President’s Report February 2018

The New Year

We look forward to the many activities at the BMI in this coming year. Through our new strategic partnership with
the City of Ballarat, we will have an increased exposure to City events such as White Night and the May Heritage
month. In November, a national conference – ‘Mechanics’ Institutes Australia 2018′ hosting international,
interstate and local delegates will be held at the BMI. Included will be an anniversary dinner to mark twenty years
of the Mechanics’ Institutes of Victoria (MIV) organization.

Executive Manager

Through our strategic partnership with the City, we are advertising a part-time Executive Manager position to
oversee the affairs of the BMI. Details about this position are supplied as a separate item below.

BMI Foundation

Following its launch last November, a number of generous donations to the Foundation have been made. The aim
is to build up a substantial fund that will ensure the long-term viability of the BMI. All donations, large and small,
are welcome. Foundation brochures are available at the Library counter.

Twilight Talks

Our Talks Coordinator Dr Joan Hunt has organized another exciting series of talks. Series One Talks commence
on Friday 16 February and will run for a six-week season until 23 March. The first talk on 16 February has a
garden theme and the next one on 23 February explores the importance of music in our lives. Details of all talks
appear later in this Newsletter. We welcome everyone to come to these Friday talks and make sure you mention
the details of them to your friends. Separate Twilight Talk Series One sheets are available at the Library counter.

Phil Roberts

BMI Executive Manager

In 2017, a strategic planning process was undertaken by the Board to determine how best it can manifest the aims
of the BMI for the benefit of its members and the community while conducting its affairs in a financially sustainable
manner. It was identified that the time had come for the Institute to employ a senior manager to assist the Board in
driving the outcomes of the process. Funding for this new position is being assisted by a Strategic Partnership
Grant from the City of Ballarat, details of which were publicised in the Ballarat Courier, late in 2017.

A selection committee has been appointed with shortlisting for interview to occur on Tuesday 20 February, with
interviews to be conducted on either the 1 or 2 March. Hopefully, an appointment can be made soon after.
Members are invited to examine the position’s Role Statement which can be accessed on the Institute’s webpage.
Please address any queries regarding the new position or the Strategic Partnership Grant to the BMI Secretary,
Ross Furness, on 0421 898 935. The position will be advertised in the Ballarat Courier on 3 and 10 March.
