfully sharp and clever murder mystery\, perfect for fans of Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club. \nSynopsis: \nPrivate investigator Edwina ‘Ted’ Bristol deals in the cheating husbands and missing chihuahuas of Melbourne\, but yearns for the heart-stopping excitement of real crime. When \nWhen Ted discovers her sister Bob has fallen prey to an internet catfishing scam\, she sets out with her beloved miniature schnauzer and shrewd sidekick\, Miss Marple\, to catch the swindler. Meanwhile\, when conducting routine surveillance on a couple suspected of having an affair\, she uncovers a plot to embezzle millions. \nAs Bob’s case takes a series of bizarre twists and turns and the embezzlement escalates into murder\, Ted finds her own life in peril. SUMMARY:Book Launch | Look Back on Languor: The memoir of a hurkle-durkle Australian male
DESCRIPTION:Dr Frank Hurley OAM is well-known and highly respected in the Ballarat community\, nowhere more so than in BMI circles has written a memoir titled Look Back on Languor: The memoir of a hurkle-durkle Australian male. The book will be launched at the BMI\, in the Humffray Room\, at 5.00 – 6.30 p.m. on Friday 14 April by The Hon. Steve Bracks\, AC. \n \nFrank reckons that the old Scots phrase “hurkle durkle”\,  meaning “to lie in bed\, or lounge\, long after it is time to get up”  sums him up well. \nFrank served on the BMI Committee for over 30 years till retiring in 2013. He was then BMI Patron for a further five years. He served numerous terms as President and as Secretary. He played a leading role in the restoration and revitalisation of the BMI in the ten or so years from 2000. \nIn other spheres\, Frank was deeply involved\, as a senior academic for 25 years\, in the evolution of the University of Ballarat (now Federation University) and in the establishment of the University’s Arts Academy city campus in the complex of former government buildings on Camp/Lydiard Streets. \nFrank lived some of his boyhood years in Howitt St\, Wendouree. He attended St. Columba’s Primary School and St Patrick’s College before moving to Melbourne in 1952. With his wife Helen and their four daughters\, he returned for a “second coming in Ballarat”\, as his memoir terms it\, in 1974. Over the 40 years since\, he has been a prominent participant in social\, political\, cultural and educational affairs as a media commentator\, writer\, speaker and member of a wide range of committees and organisations. \nWith insight\, candour and wit\, in this memoir Frank recounts and reflects on his experiences\, his beliefs\, values and the changing times of his life. \n \nThe book will be available for sale at the launch and after at the BMI library\, with 10% of all sales going to the BMI. \nThe launch event will follow the pattern of BMI talks. Light refreshments will be available and the bar will be open for purchase of drinks. SUMMARY:Book-making Workshop with Maggie Dannatt | 3 November 22
DESCRIPTION:Image: Courtesy Maggie Dannatt \nA workshop in Book-making.\nI made my first book as a teenager\, wanting to save all my favorite Don Martin cartoons from all the Mad magazines I had bought. I later learnt basic bookbinding at art school so that I could bind the books I was illustrating. I have made many sketch books since then and taught these skills to children and adults. \nI love creating art that taps into a sense of play and is easily accesible to everyone. \nIn these workshops we start by making decorated papers that we then paste and sew together to create a simple book. It is a variation on the concertina style. \nThe book will be a beautiful long lasting item to hold photos\, drawings\, writing or all of the above. \nFour part series\nThe series of workshops will be structured to suit each attendees standard. Young ladies would get together and spend their time creating paper beads out of beautifully elaborate wallpaper scraps. \nTo create their paper beads\, knitting needles were used and trimmed wallpaper scraps were wrapped around them to form the beads. The beads would then sealed and polished with bees wax. \nThese Victorian women were said to have created beaded curtains and room dividers with their paper beads. Today we can only imagine how beautiful these creations were. \nPaper bead making made a comeback in the 1920s and ‘30s when young women were making the beads smaller and using them in the creation of jewellery. \nThey also used knitting needles to create their paper beads\, but they used newsprint and other printed papers which created much smaller beads. These crafty women also started to use their perfumes on the finished beads\, creating scented paper beads. This was a time when perfumes were extremely expensive and hard to come by\, so this was a way they could wear their favourite scents every day. \nIn recent times \nCreating paper beads in the modern era is pretty much the same as in the Victorian era and early 2oth century\, except that a wider variety of papers are easily obtainable\, like rice paper\, construction paper\, and a lot more. The various types of paper we now use clearly adds character and texture to the final product. \nThere are now plenty of tools and resources to help in the creation of paper beads. Apart from endless paper products\, there are also many sophisticated hand rolling tools\, glues\, and sealers to take the final bead products to the next level. \nIn the Philippines\, paper beads are helping local communities generate income. This is also a way to resolve serious waste management problems. \nIn Uganda\, paper beads are made in co-operatives as part of development projects. Many women in Uganda make paper beads from recycled materials and can provide for their families by selling the beads and jewellery pieces that they make. \n  \nMore about Lilli Pilli Beads & Faye Heininger \n\n\n\n \nPurchase & confirmation \nTo attend these sessions the cost is $95 for the two sessions (price includes GST)\, discounts apply to BMI members and Concession holders. This workshop will have a limit of 8 attendees per session. \n\nBook 20 & 27 July\n\n\nBecome a BMI member\n \nOther payment options \nIf you do not wish to pay on-line please contact the Library on (03) 5331 3042 or email to reserve your place. \n  \nCommunity Art Project \nIf you have an idea for a Community Art Project then we would like to hear from you. \n\nCommunity Art Project\n \n\nThis workshop is a BMI Community Art Project – Ballarat’s Oldest Cultural Institution

SUMMARY:Painting with Geoff Roderick | 29 June 22 | Now fully booked
DESCRIPTION:Image: Seville Oranges (detail) | Geoff Roderick \nA workshop in painting basics.\nIn these sessions Geoff will be using water based artists quality Gouache (poster paint). Geoff sites five reasons for choosing this medium to teach. \n\nIt is opaque\, (unlike watercolour which is transparent) this means freedom of expression as it’s easy to cover any marks not needed or wish to change. The tube colours are mixed with each other and white to create shades and tones (as  in oil painting) these exercises could lead a student on to other mediums such as oils or acrylics.\nIt’s very quick drying. It is generally used on paper. It can be painted over immediately with other colours. It dries to a matt finish.\nIt can be applied in different thicknesses over and over each colour\, making it easier to learn and experiment with colours\, shapes and composition.\nBeing water based\, cleaning of brushes and any spills or drips on clothes will wash out easily.\nHe has had 40 years experience with this beautiful painting medium.\n\nWhat Geoff will supply \nFor initial classes he will supply: \n\nplastic palate\,\nbrush\,\nprepared paper A4 size\nand\, Primary colours and white Gouache paints.\nHe will also provide water glasses and rags for cleaning brushes.\n\nWhat you will learn \nWe propose to set up a simple still life for the students to learn the elements of painting ie. \n\nColour\nTone\nTemperature\nIntensity\nShape & Texture\n\nFour part series\nThe series of workshops will be structured to suit each attendees standard. SUMMARY:Joe Avati | 25 Live - Have Some Respect Tour
DESCRIPTION:The comedian touted as Australia’s answer to Seinfeld is back with a brand new show for 2022 – and with most of us needing a good laugh after the events of the last two years\, his tour will be just the ticket.\nAfter surviving the world’s longest lockdown in Melbourne\, Joe is bursting with new material\, has gone slightly stir crazy\, and will take his all new Live 25 show on a national tour to celebrate his quarter century of comedy. The new show is the pinnacle of his 25-year comedy career\, aptly titled Show Some Respect: 25 Live. \nFeaturing his unique brand of humour and sharp observations\, and over the course of almost 90 minutes\, Joe will honestly recount life as an ethnic Australian (or a wog kid as he prefers to call it)\, and now life as a husband and father to a newborn. Growing up in the 70s and 80s\, Joe’s view on how today’s generation of kids compares to his own experiences will have audiences of all ages and ethnicities in stitches.

It was her ‘soul place’ she said – a sanctuary she had been forced to leave when the Nazis swept to power. The trip was a chance to see the house one last time\, to remember it as it was. But the house had changed. \nTwenty years later Thomas returned to Berlin. The house now stood empty\, derelict\, and soon to be demolished. A concrete footpath cut through the garden\, marking where the Berlin Wall had stood for nearly three decades. Elsewhere were signs of what the house had once been – blue tiles showing behind wallpaper\, phographs fallen between floorboards\, flagstones covered in dirt. Evidence of five families who had made the house their home over a tumultuous century. \nThe House by the Lake is a groundbreaking work of history\, revealing the story of Germany through the inhabitants of one small wooden building: a nobleman farmer\, a prosperous Jewish family\, a renowned Nazi composer\, a widow and her children\, a Stasi informant. Moving from the late nineteenth century to the present day\, from the devastation of two world wars to the dividing and reuniting of a nation\, it is a story of domestic joy and contentment\, of terrible grief and tragedy\, and of a hatred handed down through the generations. Breathtaking in scope\, intimate in detail\, it is the long-awaited new history from the author of the bestselling Hanns and Rudolf. \nReview this title \nWhy not review this book for the benefit of our members. We will publish these reviews in our social media and website from time to time. \n \n My Book Review >\n \n\nThis event is a BMI Community Art Project – Ballarat’s Oldest Cultural Institution
