Annual General Meeting 2018
The Institute’s 159th Annual General Meeting was conducted in the Humffray Room on Wednesday, 27 June at 5.00pm, with President Phil Roberts in the Chair and with 37 attendees.
The meeting commenced with a lively and engaging address from Ms Prue Bentley, Chief of Staff at local ABC Radio Station Ballarat. She reported that across Australia, ABC regional radio had 56 regional offices, 400 staff (reporters, producers and presenters), reached 99% of the population and was intent on telling stories that mattered to regional communities.
Staff numbers have doubled in size over the past 2 years following increases in funding to regional radio. She commented on the changing role of the media in news coverage from newspapers and the 6.00 o’clock news to the internet and social media. She went on to say that news reporting includes in-depth reporting of local issues, more time on court reporting and investigative stories. Other priorities included feature writing and the production of engaging videos. The Chair thanked Ms Bentley for her address and presented her with a small gift.
Following the presentation of the Institute’s Annual Report for 2017/18 by the Chair and the Financial Report by Treasurer Grantley Hastings (both available on line), Patron Frank Hurley took the Chair to conduct the Appointment of Directors and the election of Office Bearers.
